This article analyses the 109 Surah of Qur’an (Q 109) from linguistic and religious studies points of view. The Surah «al-Kāfirūn», despite its rather short length, serves as a quite useful source for contextual analysis of the time of its formation. More-over, this passage could potentially shed some light on inter- textual connections in the whole Qur’an. Unfortunately, this Surah has never been a central focus of academic at-tention. Using communicative methods of word-by-word translations, the research re-veals the complex nature of relationships between early Islamic community and other religious groups – Jews and Christians. Considering Q 109 in its historical context, the article demonstrates how Muslims, being a minority group at that time, attempted to nego-tiate its own existence with other religious groups. The article analyses two suras of the Qur'an (Q. 105 and Q. 106) within the scope of the hypothesis that they initially constituted a textual unity. This assumption was presented by some reports of early Muslim traditions. Several modern researchers also mentioned the thematic coherence of these two suras. Structural analysis of the rhyming endings in both suras and distribution of their thematic units give new insights about supposed previous initial composition of the text. Rhetorical side of the revelation was also analysed according to the concept of emotional plots. These new arguments reinforce the idea that Q. 105 and Q. 106 were revealed as one distinctive piece of the Qur'anic text.
Literary and Structural Analysis of Q 92 (al-Layl)

An analysis of Q 92 will be the main focus of this essay. The reason of examining Q 92 here is that it seems to be a perfect representation of the tripartite macrostructure of a single surah. 1 Interestingly, Q 92 consists of a structural template forming vv. 5-7 and vv. 8-10 that presumably appeared to be initial reference for some later surahs. Furthermore, the mutual reference of several words within the surah seems indicating the surah's unity. Lastly, consistency of rhyme and mean verse length throughout the surah become an ascertainable literary feature that it has.

A Rhetorical Study of Selected Verses in the Glorious Quran
This paper is a rhetorical study of some selected Quranic texts. It is an attempt to shed light on some of the rhetorical devices. It also aims to reveal the expressional and imaginative function of various rhetorical aspects that are basic in the structure of religious texts. The study hypothesizes that in such texts, the meanings are plain and disposed to affect the minds and hearts of listeners/ readers together due to the rhetorical style such language has. It starts with a brief idea about Rhetoric; its relationship with pragmatics. The paper also deals with figures of speech and Tropes, especially those used in religious texts. The paper ends with an analysis of some selected Quranic verses taken as representatives.
Self-referentiality in the Qur’anic Text: “Binarity” as a Rhetorical Tool (full text)

Self-referential discourse, i.e. the discourse of the Qurʾān about itself, is omnipresent in the Qur’anic text. Interestingly, it uses several strategies of argumentation and several rhetorical tools in order to persuade the listener or the reader to adhere to a specific understanding of what the Qurʾān is: an understanding leading to faith. Based on an extensive study of the self-referential discourse in the Qurʾān, this paper focuses on the importance of one of the rhetorical tools: “binarity.” This notion goes beyond the simple notion of “pairs” and is characterized by a clear-cut opposition ongoing in the whole text between elements of all kinds of domains and mainly in relation to biblical material. Contrary to what it may seem at first glance, “binarity” in the Qurʾān is far from being related to a dualist religious system. On the contrary, a close analysis shows that the use of “binarity” in the text emphasizes the exceptional character of the Qurʾān in relation to its divine origin. The function of “binarity” appears in all its rhetorical strength in the impression conveyed upon the listener or reader. Following the path of the works of contemporary scholars who used literary, structural, and argumentative analysis, this paper also aims at convincing the reader of the fruitfulness of rhetorical studies of the Qurʾān.
The Trilogy of Linguistic Communication of the Qur’an Surah Al-Kâfirûn

In Indonesia, the word "al-kâfir" which comes from the Arabic word "al-kâfir" )الكافر( as in the Qur'an surah al-Kâfirûn is often used to offend non-Muslim groups. This study aims to reveal the essence of the meaning of linguistic features in the form of the main word "al-kâfir" and sentence in the first verse of surah al-Kâfirûn, which is still ambiguous, as the word "kâfir" is often only interpreted to non-Muslim people. This study used Jakobson's "interlingual" linguistic translation theory with the "mutual translatability" analysis method. These methods reveal aspects of the equivalent of words and sentences from the source language of the Qur'an to the target language (Indonesian). This study found that the word al-kafir in the first verse of al-Kâfirûn's does not only mean to people who are not Muslim but contains meaning to all individuals who are blind to the truth of the Qur'an. Allah taught the linguistics of the Qur'an through Muhammad to all individuals. Thus Allah teaches the meaning of effective and persuasive communication through the linguistic communication trilogy of surah al-Kâfirûn. As an implication, this finding is expected to reduce the gap in understanding the word "al-Kâfirûn," which sometimes triggers social conflict.
The Linguistic and Semantic Coherence of Surah Al-Fatihah

The aim of this research is to highlight some aspects of the miraculous of Surah Al-Fatihah, clarify the purposes (Maqasid) and objectives of the Surah, show the intended meaning through linguistic and semantic coherence, and illustrate its impact on contemplating the Quran. The problem of the research lies in the fact that Surah Al-Fatihah is a short surah with many meanings, and it has collected all the purposes of the Quran. It also demonstrates linguistic and semantic coherence; thus the researcher seeks to uncover and analyse these aspects. The research adopts a descriptive and semantic analysis approach where the existing phenomenon is described and analysed and its meanings are extracted. The research findings reveal that Al-Fatihah contains a great linguistic miracle where verbs and sentences are proportional and coherent. Additionally, analysis of the verses shows that they contain the two most important aspects emphasized by Islam, which are knowledge and deeds (beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds). Moreover, the research found that Surah Al-Fatihah has three parts: a section with nominal sentences to describe Allah's attributes, a section with verbal sentences to express the actions of worshipers, and a mixed section that contains both nominal and verbal sentences with the latter starting with the subject followed by its object. The researchers recommend further studies on the linguistic and semantic coherence in other chapters of Al-Quran to explore more miracles of Al-Quran.
