Researching effective continuing professional development in mathematics education

This paper presents some of the findings of the Researching Effective Continuing professional development in Mathematics Education (RECME) Project which was set up to investigate, amongst other things, the role of research in 'effective' CPD for teachers of mathematics. It is generally agreed that changed student behaviour and more particularly improved student learning is the ultimate goal of professional development for teachers of mathematics. The focus of this paper is on some of the findings of the RECME project in relation to student learning. The paper gives examples of the ways in which involvement in the professional development initiatives encouraged teachers to talk about student learning. The implications of these findings for designers of professional development opportunities for teachers are discussed.

Continuing professional development of a Mathematics teacher

This paper discusses the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of a mathematics teacher involved in a FAPESP research project that studies the potential of implementing teaching through interdisciplinary projects that have statistical education as an integrating axis. It seeks to answer these questions: what teacher learning was evidenced by the teacher in her narratives, and which perspective of Continuing Professional Development generated such learning? To answer those two questions, a narrative investigation is taken not only as a methodology but also as a way to construct reality since it is anchored as an ontology. The narrative favors evidence about the experience perceived and seen as an account, capturing the details and richness of human affairs’ meanings, based on evidence from the world and life. Mathematics Teachers’ Professional Development: Processes of Learning in and from Practice

Observable practices of mathematics teaching in the period of the year 2001-2003 also indicated that many teachers still have difficulty in elaborating the syllabus; a number of mathematics topics are considered to be difficult for teachers to teach; a significant number of children consider some mathematics topics as difficult to understand; teachers consider that they still need guidelines for conducting teaching process by using science process skills approach. Results of the initiated Lesson Studies significantly indicated that there are improvements of the practice of secondary mathematics teaching learning processes in term of teaching methodology, teacher competencies, students achievements, alternative evaluation, teaching learning resources and syllabus. However, in term of the longer term for teacher development program, the result of initiated Lesson Studies can be perceived as merely a starting point. There are still many things to be done in order that mathematics teachers develop their professional development.

This paper is an initial investigation into the practice of providers of professional development for teachers of mathematics. The study examines the work of two providers of professional development for teachers of mathematics. Both provided professional development while working with teachers on implementing a new mathematics curriculum for seventh grade. Although their work conditions were quite different from each other the study reveals that there were similar characteristics in their practices. The most salient ones were acting out lessons, analyzing principles of the new curriculum, encouraging the teachers to explicate their concerns, and asking teachers to solve concrete practical problems related to the reservations they have about specific components of the new curriculum. The role of a program that prepared the two participants to be providers of professional development for teachers is also discussed.

The purpose of this research was to investigate how teachers' Professional Development (PD) improves their expertise of Mathematics teachers. It used a qualitative case study and was based on the qualitative method. The study's population included two Mathematics Curriculum Advisors (CAs), six Mathematics teachers, and six principals, for a total of 14 participants. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to choose the participants. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, which was then analysed using theme analysis. The study followed ethical standards to protect the rights of participants. According to the findings, teachers can improve their understanding of Mathematics teaching by enrolling in studies at accredited institutions of Higher Education such as universities and teachers' training colleges, as well as attending workshops, subject meetings, and staff meetings. The study of mathematics teacher education and professional development has been a central focus of research over recent decades. Research activities have focused on topics such as reflection, collaboration and teachers’ professional growth. In particular, models and programmes of professional development, as well as their respective content, methods, and impacts have been described and analysed. Research has increasingly focused not only on the participating teachers, but also on the role of teacher educators and academic researchers.
