A Contrastive Study of Korean and Indonesian Derived Words Adnyana Putu Pramania Department of Korean Language and Literature The Graduate School of Ewha Womans University The purpose of this study is to define the similarities and differences of derived words in Korean and Indonesian language, which both morphologically share the characteristic of agglutinative language. Using contrastive analysis, this study examines the derivational affixes and derived words from the perspective of morphological, syntactic and semantic. Chapter 1 presents the aim and scope of the study, along with the review of related studies. The related studies examined three parts: research in Korean language, Indonesian language and comparative- contrastive research in both languages. Chapter 2 defines the concept of root, stem, base and affix, which assumed to be part of derived words. From this definition, this thesis sees that the composition of root and affix forms the derived words. While on affix, this thesis presents the differences between derivation and inflection before determining the standards of derivational affix. The list of affixes in both languages is also presented. In Chapter 3, this thesis closely examines Korean and Indonesian derived words and its morphologic similarities and differences. Derived words in both languages again classified into derivation by the prefix and suffix, and also by complex affixes in Indonesian language. It is found that both languages share the morphological similarities in the possible component to combine with affixes and the number of affixes allowed to be combined with the root. The fact that derived words is inseparable is also shown up in both languages. Meanwhile, the differences can be seen in the types and number of derivational affixes. This is related to the meaning and function of affixes in both languages. Besides, morphophonemics changes are also being the differences in derived words formation. Chapter 4 focused on derived words formation from the perspective of syntactic and semantic analysis. Syntactic perspective examines the syntactic constraint in derived words formation. X-bar theory is also applied in attempt to explain the internal structure of derived words. While for the semantic perspective, derived words formation is examined through its relation with blocking rules. Lastly, Chapter V presents the summary of this thesis.
