Evaluation of the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in selected districts of State of Madhya Pradesh, India: findings from a preliminary study

Introduction: Evaluating the needs of People Living with HIV / AIDS (PLHA) and providing them with adequate care and support is important in combating the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. Objectives: The study was conducted to ascertain the needs of PLHA, the support obtained and required, extent of involvement in programs related to HIV and evaluate the impact of Government programs as perceived by PLHA. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 150 PLHA in the districts of Indore, Neemuch and Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh (India) using semi-structured interview schedules. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 12.0. Results: The major support available to the patients is the free Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) available at Government health care centers. The other supports obtained from self help groups and NGOs were medicines for opportunistic infections, nutritional supplements, traveling allowance to ART center for monthly doses, free monthly ration and school fees for one child in the family. The major support required were an educational plan for children, free investigations at hospitals, decentralization of ART centers and adequate employment opportunities. Involvement of PLHA in health programs was minimal: the reasons for non-involvement being unwillingness, fear of disclosure and lack of opportunity. The respondents stated that Government policies have had a positive impact and changed the perception of the society towards HIV patients. Conclusion: PLHA have a number of unmet needs and a collaborative attempt from the government and support groups is needed to meet the needs of PLHA.

The Literature could not trace adequate evidences of emotional and family issues of PLHA as a result of Stigma and Discrimination as the Indian studies are focused more on fiscal, vulnerability and behavioural aspects. Hence it is important to understand and establish the effect of Stigma and Discrimination on the Quality of Life of PLHA. This mixed method research study with a sample size of 60, having 20 participants each across states, has used WHOQOL-BREF scale, Barbara Berger's HIV Stigma Scale along with in-depth interviews. The research study understanding the best practices in improving the Quality of Life proposes a 7-step Intervention Model which can be replicated across all Care Providing Societies of NACO.

Impact of Social Support on Quality of Life among AIDS Patients in Kashmir Province of Jammu and Kashmir, India

Since 1981, AIDS remains one of the alarming issues in public health. It kills more than 39 million people globally. In this silent killer disease, patients not only suffer physiologically and economically but psychologically too. Their psychological well-being, mental health and quality of life also affected. The cardinal objective behind the present research was to investigate the effect of social support on quality of life of AIDS patients. Further, the study strived to find the level of social support and quality of life among male and female; married and unmarried AIDS patients. This study consisted sample of 60 AIDS patients with equal number of male and female patients selected through purposive sampling technique. Quality of Life was measured by Quality of Life Scale and for assessment of Social Support among patients Enriched Social Support Inventory was applied. For statistical analysis Mean, t-Test, Pearson Correlation and One Way ANOVA was applied by using SPSS 16.0 version. The findings show that male and married AIDS patients have a better level of quality of life than female and unmarried AIDS patients; they also receive more social support than female and unmarried patients. The results also revealed that two demographical variables gender and marital status are negatively significant correlated with Social Support and Quality of Life. Concurrently Social Support was found positively significant correlated with quality of life. On the basis of the findings in the present study we may conclude that gender, marital status as well as Social support are influential variables in quality of life. All these three variables have their impact on quality of life.

Quality of Life of People Living with HIV and AIDS on Art from a Tertiary Hospital in North Kerala

Quality of life (QoL) refers to how well we live. Some people say the quality of life is about wealth and owning things, while others may define it in terms of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A cross-sectional study on the quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS attending ART-Clinic Calicut, a tertiary care unit in North Kerala where patients can check their CD4 count and get antiretroviral treatment free of cost. The study was conducted from over a period of 6 months with the help of two sets of questionnaires, part 1 to interview the subject on Socio-demography, Family details, Personal habits, Risk behavior, Disease-related details and part 2 for assessing quality of life by WHOQoL-HIV instrument. The sample size was calculated to be 310. The current study shows a good overall quality of life. The study shows a better score for the physical domain, psychological domain, independence domain, social relationship domain, and Environment domain but a lower score for spirituality/ religion/ personal belief domain. Social support given to PLHA was found to be an independent determinant that significantly improves Overall QoL and all its domains. The absence of HIV infection among children significantly improves all domains of QoL. The absence of opportunistic infection significantly improves all domains except the Physical domain which shows improvement but is not significant. All factors that improve Overall QoL were found to be improving all six domains of QoL.

Psychosocial Determinants of Health-Related Quality of Life of People Living with HIV/AIDS on Antiretroviral Therapy at Udupi District, Southern India

Life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) on antiretroviral therapy has appreciably increased. However, psychosocial challenges pose a great threat to their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The aim of this study was to determine psychosocial factors influencing health-related quality of life of PLHA on antiretroviral therapy. A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling to select 226 PLHA at District hospital. Demographic information was collected using a semistructured questionnaire. Psychosocial and mental health care needs of People Living with HIV and AIDS: A Review

Known Fact that HIV/AIDS is incurable disease and welcoming of several other opportunistic infections like cancer, tuberculosis etc. And it attach with several physical, psychological, social and financial problems, which creates vulnerability of people with HIV/AIDS. This paper elucidates the psychosocial and mental health care need of people living with HIV/AIDS. The literature included for paper is strongly supporting to the need of integration between psychosocial and mental health care and HIV/AIDS care.

Health Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS: From the Perspective of Policy Makers, Physicians and Consultants, and People Living with HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS has been concentrated among injecting drug users in the country. This study aimed to investigate and identify health and treatment needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in Iran. Abstract: HIV, as is well known, is not random in its spread and its impact is disproportionately high on those who are socially, sexually and economically vulnerable. The vulnerability is mostly in low socio economic families. The persons having HIV infection suffers various problems not only physical but also strikingly psychological and sociological. The present study was conducted on 'Psycho-Social Problems of HIV/AIDS patients and to assess gender difference among HIV/AIDS patients at ART centre of SMS hospital, Jaipur, India.
