Process evaluation of an in-school anti-tobacco media campaign in Louisiana

In light of challenges imposed by the changing media landscape and decreasing classroom time available for health interventions, new approaches are needed to disseminate anti-tobacco messages to adolescents. This study reported process evaluation of an in-school three-year anti-tobacco media campaign conducted in 10 schools in Louisiana. Over three years, 10 schools received an in-school anti-tobacco media campaign. The media campaign was one intervention component of the Acadiana Coalition of Teens against Tobacco. Campaign measures were tracked over the campaign's three-year duration. The campaign and evaluation were designed to target the students as they progressed through high school. The number of students who completed the surveys were 1,823 in Year 1, 1,552 in Year 2, and 1,390 in Year 3. Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 430,000 deaths annually, or one in every five (US Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS], 1999a). Despite a reduction in smoking prevalence among adults in the US from 42.4% in 1965 to 24.7% in 1997 (DHHS, 1999b), cigarette smoking among adolescents increased significantly from 1991 to 1997 in each grade from 9-12 (DHHS, 1999a).

Media and Community Campaign Effects on Adult Tobacco Use in Texas

The present study reports on the effects on adult tobacco cessation of a comprehensive tobacco-use prevention and cessation program in the state of Texas. Differences in cessation rates across treatment conditions were measured by following a panel of 622 daily smokers, recruited from the original cross-sectional sample, from baseline to follow-up. The adult media campaign combined television, radio, newspaper and
