Female Characters' Role in Rise and Fall of Modern American Society: A Case Study of John Steinbeck's Masterpieces

The reasons of the study are to explore the situations in which women characters exercise power in relationship with men and to investigate in most of Steinbeck's work that the women characters carry dominant and active roles, which they gain empowerment in the selected novels. Although feminists are interested in criticizing the subordination of women, many works concerning women empowerment are also found in the canon. Thus, efforts to look at Steinbeck's works in relation to his women characters and power should also be given importance.

This paper aims to examine the portrayal of Elisa and Mary in accordance to their role as modern society woman as it is portrayed in the story. We read closely about the story’s focus which is upon Elisa and her garden, Elisa and her husband; Mary and her garden, Mary and her husband, and lastly Elisa and Mary and their surroundings. This study is significant because it provides ways to analyze power from an angle that empowers women. Although. Steinbeck had presented his women characters as sophisticated modern women who are liberated and powerful in leading their lives, the reality in the world still maintains that women are at the secondary position in comparison to men. By altering the presentation of women in literature, the researcher delivers the importance of power in women's lives as it enables women empower their own lives to a certain extent if not entirely. Hence, the researcher discovers that the knowledge of power is as important as the power of knowledge in women's lives.

stories collected in The Long Valley. These stories share common themes and character`s type such as Elisa Allen, Mary Teller, and Emma. Those women are outwardly depicted as dependant women but inwardly independent to their own visions of their lives. The purpose of this paper is to analyze those female identities, to elucidate how they are similar and different in those three short stories. The method used was descriptive method. The result shows that Elisa, Mary, and Emma are accepting their roles as housewives in a vain, sterile way. The three females make their husband sexual desires quite unsatisfied. We can also say that the three females are very different in ways they pursue their own ideals. Elisa is portrayed as the least independent one as she fails to realize and accomplish her natural, feminine desires. Thus, Mary is portrayed as the stronger female; she is able to manipulate her husband and her garden to be kept and corrected according to her own narcissistic, feminine identity. Finally, Emma appears to be the strongest, the most independent among the three.

This research presents a stylistic analysis of a short story entitled The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck. At the grammatical level, transitivity is employed to achieve the objective of this research. This research is conducted to observe the transitivity process in the short story. By using the transitivity process, this research reveals the portrayal of the main female character. This research applies a qualitative method based on the type of data collected in this research. Based on the findings, there are six types of transitivity processes found, they are material, mental, relational, verbal, existential, and behavioural. Feminism as seen in juana, the secondary character of john steinbeck’s the pearl

This study is intended to find out feminism in Juana, the secondary character of Steinbeck’s “The Pearl”. There are two problems that became the basis questions: (1) how is Juana characterized? (2) how is feminism revealed in Juana? To obtain the answers to the two questions above, a library study was carried out. It is done by studying the information and sources which were picked from referential books and studies of Steinbeck’s work. Sociocultural approach is applied to analyze the story, since the problems have close relationship with people and their ideas of feminism.
