Perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors towards the water supply system of Mexico City (original) (raw)

This study investigated perceived quality of the water supply system in Mexico City as well as customers’ willingness to pay more for the service. For this purpose a survey was conducted throughout the 16 delegations of Mexico City. A sample of 3 000 household was selected, through a stratified probabilistic polietapic design. The following are some of the main results: Although 96% of households have access to running water, and 82% is supplied with it daily, most interviewees believe that water is scarce. Even when they believe that piped water is one of the most important public services, and it is the service for which they pay the least, participants do not consider it to be the cheapest and they are adamant to pay a higher fee. Inequalities in service quality exist between socioeconomic sectors and between delegations. Finally, perceived quality covers different areas of the water supply system: supply condition, water quality, customer service, and leak repair.
