A field research was carried out during summer 2015 at the College Farm, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari on clayey soil having a pH 7.98 and poor in available nitrogen (230 kg/ha) medium in available phosphorus (38 kg/ha) and considerably rich in available potash (379 kg/ha). Ten treatments comprising of weed management practices were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications. Significantly higher grain yield and straw yield (kg/ha) were registered under weed free condition, which was statistically at par with atrazine @ 0.75 kg/ha + pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg/ha (6267 and 7921 kg/ha) as PE, alachlor @ 1.5 kg/ha + atrazine @ 0.5 kg/ha (5918 and 7316 kg/ha) as PE, atrazine @ 0.75 kg/ha + 2.4 D 0.5 @ kg/ha (5820 and 7276 kg/ha) as PE, atrazine @ 0.75 kg/ha (5680 and 6856 kg/ha) as PE and atrazine as PoE @ 1.5 kg/ha at 30 DAS (5619 and 6819 kg/ha), while weed control through sugarcane trash mulch @ 5 t ha and alachlor @ 1.5 kg/ha PE were also at par in case of straw yield. Dry weight of weeds at harvest significantly minimum (60.96 g per m 2) with highest WCE 82.97 %, and lowest weed index (3.36) were recorded under application of atrazine @ 0.75 kg/ha + pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg/ha PE, which was at par with T7 (68.53 g per m 2 , 80.75% and 9.28, respectively) and T9 (70.16 g per m 2 80.25% and10.18, respectively). The significantly highest dry weight of weeds and lowest WI (360.86 g/m2 and 45.53 respectively) was recorded under weedy check. Whereas, the lowest weed control efficiency (55.05%) was recorded under interculturaring at 30 and 45 DAS fbhand weeding. Among the weed control treatments highest net returns (₹92669/ha) was recorded in weed free check followed by tank mixture application of atrazine 0.75 kg/ha + pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg/ha PE (₹88979/ha) with B: C ratio (3.95) followed by alachlor @ 1.5 kg/ha + atrazine @ 0.5 kg/ha PE (₹83015/ha).

A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh during rainy seasons of 2015 and 2016 to find out the best chemical weed management practices in maize (Zea mays L.). Twelve treatments were tested in randomized block design with three replications. Treatments consisted of pre-emergence (PE) and post-emergence (PoE) herbicides applications along with weed free check and weedy check. Experimental results indicated that PoE of tank mix formulation of tembotrione 50 g/ha + atrazine 0.5 kg/ha at 15-20 days after seeding (DAS) has recorded highest weed control efficiency (93.6 and 96.9%, respectively during 2015 and 2016) followed by hand weeding twice at 20 and 40 DAS (90.1 and 95.6%, respectively). Grain yield was significantly higher (9.79 t/ha and 8.70 t/ha, respectively) with hand weeding twice at 20 and 40 DAS, and it was closely followed by PoE of tembotrione 50 g/ha + atrazine 0.5 kg/ha (9.65 t/ha and 8.61 t/ha respectively). Net monetary returns (1 04357 and ` 97985, respectively) and B:C ratio (2.94 and 3.14, respectively) were also significantly high with PoE application of tembotrione 50 g/ha + atrazine 0.5 kg/ha.

A field trial was conducted during the kharif season at Agricultural Research Farm of Trihut College of Agriculture (TCA) Dholi under the RPCAU Pusa, Samastipur (Bihar) to find out the efficiency of sole and sequential application of herbicides on weeds and productivity of the maize crop. A total of eleven treatments viz: weedy check, topramezone @ 25.2 g ha-1, tembotrione @ 120 g ha-1, atrazine @ 1 kg ha-1fb hand weeding at 25 DAS, atrazine @ 0.75kg ha-1 fb topramezone @ 25.2 g ha-1, atrazine 0.75 kg fb tembotrione 120 g ha-1, at razine 1.0 kg ha-1fb topramezone 25.2 g ha-1, at razine 1.0kg hafb tembotrione 120 g ha-1, topramezone 25.2 g ha-1+ at razine @ 0.75kg ha-1, tembotrione @ 120 g ha-1 + atrazine @ 0.75kg ha-1, weed free were tested in randomized block design with three replication. A total of twelve weed species comprised of four grasses, seven broad leaved weeds and one sedge were recorded in experiment field. The application of atrazine @ 1.0 kg ha-1 fb tembotrione @ 0.120 kg ha- significantly reduced the weed density of grass weeds, broad leaved weeds and total weeds and its dry weight compared to all other weed control treatments. This treatment had weed control efficiency (WCE)of 78 % and weed index 2.7%. Thereby, recorded higher yield attributes and grain yield (6.24 t ha-1), which was at par with weed free (6.42 tha-1). Therefore, it may be concluded that application of at razine @ 1.0 kg ha-1 fb tembotrione @ 0.120 kg ha-1as effective weed control practice for kharif maize.

