The Florida Department of Corrections faces many challenges in becoming a modernized facility especially in the area of Community Corrections. To combat this the facility uses an organizational frame to determine more solutions to the problems that are occurring internally; at the same time continuing to work towards their current goals. To correctly asses the Community Corrections subdivision the model used in the assessment must show the correlation between the individual aspects that affect the department. The sources must be valid and reliable, so that there is no bias in the assessment allowing the assessment to show the areas that still need improved upon. Analysis of the Florida Department of Corrections including the effect corruption has on the facility as a whole with the following to be analyzed or answered: how do the structures and policies allow for the development of methods to improve organizational performance, what organizational assessment strategies are appropriate to acquire valid and reliable data for measuring the effectiveness of criminal justice organizations in meeting their established goals, how do the internal and external factors impact the effectiveness of organizational performance in the criminal justice organization, what recommendations are there to improve the performance of the organization in meeting their established goals, and what strategies should be used to communicate the recommendations to diverse audiences within the organization. PICJ, which started in 2005, has evolved from a newly established journal in criminal justice to an established peer-reviewed journal in the field. There are both good and bad points to becoming an established journal in a professional area. The most notable example is that the journal now receives more high quality, relevant articles than it can publish. The high quality of submissions allows the journal to be very selective in the articles published, but at the same time it means that not all publishable articles we receive appear in the journal.

Abstract Given the often disquieting history of correctional institutions, we question the notion of a utopian prison and, instead, make suggestions for simply improving existing institutions. First, prisons should adopt a clear commitment to the principles of restorative justice and rehabilitation. Second, the recruitment, training, and retention of staff should be reformed so that staff members are more likely to have a high commitment to such principles.
Criminal Justice Textbook Publishing: An Insider Offers Guidance
Background I started writing books in the criminal justice field almost 40 years ago. My early works were monographs on specialized topics, followed by edited volumes that were occasionally assembled with the help of coeditors. At one point, I even crafted an encyclopedia of crime and justice that made use of solicited contributions from hundreds of experts in the field (and which was published by Greenwood Publishing Group).

Implementing a Reentry Framework at a Correctional Facility: Challenges to the Culture

Implementation research is emerging in the field of corrections, but few studies have examined the complexities associated with implementing change among frontline workers embedded in specific organizational cultures. Using a mixed methods approach, the authors examine the challenges faced by correctional workers in a work release correctional facility during their transformation into a reentry center. Findings reveal that staff report a low readiness for change while observational and interview data confirm that staff attitudes and accompanying behaviors undermine efforts to provide a humane environment for reentry. This study illustrates the value of using quantitative and qualitative methods to understand and measure key organizational issues that affect the ability to alter the milieu for delivering services. The authors examine how inertia regarding reforms is not due to the nature of the reform but rather to the culture of the organization and how important it is to address organizational culture. They also highlight the importance of integrating interactional and routine practices among frontline workers as part of a strategy to reform correctional facilities.
