Perceptual Learning Style Preferences of English Major Libyan University Students and their Correlations with Academic Achievement

Advances in Language and Literary studies , 2021

Exploring perceptual learning style preferences and their relationships with academic achievement is important to success in teaching and learning language. The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the perceptual learning style preferences of Libyan EFL University students majoring in English at Omar Almukhtar University and to check whether there is a significant relationship between students' perceptual learning style preferences and their academic achievement. A total of 75 fourth year English major students were participated in this study. A self-reporting learning style questionnaire developed by Kinsella (1994) was used to collect data and final semester examination scores were used to determine the average academic achievement for each participant. The findings showed that tactile style was the most dominant learning style among the students followed by auditory style while kinesthetic style was the least favoured learning style. The findings also revealed that there was a significant relationship between students' learning style preferences and their academic achievement; the strongest correlation (r=0.30, P<.01) was found between the auditory learning style and academic achievement. The findings are discussed in this study with implication for university instructors to identify their students' perceptual learning style and match them with their teaching style to influence students' achievement, and deliver their lectures by using different approaches and techniques to ensure that the learning process is effective and efficient for a great number of their students. This study contributed to the EFL field in Libya by providing clear information on students' learning style preferences and their correlation with academic achievement.

The total ca...

Paper title: The Effect of Visual, Auditory, and Kinaesthetic Learning Styles on Language Teaching

The ability to understand student learning styles can increase the educational experience. Teachers might adjust their teaching style so that it is more congruent with a given student's or class of students' learning style. One of the most important uses of learning styles is that it makes it easy for teachers to incorporate them into their teaching. There are different learning styles. Three of the most popular ones are visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic in which STUDENTS take in information. Some students are visual learners, while others are auditory or kinaesthetic learners. While students use all of their senses to take in information, they seem to have preferences in how they learn best. In order to help students learn, teachers need to teach as many of these preferences as possible. Teachers can incorporate these learning styles in their curriculum activities so that students are able to succeed in their classes. This study is an analysis of learning styles for Iranian EFL students. The purpose of this study is to increase faculty awareness and understanding of the effect of learning styles on the teaching process. A review of the literature along with analysis of the data will determine how learning styles affect the teaching process.

An exploration of relationship between perceptual learning styles and achievement goals

The present research is an effort to investigate the relationship between selected perceptual learning styles----the distinctive way of acquiring knowledge, and selected achievement goals---the purpose or reasons to accomplish a task. A sample of 100 students selected from government and private schools to identify their learning styles and achievement goal preferences. Results indicated positive correlation between chosen perceptual learning styles and achievement goals, it was also explored that English medium schools' students prefer tactile learning style and not engaged with mastery goals, whereas, on contrary, Urdu medium schools' student have mastery goal. As for as family system concerns, the analysis resulted that students belongs to joint family system prefer mastery goal and visual learning style, and gender based inference depicts females prefer performance goal and visual learning style. Government schools' instructors must involve the students in various tasks to accomplish and strive to teach them through representation of maps, charts or concise material whereas in English medium school pedagogical perspective should be approached to teach by playing with them or involvement in different games with them.

Kho, M.G.W. (2018). Analyzing students’ perceptual learning styles at a polytechnic in Malaysia. E-proceeding of the LSP-GABC 2018 International Conference.

This perceptual learning styles research looked into how students perceive and process information based on their preferred learning styles. This paper investigated the perceptual learning styles of students at a polytechnic in Malaysia. In this study, quantitative methods were employed to collect data. In addition, Reid's (1984) Perceptual Learning Styles Preferences Questionnaire (PLSPQ) was administered to a total of 163 respondents in the polytechnic (103 Commerce and 60 Engineering respondents). Based on the mean scores, the kinaesthetic learning style appeared to be the most preferred learning style, and followed by the group learning style. The least preferred learning style was the individual learning style. Meanwhile, the t-test displayed a significant difference for the learning styles adopted by the Commerce and Engineering students. The Commerce students favoured individual learning, in comparison to Engineering students. The implications of this paper suggest that educators need to pay attention to their students' perceptual learning styles in order to engage them in a more effective learning and teaching process, as well as to encourage student-oriented learning process to take place, especially in an ESL classroom.

An Investigation of Perceptual Learning Style Preferences of Students on The Basis of Gender and Academic Achievements

The aim of the present research was twofold. First aim was to identify the perceptual learning styles of the university students and secondly to identify the perceptual learning style preferences of the students on the basis of gender and academic achievements. Data were collected from 330 students of the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad by using stratified sampling technique. The study found that tactile (41.57) learning style is the most preferred learning style followed by the auditory (40.98) learning style. Both group (37.56) and individual (37.56) learning styles are identified as third most preferred learning styles. On the basis of gender, a significant difference was found in visual (0.043), group (0.027) and kinesthetic (0.019) learning style. With regard to CGPA of the students, a significant difference was found in visual (0.035), auditory (0.04), kinesthetic (0.029) and group (0.023) learning styles. Amalgamation of different perceptual learning styles such as tactile, visual and auditory may be more helpful for students to learn effectively and for teachers to teach efficiently instead of using only one perceptual learning style.

In order to help students learn, teachers need to teach as many of these preferences as possible. Teachers can incorporate these learning styles in their curriculum activities so that students are able to succeed in their classes. This study is an analysis of learning styles for Iranian EFL university students. Over 100 students completed a questionnaire to determine if their learning styles are auditory, visual or kinaesthetic. The finding showed that Iranian EFL university students preferred learning style was visual. The purpose of this study is to increase faculty awareness and understanding of the effect of learning styles on the teaching process. A review of the literature will determine how learning styles affect the teaching process.

Perceptual Learning Style and Learning Proficiency: A Test of the Hypothesis

Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006

Given the potential importance of using modality preference with instruction, the authors tested whether learning style preference correlated with memory performance in each of 3 sensory modalities: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In Study 1, participants completed objective measures of pictorial, auditory, and tactile learning and learning style self-assessments. The results indicate that objective test performance did not correlate with learning style preference. In Study 2, the authors examined in more detail the information participants used to answer the learning style self-assessment. The findings indicate that participants answered the inventory using general memories and beliefs rather than specific examples of learning in different modalities. These results challenge the hypothesis that individuals learn best with material presented in a particular sensory modality.

THE EFFECT OF PERCEPTUAL LEARNING STYLES ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS IN DEBRE MARKOS PREPARATORY AND HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOOL, ETHIOPIA

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there are significant relationships and gender differences among perceptual learning styles preferences, and academic achievement of students. The target population was 1884 in Debre Markos preparatory school in 2005. A sample size of 210 participants was selected using stratified and simple random sampling technique from the population based on the roster of record office. A self-report questionnaire was used to collect data on perceptual learning styles preferences while current semester examination scores were used to determine the average academic achievement for each participant. The instruments were administered after piloting to determine their suitability, validity and reliability. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient after piloting was 0.892. The questionnaire was revised to improve the reliability coefficient. The data collected from the sample size were analyzed by Pearson product movement correlation coefficient and independent sample t-test. The hypotheses were tested at a = 0.05.The findings indicated a significant positive relationship between students' perceptual learning styles preferences, and academic achievement. The findings also indicated that there were significant gender differences in perceptual learning styles preferences and academic achievement scores of students. It was recommended that providing welcome orientations, counseling services, short-term training and selecting classroom models are some of the solutions need to be given a due attention from teachers and school counselors.
