Ukrainian Migration to Europe: Policies, Practices and Perspectives

2014

This special issue is dedicated to migratory flows from one of the largest source countries for the European Union. According to Eurostat Ukrainian nationals represent the fifth-largest migrant group in the EU (after Turks, Moroccans, Chinese and Indians). Given the high numbers of Ukrainian nationals and the Ukrainian-born currently living in Europe, the dearth of academic books and monothematic issues of scientific journals focused on Ukrainian migration is striking. We hope that this special issue of CEEMR will partly compensate for the mentioned deficit.

Caught between East and West: Ukrainian migration in the 21st century

2018

With the long-established diaspora and high level of participation of its nationals in contemporary international migration flows, Ukraine is a fertile case study for examining the effects of globalisation on migration. Drawing on the existing research, the authors look at which Ukrainians have been more prone to engage in international labour migration since the 1990s, and under what conditions. The chapter highlights both structural conditions and individual motivations of Ukrainian migration abroad that account for why it has exhibited movements that are both east (i.e., to Russia and the CIS countries) and west oriented (to Europe and North America). The chapter reviews the effects of labour migration on Ukrainian society. It also examines the knowledge we have about the internal displacement of Ukrainian populations since the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 and the eruption of military action in the Donbas (the Donetsk and Luhansk regions), and the effects of these events on migratory movements within and outside Ukraine. Keywords: diaspora, networks, gendered migration, poverty, labour migration, post-Soviet.
