Abstract

Fifty years ago, when the oceans' stocks of fish were thought to be inexhaustible, there were no so-called 'by-catches'. Marine scientists studying fisheries were mostly limited to the monitoring of landings, and they developed the methods used in fisheries science from this perspective. Discards and by-catches were not part of the equation.
