Blended Learning in Higher Education Challenges and Opportunities
2019
Online and blended instruction offers learners a unique opportunity to learn ubiquitously without being limited to the constraints of time and distance. Additionally, these pedagogies have the potential to open the doors of the university to a wider audience, provide choices for non-traditional students, and extend services to populations that would otherwise not be able to attend the classes on campus. However, complementing traditional teaching with blended learning techniques in a traditional university course presents various challenges. This chapter identify gaps in the factors affecting blended learning in the digital age. Based on the findings, the authors argue that instructors can rely on e-learning technologies to implement blended learning model by redesigning some lectures into new online learning activities, such as tutorials, self-testing exercises, and online group collaborations.
Building Effective Blended Learning Programs
The first generation of e-learning or Web-based learning programs focused on presenting physical classroom-based instructional content over the Internet. Furthermore, firstgeneration e-learning (digitally delivered learning) programs tended to be a repetition or compilation of online versions of classroom-based courses. The experience gained from the first-generation of e-learning, often riddled with long sequences of 'page-turner' content and pointand-click quizzes, is giving rise to the realization that a single mode of instructional delivery may not provide sufficient choices, engagement, social contact, relevance, and context needed to facilitate successful learning and performance.
Introduction to the Special Issue on Blended Learning
Online Learning, 2019
In April 2008, the University of Illinois-Chicago hosted the Fifth Sloan-C Workshop on Blended Learning and Higher Education. This workshop attracted 180 educational leaders, faculty members, instructional designers and researchers who discussed, shared and considered effective practices in the design and delivery of blended learning environments. Presentations on best practices, lessons learned, and research on the phenomenon of blended learning stoked the discussion for two days. The theme of the workshop, Blending with Purpose, attempted to focus the discussions on the importanceof designing blended learning courses and programs with specific educational goals and objectives in mind. The theme developed out of a growing concern that many faculty were using the latest technology simply for the sake of the using technology without carefully considering the pedagogical benefits and “purpose”. The organizing committee for the workshop also understood that blended learning was not just...
Blended Online Learning : Benefits , Challenges , and Misconceptions
2013
Blended online learning is an emerging variation of blended learning. Whereas blended learning enhances face-to-face classroom instruction by adding asynchronous online instruction via a learning management system, blended online learning adds synchronous online learning via web conferencing to enhance otherwise asynchronous online courses. Blended online learning can potentially attract seasoned faculty to online instruction because of the similarities of web conferencing to traditional face-to-face instruction. Adding synchronous sessions can also enhance learners’ sense of community in online courses. However, blended online learning can be criticized as undermining the “my time, my place” convenience that has drawn many learners to online instruction. It also requires appropriate software, training, and technical support. The challenge in developing blended online learning courses is to find a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities that leverage the technology af...
[PDF]A Blended Learning Experience
2012
Blended (hybrid) learning is one of the approaches that is utilized to help students for meaningful learning via information and communication technologies in educational settings. In this study, Computer II Course which is taught in faculties of education was planned and implemented in the form of a blended learning environment. The data were collected from freshman students of departments of mathematics and primary school education via a semi-structured survey which included open and closed-ended questions at the end of the implementation. The students were taking the course for the first time, and they were introduced with a blended learning environment for the first time with this course. The survey was conducted online and 67 students completed the survey voluntarily, and the data were subjected to content analysis. According to the results, implementing the course especially with electronic activities had positive effects on students from a learning and evaluation perspective. Students stated that the blended learning environment supported their active participation to the course activities and indicated that following the content of the course, homework and projects online was interesting and useful.
Current Research in Blended Learning
Handbook of Distance Education, 2019
This chapter synthesizes current research related to blended (hybrid) learning environments that combine online and face-to-face instruction. Research data highlights growth trends in blended learning implementation across higher education, K-12, and corporate training sectors. The development of models and theory to guide researchers is developing at a much slower pace. Current research is presented related to institutional issues (change and adoption, access to learning, cost effectiveness), student issues (learning effectiveness, engagement, satisfaction) and faculty issues (adoption, satisfaction and workload, professional development). The chapter ends with recommendations for future research related to blended learning environments.
The Blended Learning Initiative
Transcultural Blended Learning and Teaching in Postsecondary Education, 2013
This chapter describes a university-wide initiative to develop multiple courses in both online and blended formats. The chapter provides perspectives of the project from three vantage points-administration, assessment, and teaching-and focuses on the blended courses. The administrational aspects of the project, such as how courses were selected and how faculty members were recruited, are briefly described. The assessment, which includes data on faculty and students perceptions as well as student performance and course success, is described in detail. Finally, a case study of a particularly successful course provides a detailed view of best practices for teaching in a blended environment.
Blended Learning in Higher Education : An Overview *
2016
Blended learning is an innovative approach in creating motivating and meaningful learning experiences to fulfil learner's technological demands in the rapidly changing electronic era. Recognizing the emerging implementation of this learning method, this study explores the definitions, the rationale, past studies, the importance as well as the drawbacks, the issues arising and the suggestions in achieving a successful blended education implementation in higher education settings. From this study, we found that blended environment encourages the foundation of creating independent learners with reasonable critical thinking skills that are valuable for the current working environments. Blended learning is also a solution for classroom insufficiencies as well as teaching and learning flexibility. Nevertheless, not all the courses in higher education settings could apply the blended learning. Therefore, options should be given to the learners by the institution's administrator to ...

(NUGSE). All of the student participants in this course were invited to participate in a survey and an interview. The findings include an analysis of the pedagogical practices which promote educational leadership skills among students via blended learning courses as well as the challenges both faculty and students faced during this course. Finally, the paper makes recommendations for policy and practice in relation to enhancing effectiveness of blended learning courses in higher education. It may be of particular interest to schools in the early stages of implementing blended learning.
Through the beginning of the millennium, the education environments have witnessed the introduction of information technologies and new pedagogies. Especially, the extensive use of Internet technologies as well as the networked learning made it possible to design and utilize new generation learning environments that are realistic, authentic, and engaging. By means of educational developments, alternative content delivery techniques or technologies have been implemented into the teaching environments throughout the years. In an effort to capitalize on the advantages of instructional delivery modalities and minimize the disadvantages, scholars started to combine the most functional elements of the instruction in these learning environments and that is universally called as ‘Blended Learning’. Although the blended learning as an instruction model has an increasing interest in the field of higher education, it is still in its infancy. The definitions of blended learning in the literature needs to be clarified or collocated for the readers, who would like to deal with blended learning in any level of instruction. Therefore, this chapter reviews the recent literature on blended and online learning and juxtaposes the definitions of the blended learning as well as the types of blended learning instruction that took place in the higher education environments.
