As product development is becoming more and more complex, needing the participation of a lot of actors with their various skills, the elaboration of an infrastructure for the Virtual Enterprise (VE) has appeared mandatory. This infrastructure must rest on new emerging technology for product modelling (e.g. STEP), remote access to information through distributed infrastructures (e.g. CORBA), and the WWW with all its de facto standards. This paper aims at investigating the integration of STEP, CORBA and Virtual Reality technology for the computer support of the future VE. The proposed approach relies on STEP information models, on a middleware supported by an Object Request Broker as introduced in the CORBA specification for distribution purpose, and WWW facility for shared 3D viewing services. The use of this infrastructure is illustrated through the distribution of STEP-based geometrical product instances in order to provide 3D viewing of objects previously designed under a CAD tool in a shadow simulation of an industrial building construction project sufficient enough to appreciate the benefits of technology like STEP, CORBA and the WWW in the deployment of concurrent engineering within future manufacturing processes. The use of virtual reality (VR) techniques in industry is subject to very high expectations, as VR has emerged as a popular technology for computer-human interfaces in order to master the shortcomings of CAD systems. 3D CAD models provide a natural way of sharing design information among participants in the production process. VRML is a tool specifically designed for creating 3D virtual worlds on the Web, where these synthetic worlds can give us the ability to visualise objects and navigate the virtual world. This paper describes a system for VRML model visualisation that enables changes in the configuration file, which is written in XML, and that automatically reviews the model including the functional behaviour. From the evaluated VRML model, the connection to a PDM system is provided with a list of elements and their material properties.
Applications for Virtual and Reality Modelling for Construction

Virtual and Reality modelling applications to the construction industry has not been examined to the necessary degree, with researchers disagreeing as to how to best apply these applications to construction. As most Building Information Models (BIM) are created for design purposes (Eadie et al, 2013), this research concentrates on the design office environment. This study concentrates on firstly seeking to clarify the best means of importing a (BIM) into virtual reality (VR) for viewing and secondly, analysing how 360-degree camera work can be linked to Autodesk Revit. Both these elements utilise plugins to import the elements to and from Autodesk Revit. Sixteen plugins in total were examined: 13 Virtual Reality Plugins (on 2 different Head Mounted Displays) and 3 360-degree camera work plugins. In this paper we report about a three-tier applied R&D approach for the Enhancement of Virtual Design and Construction methods at the Institute of 4D Technologies UAS, North¬¬western Switzerland (i4Ds). Present-day construction projects are characterized by short-term partnerships between multidisciplinary teams with varying levels of process maturity and information handling capability. They involve the planning, Architectural Design and erection of structures of all types. Compared with other industries, the construction sector has relatively poor profit margins and low efficiency levels. The product development process in construction is still structured as a sequential chain of activities in which each activity is separated in time and space and where Architectural Design information is communicated using traditional documents, such as 2D drawings and written specifications.
