After 2 years of employing head-held camcorders to explore and develop classroom interactional language in a variety of classroom activities, the author has begun the construction of a video archive, called the Database of English Learner Interaction (DELI). This practice-oriented paper provides a brief description of head-held camcorders and their introduction to and use with students. It also includes a selection of interactional language from the DELI used to create classroom activities focusing on pragmatic development which include: 1) understanding explanations in teacherstudent interaction, 2) using strategies in pair work during collaborative dialogues, and 3) focusing on greeting, small talk, and leave-taking in role plays. Abstract: This present study investigates classroom interaction with reference to gender and technology. The study data were gathered through partial ethnography by a non-participant observer; two sessions of the course Language Laboratory 1 were carefully observed, and notes were taken with a focus on the nature of interactions. Results of the study show that the interaction patterns are gender-related only to some extent. Also, the interaction pattern in the laboratory classes is similar to, but not the same as, the whole-class discussion patterns proposed in earlier literature. However, the main difference between the two is that the teacher‟s role in controlling and confirming the volunteer‟s contribution to the discussion is markedly visible. BringingClassroom Interaction Closer to Natural Conversation - Why and How? A Pedagogic Inquiry
After the heydays of Generative linguistics in the last decades of the twentieth century, its influence on applied linguistics in general and in second language acquisition research has been waning. In its place, the sociocultural aspects of language learning attract more research and theorizing, following the revival of interest in Lev Vygotsky. It is in this context, this paper argues for more space and time for natural conversation among learners and between learners and the teacher so that part of the ease, speed and perfection which are the hallmarks of first language acquisition can be brought to second language learning, as well. Research in conversation analysis (CA) highlights the role of natural conversation in building bondage among interlocutors who are not guided by any pre-specified agenda related to the topic, turn taking, hierarchy, or protocol which are the main features of usual classroom interaction. In the absence of pedagogic distancing by the teacher and self-alienation on the part of the teacher, natural conversation is likely to flourish in the second language classroom. Therefore, it has also been suggested that the efficacy of informal classroom conversation is likely to result in better classroom management on the part of the teacher since learners will be fully engrossed in learning activities promoted by theResearch studies have established a marked distinction between natural conversation and classroom interaction(Ellis, R. 2008). Following this line of thinking, this paper tries to inquire the possibilities of ‗elevating' at least part of classroom interaction into normal conversationso that learners may acquire the basics of real life communication. Though both the quality and quantity of exposure are crucial to learning a second language in formal classroom situations, it is the quality of the target language that gets the learner engaged in natural communication. If the variety of the spoken idiom possesses personal warmth, and if beginners are constantly exposed to this informal variety, they feel at home. Once we get the learner engaged in ‗languaging' activities (Swain, 2006), quantity of the input plays the crucial role in sustaining the learner's motivation and interest. This paper first tries to identify the nature of the language which dominates classroom environment, used for academic and class managementpurposes, then outlines the features of natural conversation, and finally proposes the need, and means of bringing classroom interaction closer to natural conversation so that young learners start learning language by usingor functioning in language.
Different Perspectives on Language Classroom Interaction

This chapter reviews several approaches which have been employed over the last 30 years to analyze L2 classroom interaction. Although the review is critical in some respects in order to prepare the ground for a CA perspective on institutional discourse, it nonetheless tries to uncover elements of compatibility between CA and the approaches reviewed and to integrate them wherever possible. The first approach reviewed is DA, which has been the basis for numerous coding schemes in language teaching. I then consider the perspective of the communicative approach on interaction in the language classroom. Next, I show that there has been strong recent research interest in developing dynamic and variable approaches to classroom interaction. This is followed by a discussion of issues relating to databases underlying such research and a specification of the database underlying this study. I then consider the relationship between CA and ethnography and conclude by introducing the CA perspective on institutional discourse on which this study is based. 2.1 Discourse Analysis Approaches According to Levinson (1983, p. 286) there are two major approaches to the study of naturally occurring interaction: DA Seedhouse * 58 Perspectives on Language Classroom Interaction 4 L: they cook their meal. 5 T: right, they cook their meal over an open fire.
Using Video Recorded Corpus to Analyze Classroom Interactions in Elementary School EFL Classes
This paper describes an interaction analysis study, which was carried out in a French Polynesian elementary school context. The corpus for the study was gathered via video recordings during an extensive educational project. This project aimed at collecting corpora on various school subjects from French Polynesian elementary schools between the years 2014-2017. The researchers used ATLAS.ti, a Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) to analyse the classroom interactions collected from six elementary school teachers' EFL classes. The study attempted: a) to discover common teaching strategies and techniques the teachers employed; b) to understand the effects the teachers' actions on the learners, and c) to determine whether the teachers' teaching methodologies were in concordance with today's foreign language teaching approaches. The study used both comprehensive and descriptive data analysis methods. The transcribed data were examined by focusing on both verbal and nonverbal classroom interventions. The codes were generated by studying both classroom exchanges and video recordings. The analysed data were presented using interpretations of individual instances, examples, paradigms, and frequencies.
