The Korean-based Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) launched the Asian Network for Sustainable Organic Farming Technology (ANSOFT) consisting of eleven member countries. In the Philippines, the Bureau of Soils and Water Management is the principal investigator and the project is focused in Mindanao owing to great number of organic agriculture practitioners in the area. A similar network, the Mindanao Network on Sustainable Organic Farming Systems (MINSOFS) was organized for sharing of organic farming technologies. The paper discusses the participating networks of organic farmers and the major organic farming technologies they practiced.
This paper highlights the status of organic farming in the upland areas in the Philippines. Using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and biophysical characterization, results revealed that majority of the farmers are now moving from conventional agriculture to organic farming practices. The shift was attributed to farmers’ concern on health and food safety, cheaper inputs, and the preservation of their local agricultural practices. Similarly, the consumers appreciate the health and environmental contributions of organic farming, thus, the growing demand for organic food products. Despite these prospects, the adoption of organic agriculture is faced with challenges such as the lack of financial and technical capacity of the smallholder farmers; problem on the marketing and product labelling of organic food products; and, the quality of the organically produced agricultural products. These findings, therefore, suggest the need to review the institutional support syste...

This study aimed to assess lowland rice-based organic farming system in selected municipalities of Occidental Mindoro, Philippines. It was conducted in Magsaysay, San Jose and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines from June 2016 up to March 2017. This study employed descriptive method of research utilizing pre-constructed questionnaire administered to 133 farmer-respondents using an interview schedule. Key informant interviews, focus group discussion and observation were also utilized to gather data. Descriptive statistics, as well as costs and returns analysis were used to present the results. Results showed that lowland rice-based organic farmers are old, predominantly male and literate. The National Organic Agriculture Program aims to promote organic agriculture (OA) to enhance soil fertility in the Philippines. The success in the promotion of OA is partly dependent on the farmers’ organizations (FOs) practicing OA. Using semi-structured interviews, this study describes how five communitybased FOs in Quezon Province facilitate the promotion of OA. The systemstructural perspective and contingency theory, structural and contextual factors were used in analysing the interview data collected. Results showed that since the five FOs are community-based, they are able to address the problems in their respective communities. The successful facilitation of OA can be credited to the formal and centralized set up of the organization, which helped sustain farmer engagement. Moreover, the size of the organizations and the existence of institutional linkages greatly influence the conduct of promotion of OA-related activities. Activities of the organizations increased with bigger...

The Philippines's Department of Agrarian Reform seeks to determine the feasibility of the organically-grown rice-based farming and marketing project when implemented in Oriental Mindoro, The Philippines. Using the qualitative study approach, two irrigator's associations (IA) were assessed by holding key informant interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with IA officers and non-IA members or a community. IAs' needs were assessed by their: (a) organizational capacities, i.e., vision, mission, goal, structure, members' participation, fiscal resources, community network, and registration and (b) enterprise capacities, responsiveness of proposed common service facility to needs, and nature of professional services to be provided. Suitability of design was assessed by the: (a) quality and relevance of objectives and design; (b) potential sustainability and expansion; and (c) viability in terms of community participation, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Results of SWOT analyses indicate common findings among the associations and their community. Both have initial experience with small-scale organic farming and are in close proximity to potential high-end markets. However, characteristics distinct to each of the IAs are found. One IA has a perennial problem with its main water canal whereas the other has no other income stream aside from its limited membership fees. Given the results, the following recommendations were drawn: build the organizational capacity of the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organizations (ARBOs) through continuous leadership and governance trainings; assist them in adding a business development component/committee to their organizational structures; and provide them with brand new quality farm equipment that suits the local situation.
