Estimation of the Brazilian Consumer Demand System

In this study we estimate the Brazilian consumer demand system through family expenditure data, which cover all consumption categories. The model is estimated from family-level expenditures on seven consumption categories, and a new set of regional cost-of-living indexes. The sources for expenditures are the national expenditure surveys conducted in 1986/87 and 1995/96, which collected data from 11 metropolitan areas. Corresponding price indexes were constructed from detailed commodity prices, also from each metropolitan area. The salient features of our study are: a) price variations come from both time and regional differences, which allows us to estimate price elasticities with high precision; b) we have large variations in income (total expenditures) which is rarely available in aggregated data; and c) we can control for time specific factors by exploiting the panel structure of the data set. Contrary to the rule of thumb in empirical studies of demand systems, the estimation results display consistency with demand theory, and elasticity estimates are close to economic common sense. The estimated system will serve as a microeconomic basis for evaluating various policy-related issues.
A Multi-Stage Almost Ideal Demand System: The Case of Beef Demand in Colombia

The main objective in this paper is to obtain reliable long-term and short-term elasticities estimates of the beef demand in Colombia using quarterly data since 1998 until 2007. However, complexity on the decision process of consumption should be taken into account, since expenditure on a particular good is sequential. In the case of beef demand in Colombia, a Multi-Stage process is proposed based on an Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS). The econometric novelty in this paper is to estimate simultaneously all the stages by the Generalized Method of Moments to obtain a joint covariance matrix of parameters estimates in order to use the Delta Method for calculating the standard deviation of the long-term elasticities estimates. Additionally, this approach allows us to get elasticities estimates in each stage, but also, total elasticities which incorporates interaction between stages. On the other hand, the short-term dynamic is handled by a simultaneous estimation of the Error Correction version of the model; therefore, Monte Carlo simulation exercises are performed to analyse the impact on beef demand because of shocks at different levels of the decision making process of consumers. The results indicate that, although the total expenditure elasticity estimate of demand for beef is 1.78 in the long-term and the expenditure elasticity estimate within the meat group is 1.07, the total short-term expenditure elasticity is merely 0.03. The smaller short-term reaction of consumers is also evidenced on price shocks; while the total own price elasticity of beef is -0.24 in the short-term, the total and within meat group long-term elasticities are -1.95 and -1.17, respectively.
This paper presents the methodology and estimation of food demand elasticities for Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia using household survey data. The paper reviews the theoretical and empirical approach behind the applied food demand estimation. The empirical approach consists in the estimation of a censored corrected LinQuad incomplete demand system using microdata from national household surveys. The empirical implementation and results are consistent with the state of the art in applied demand estimations using censored cross sectional data.

An Almost Ideal Demand System model is used to examine consumer behaviour in India using household survey data for the period 1973-74 through to 1993-94. The empirical results indicate that, for commodity groups, demand is inelastic, except for other foods and non-foods. The expenditure elasticity estimates indicate that milk and non-foods are luxury goods, while pulses, cereals, edible oil, meats, fruits and vegetables and other foods are necessities in the Indian diet. The results indicate that, for any increase in future expenditure, the largest percentage increase will be allocated to non-foods, followed by cereal, other foods, milk, fruits and vegetables, edible oil, pulses and meats, in that order. Estimates of future food supply and demand growth in India indicate that the gap between growth in domestic demand and domestic production is large, particularly for commodities such as pulses (deficit growing at 2.47% p.a.), but low for others like edible oils (0.02% p.a. deficit) ...
A demand system analysis of food for poor and non poor households. The case of Argentina
The purpose of this paper is to provide some microeconomics tools to discuss and evaluate public policies that imply transfers of income from the public sector to the poor and their impact on their food demand and calories and nutrient intakes. This study is concerned with the differences in subsistence expenditures, own-price elasticities and income elasticities for two households groups segmented by income: those people below the poverty guideline and those above it. The attention of our research is focused on a demand system for all food groups included in a National Consumption Survey and examines the household food consumption behavior by partitioning the sample. A complete system of demand equations, the Linear Expenditure System (LES), has been used due to its relative empirical expediency. The limited dependent variable problem is accounted for using the Shonkwiler and Yen two step estimation procedure.
Demand elasticities for food products in Brazil: a two-stage budgeting system

The object of this paper is to estimate demand elasticities for a basket of staple food important for providing the caloric needs of Brazilian households. These elasticities are useful in the measurement of the impact of structural reforms on poverty. A two-stage demand system was constructed, based on data from Household Expenditure Surveys (POF) produced by IBGE (The Brazilian Bureau of Statistics) in 1987/88, and in 1995/96. We have used panel data to estimate the model, and have calculated income, own-price, and cross-price elasticities for seven groups of goods and services and, in the second stage, for eight sub groups of staple food products. We estimated those elasticities for the whole sample of consumers, and for two income groups. This procedure allowed for the comparison of the results across the groups.
