The Impact of Open Innovation in New Product Development Process
Recently, one of the most debated topics in management literature is open innovation. However, there are still many questions about open innovation that are not answered. Effective management of innovation requires openness in multiple senses, including openness to ambiguity, openness for new ideas, and an open policy regarding the origin and destination of ideas for commercialization. Studies show that, firms following open innovation recognize the value of external inputs into the process of new product development and seek to utilize these inputs internally. Additionally, it is important to investigate several types of new product successes as open innovation may have influenced the success in different ways. Therefore, this study focuses on the four distinct stages of the new product process for measuring factors of new product development success: Planning, Development, Marketing and Commercialization. It is found that organizational structural dimensions play important role in the success of NPD process in open innovation environment. Subsequently, a conceptual framework is proposed.
Exploring the field of open innovation

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to review the emerging research field of open innovation and identify where the field is going as well as suggest future fields of research. Design/methodology/approach -All academic papers and books published until November 2007 under the label of open innovation were systematically reviewed. Also, nine key researchers were asked to contribute with their opinions on the research frontier. Findings -A number of key themes in the research were identified, and conclusions on the underlying structure were drawn. This reveals that there is a tendency towards a broader definition and application of the term, a growing critical perspective, and a concentration on theory development and managerial implications.

A conceptual model has been developed to present comprehensively the processes and linkages of invention and open innovation for those knowledge workers who want to transform idea of a new product or service into a reality. The progression of idea conceptualization, realization and marketing is further divided into two phases; first is invention and second is open innovation. This paper examines the argument that open innovation is either a fad or a phenomenon. A massive amount of literature was reviewed on four open-innovation related themes - Drivers of open innovation, benefits gained by practising open innovation, the challenges limiting its widespread adoption, and real-life cases of open innovation approach. The findings reveal the following: First, motivation for openness includes the quest for increased ideas, limited complementary resources, and the perception of derived benefits. Second, open innovation enhances organisational performance in terms of the increased internal knowledge base, continuous availability of ideas for product development and commercialisation, and increased bottom-line profitability. Third, the numerous real-world example of firms that openly innovate indicates that open innovation is a phenomenon and not a fad.
