A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PIN BASED AND THREE FACTOR BASED AUTHENTICATION TECHNIQUE FOR IMPROVED ATM SECURITY.pdf

Abstract - The rapid increase of technology used in financial institutions has greatly impacted on financial activities and electronic transactions. One of such technologies is the development of Automated Teller Machine (ATM). This technology requires secured, fast and accurate techniques for user identification and authentication which has been a problem. Financial institutions has registered loses because users are being unprotected of their assets and card information. The present ATM security authentication technique is dependent on pin-based verification. Factors such as urgency, memorization of pins, speed of interaction, unintentional pin sharing affects the system diversely. Cards with magnetic chips are easy to clone. This paper presents a comparative study of traditional Pin based authentication technique and a proposed three-factor based authentication technique. The three-factor authentication scheme proposed in this paper integrates biometric fingerprint, PIN and QR-Code technologies to provide improved security for ATM authentication. Key Words: Authentication, Card, Pin Authentication, Biometric Authentication, ATM, Embedded system, Electronic transaction.

IMPLEMENTATION OF MULTIFACTOR BASED AUTHENTICATION SCHEME FOR ENHANCED ATM SECURITY.pdf

ABSTRACT The main objective of this work is to develop an authentication scheme that will enhance ATM security using multifactor based authentication scheme, which combines Biometric Fingerprint, PIN and QR-Code authentication. In these system, Bankers will collect the customers finger print and mobile number while opening the accounts then customer only accesses ATM machine. The working of this ATM machine is when customer places finger on the finger print module when its access automatically generates every time different 4-digit code as a message to the mobile of the authorized customer through GSM modem connected to the microcontroller. The code received by the customer should be entered by pressing the keys on the screen. After entering it checks whether it is a valid one or not and allows the customer further access.

Auto Teller Machine (ATM) Fraud – Case Study of a Commercial Bank in Pakistan

International Journal of Business and Management, 2012

ATM occupies an important position in the e-Banking portfolio. It has given the consumers a quality of life allowing them to access cash and other financial information. Its role in promoting, developing and expanding the concept of 'Anytime Anywhere Anyplace" banking is undeniable. It offers a real convenience to those who are on the run in their everyday life, but at the same time, it also carries a big element of risk.

Securing ATM and Card Transactions using SMS-Based Security

ATM cards and systems have changed the lives of people. Now they have access to money all round the clock. This ease of access to money has brought forth a serious problem as well. There has been an increase in the amount of credit card frauds caused due to impersonating as the owner of the card in shops and also obtaining the PIN (Personal Identification Number) of the customer through some illegal means. The system proposed here ensures that only the authorized user can do any kind of banking transactions both in ATMs and in shops. The customers must initiate a transaction request from their mobile phones using the SMS (Short Message Service) feature that is present in all mobile phones. The customer sends a message to the bank server before he actually performs an actual banking transaction. After that he will approach either an ATM system or a shop that accepts card payments. The transaction request is sent to the bank server and hence authenticated.

Automated Teller Machine (ATM) services are more popular because of their flexibility and easiness for banking systems. People are widely using their ATM cards for immediate money transfer, cash withdrawal, shopping etc. On most modern ATMs, the ATM card used by the customer for each bank account which is a plastic ATM card with a magnetic stripe or a plastic smart card with a chip. However, password PIN which is the main authentication for ATM transactions represent the weakest link in the computer security chain. In the proposed Multi Account Embedded ATM card, we embed more than one bank account into a single ATM card so that the customer can carry out the financial transactions for multiple bank accounts. The user need not carry multiple ATM cards and remember multiple passwords. To provide high security we introduced fingerprint based customer authentication. It reduces the cost of interbanking transactions as interfacing different bank databases is a resource consuming thing.

Investigating ATM Frauds In Sunyani Municipality: Customer's Perspective

Customers in the banking industries in Ghana have seen a tremendous change in banking activities and deliveries, since the introduction of electronic banking systems. This research seeks to examine the knowledge of Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) card and its service users, educate the general public (Customers) on frauds associated with ATM and how to protect themselves against these fraud. The research also outline strategies and methods that customers and custodians of the ATM can adopt for prevention of some ATM frauds. Questionnaires and semi structure interviews were used as a methodology to collect data. A non-probability sampling technique was adopted by this research to provide a range of alternative techniques based on researchers' subjective judgment. We employed Microsoft Excel and SPSS for analysis and interpretation of the collected data. ATM users of selected banks in the Sunyani Municipality were defined as population of interest. A sample size of 500 ATM users from different banks were used as a case study. The findings showed that, only 57 out of 438 representing (17.76%) of respondents that uses ATM and it service have a little knowledge about frauds associated with ATM in the municipality.
