Do e-business strategies matter? The antecedents and relationship with firm performance
Information Systems Frontiers, 2007
Previous studies in e-business strategy focus on the issues of strategic positioning and its impact on firm performance. However, these studies do not address the antecedents to business strategies formulation and their impact on business performance or the role of business models in explaining e-business firm performance. This study applies Porter’s generic strategies to the e-business context. It also identifies business models that are applied to the e-business environment and environmental factors and then examines these factors influence on firm performance with survey data. This study finds that uncertainty has a negative impact on the choice of strategic position of e-business firms, whereas market turbulence positively affects the level of adoption of all the strategies. Among the strategic positions, marketing differentiation positively influences firm performance. The research methodology, test results, and implications are further discussed.
Assessing Drivers of E-Business Value: Results of a Cross-Country Study
2003
This study seeks to better understand the facors that contribute to value creation of e-business. Grounded in the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework, we developed a research model for assessing the value of e-business at the firm level. Based on this framework, we formulated six hypotheses and identified six factors (technology integration, firm size, firm scope, financial resources, competition intensity, and regulatory environment) that may affect value creation of e-business. Survey data of 612 firms across 10 countries in the financial services industry were collected and used to test the theoretical model. To examine how e-business value is influenced by national environments, we compared two subsamples from developed and developing countries. Structural equation modeling demonstrated several key findings: (1) Within the TOE framework, technology integration emerges as the strongest factor for e-business value, while financial resources, firm scope, and regulatory environment also significantly contribute to e-business value. (2) Firm size is negatively related to e-business value, suggesting that structural inertia associated with large firms tends to retard ebusiness value. (3) Competitive pressure often drives firms to adopt e-business, but e-business value originates more from internal organizational resources (e.g., technological integration) than from external pressure. (4) Government regulation plays a much more important role in developing countries than in developed countries. These findings indicate the usefulness of the TOE framework and our research model for studying e-business value.

The article presents the findings of a survey of managers of Polish internet companies investigating links between e-business value creation and financial performance. The theoretical framework was developed by Amit and Zott that conceptualized the main sources of value in internet-enabled companies. The study included 150 businesses with the largest representation of internet retailers and service providers. The major outcome of the study was developing logistic regression model that allowed to establish which variables were statistically significant predictors of the operational return on sales ratio. It implied that out of the four elements comprising Amit and Zott’s framework only Complementarities were closely linked with improved financial performance. The other two elements – Lock-in and Novelty – were not viable predictors, while the forth component – Efficiency – was negatively related to the performance metric.
Analyzing the Success Drivers of e-Business Companies
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 2000
Although there is a growing amount of theoretical literature, only limited attention has been allocated to empirically determine the relative influence of a broad set of strategic success factors of e-business companies across several industries. We concentrate on the impact of marketing strategies and chosen business models and differentiate between direct and indirect drivers on revenue and profitability in order to estimate the total effect of a certain strategy or business model.
Strategic Management Journal VALUE CREATION IN E-BUSINESS
We explore the theoretical foundations of value creation in e-business by examining how 59 American and European e-businesses that have recently become publicly traded corporations create value. We observe that in e-business new value can be created by the ways in which transactions are enabled. Grounded in the rich data obtained from case study analyses and in the received theory in entrepreneurship and strategic management, we develop a model of the sources of value creation. The model suggests that the value creation potential of e-businesses hinges on four interdependent dimensions, namely: efficiency, complementarities, lock-in, and novelty. Our findings suggest that no single entrepreneurship or strategic management theory can fully explain the value creation potential of e-business. Rather, an integration of the received theoretical perspectives on value creation is needed. To enable such an integration, we offer the business model construct as a unit of analysis for future research on value creation in e-business. A business model depicts the design of transaction content, structure, and governance so as to create value through the exploitation of business opportunities. We propose that a firm's business model is an important locus of innovation and a crucial source of value creation for the firm and its suppliers, partners, and customers.

Sysko-Romańczuk, Value Creation in E-Business and Financial Performance: Researching Polish Online Companies with Amit and Zott’s Model, paper accepted to 4th EMAC Regional Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, September 25-27, 2013. The paper presents the outcomes of the survey of the managers of Polish internet companies with the aim of verifying to what extent the e-business value creation model developed by Amit and Zott could be used to explain different profitability levels among firms. The study included 150 businesses with the largest representation of internet retailers and service providers. The major outcome of the study was developing logistic regression model that allowed to establish which variables were statistically significant predictors of operational return on sales ratio. It implied that out of four elements comprising Amit and Zott’s model only Complementarities were closely linked with improved financial performance. The two other elements – Customer Lock-in and Novelty – were not viable predictors while the forth component (Efficiency for Customer) was negatively related to the performance metric."

This study investigates how e-business capabilities and digital marketing strategies jointly influence business performance in the e-commerce industry, which has experienced unprecedented growth driven by technological advancements and changing consumer behavior. E-business capabilities encompass the use of technology and digital infrastructure, while digital marketing strategies are employed to attract and retain online customers. The study examines the effect of e-business capabilities through digital marketing strategies on the customer satisfaction and loyalty of UAE e-commerce industry. The research is descriptive and explanatory, and uses a structured 5-scale Likert questionnaire to collect data from the HR managers of 135 e-commerce companies based in UAE. The statistical analysis is performed using structural equation modeling. The findings highlight the significant relationship of the study variables. Consequently, the results of this study provide valuable insights for e-commerce businesses, elucidating the need to invest in robust e-business capabilities to support effective digital marketing efforts. Additionally, the research underscores the significance of tailoring digital marketing strategies to align with specific business objectives and customer segments. The study also contributes to the literature on digital transformation, by demonstrating how e-business capabilities and digital marketing strategies can enable e-commerce firms to adapt and thrive in the dynamic and competitive digital environment.

This paper investigates the impact of adopting an e-business strategy on two organizational characteristics which have gradually become highly important for organizations in the last 20 years, information and communication technology (ICT) assets and business processes, and also on a 'traditional' one, the non-ICT (regular) assets, and finally through them on business performance. Its theoretical foundations are the Contingency Theory of Organizations in combination with the Cobb-Douglas Production Function. Advanced quantitative techniques of structural equation modelling (SEM) have been employed, which allow the estimation of complex multi-layer models including mediator variables that are both dependent (i.e. affected by others) and independent (i.e. affecting some others) at the same time, and enable the investigation of complex networks of relationships. Firm-level data collected through a survey of 271 Greek firms have been used for estimating a SEM connecting the above variables. The results show that the adoption of e-business strategy by Greek firms leads to adaptation of their business processes, which has a positive impact on their business performance, but not to additional investment to ICT or non-ICT assets. In particular, e-business drives Greek firms' processes adaptations aiming mainly to increase the non-hierarchical decentralized coordination within the firm, in order to cope with the higher task complexity and uncertainty that e-business gives rise