Weeds are the major biotic constraints in maize crop due to its wider row spacing limiting its productivity. So, a field experiment was conducted during kharif and rabi seasons of 2015 and 2016, at RRS, Karnal, Haryana to study the effect of different weed control methods on weed flora, growth and yield of kharif planted maize, the residual effect of different herbicides applied in maize on succeeding wheat crop. Treatments included two pre-emergence (PRE) herbicides namely atrazine 750 or 1000 g/ha and alachlor 2000 g/ha along with three post-emergence herbicides (POST) atrazine 500 g/ha, 2,4-D 500 g/ha and tembotrione 120 or 140 g/ha +S (surfactant) at 35 days after sowing (DAS) were used. Hand weeding twice at 20 and 35 DAS, weedy check and weed free treatments were also included. Major weed species infesting the experimental field were Cyperus rotundus, Brachiaria reptans, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Amaranthus viridis, Digera arvensis, Phyllanthus niruri and Portulaca oleracea. Among herbicide treatments at 50 DAS, alachlor 2000 g/ha as PRE fb tembotrione 120 g/ha provided the highest weed control efficiency (95.1 %). Maximum grain yield (6505 and 6903 kg/ha) and yield attributes of maize were obtained in weed free treatment which was statistically at par with alachlor 2000 g/ha fb tembotrione 120 g/ha +S at 35 DAS (T 13) (6380 and 6816 kg/ha). No visual phyto-toxicity of any applied herbicide was observed on maize crop. All herbicide treatments employed in kharif maize, irrespective of their dose and application time did not show any residual carryover effect on succeeding wheat crop.
Weed Management in Maize with New Herbicides
Field experiment was carried out at Department of Millets, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during Kharif, 2015 in sandy clay loam soil to study the effect of different herbicides on growth and yield of maize. Based on the results, it is concluded that application of Pendimethalin (1kg ai/ha) as pre emergence fb Atrazine (0.75 kg ai /ha) + 2,4-D Amine (0.4 kg ai/ha) at 25 DAS as PoE recorded higher grain yield (6274 kg ha-1),net return (Rs.50,827 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.22) and it was followed by application of Atrazine @ 1.5 kg ai/ha as pre emergence fb Tembotrione @ 120 g ai/ha as PoE at 25 DAS, which recorded grain yield ,net return and B:C ratio of 6412 kg ha- 1,Rs.49,141 ha-1 and 2.08,respectively.

Field experiments were conducted in Kharif 2015 and 2016 at the research farm, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi to determine the effect of different pre- and post-emergence herbicide applications on weed dynamics in maize ( Zea mays L.). The investigation had a combination of eleven treatments using atrazine, pendimethalin, halosulfuron and tembotrione herbicides at different doses with different methods of application. One hand weeding (manual) treatment was kept as standard check and weedy check as control. Chemical weed control and weed free treatment recorded lower weed dry matter compared to weedy check. Highest leaf area was recorded in weed free treatment which was statistically at par with foliar application of halosulfuron @ 90 g/ha + tembotrione @ 120 g a.i./ha [30 days after sowing (DAS)] as tank mix] and pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i./ha (pre-em) + residue @ 2.5 t/ha but significantly higher than weedy check. Field studies were conducted during the rainy seasons of 2014 and 2015 at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Jhabua under the rainfed condition to determine the effect of new herbicides on weed dynamic, yield and nutrient uptake in maize (Zea mays L.). Results revealed that application of saflufenacil 68 g/l + diamethanamid-P 600 g/l EC (85 +750 g/ha) recorded the lowest weed density of sedges, grasses and broad leaf weeds in maize, and improved growth, yield attributes and yield of maize. The highest grain yield (3.37 t/ha), stover yield (4.17 t/ha) and biological yield (7.57 t/ha) was recorded with saflufenacil 68 g/l+diamethanamid-P 600 g/l EC (85 +750 g/ha). This treatment also recorded the higher NPK content (1.53, 0.24, 0.34% and 1.01, 0.13, 1.36%, respectively) and uptake (52.06, 8.13, 11.40 kg/ha and 42.08, 5.46, 56.66 kg/ha, respectively) by grain as well as stover. A field experiment was conducted at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur during Kharif season of 2021, to evaluate effect of different doses of Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was laid down in the Randomized block design with ten treatments which was replicated three times. At 45, 60 and 90 DAS among different herbicidal treatments maximum plant height was observed in Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC) @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1. Among the herbicidal treatments, highest cob length (15.67 cm), grain rows per cob (13.26), grains per row (26.93) and grains per cob (370.83) was observed in the treatment T4 (Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC) @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1) followed by treatment T3 (Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC) @ 0.875 kg a.i. ha-1). Data from experiment revealed that significantly highest grain yield was recorded in weed free plot (35.65 q ha-1). While among herbicidal treatments, application of Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1 (35.18) resulted in significantly higher grain yield followed by (T3) Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC @ 0.875 kg a.i. ha-1 (34.38 q ha-1). Among all the treatments all the parameters of crop growth and yield was highest in the weed free treatment (T9).
