Asian Social Science, 2015

In this study, we investigated the role of small-scale dairy farming and related factors in promoting empowerment among women in the Salakandi (V1) and Binpara (V2) villages in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Data were collected from 50 rural women involved in dairy farming practices in each village through direct interviews using questionnaires. A combination of criteria was modeled using Multiple Linear Regression, revealing that, for all criteria, women from V1 exhibited greater empowerment than women from V2. Through small-scale dairy farming, rural women from V1 were able to increase their confidence and decision-making power with regard to their household and personal care and experienced increased self-esteem, expansion of their social circles, and ultimately enhanced empowerment through the breakdown of traditional socio-cultural norms. Sustainability, Agri, Food and Environment Research, 2023

Woman has always been the strength of agriculture and other related activities such as dairy farming, animal husbandry, fisheries, etc. but her control over agriculture resources, livestock and its products is minimal. A survey study was conducted to find out the participation and decision making of women in dairy farming in Chomu Tehsil of Jaipur district of Rajasthan. 100 farm women were selected from a total of 200 families, which owned more than five milk producing animals, by simple random sampling. Data were collected through personal interview technique where a structured interview schedule was used. Dairy farming activities were divided in three categories: Animal care, Management of Animals, and Processing and Marketing of Milk Products. Majority of the women (45%), involved in dairy farming were in the age group of 25-35 years, and most of them (87%) were from OBC category. 67 percent of the women lived in joint families and 40% women had medium land holding. Women's participation was mainly (73%) in daily animal care activities such as feeding & watering, storage of feed and fodder, taking animals for grazing, cleaning the animal sheds and milking. They were also doing some management related activities like maintaining farm and dairy records (76%), but participation and involvement in decision making was found very low in processing and marketing of dairy farm product especially in products, which required greater technical skills and are to be sold in the outside market i.e. Paneer, Rasgulla and Gulabjamun. Dairy products like Ghee and Mawa which need less technical skill and can be sold locally; women were actively involved in processing and marketing. Women of younger age had significant role in decision making regarding animal care and management related activities but their participation and domination was also less in activities of economic nature. Potentials of Private Dairy Cooperative in Promoting Women Empowerment Through Improvising an Organizational Approach in Rural Areas of Bangladesh: A Study on Kazi Shahid Foundation

Plan plus, 2022

Although Bangladesh has changed a lot due to economic development, most of the people of Bangladesh still live in villages. And, the rural economy of Bangladesh is still dependent on agriculture. Beside farming and agricultural activities, a large portion of the rural population is involved with dairy production. Our rural women are largely engaged in agriculture as well as with dairy farming but often their contribution is unrecognized. On the other hand, due to the traditional rural society of Bangladesh being highly dominated by men, rural women are still lagging behind from earning income and getting economically empowered. Thus, many non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local, national and international level donor agencies are aiming to change the lives of these rural women of Bangladesh. One of the popular approaches practiced by different organizations to empower the rural poor women is through lending them cash money. However, there are some other non-profit organizations as well who provide other means like assets and services (for example, dairy cooperatives) to empower women rather than providing cash money. This paper tries to explore whether the initiatives of a private dairy cooperative offers an organizational approach for promoting women empowerment in rural areas of Bangladesh. From the literature, four interconnected factors have been identified as the operational indicators or the dimensions of women's empowerment to understand the impacts of a private dairy cooperative on its women beneficiaries. This research used multiple methods (in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, survey) to explore the contact points and interactions of different dimensions of women's empowerment through studying a private dairy cooperative (Kazi Shahid Foundation). The research findings support that the private dairy cooperative could make a positive impact in enhancing the economic, physical and social assets of women, as well as developing their mobility and leadership qualities. The beneficiaries of the project showed highest participation in economic activities followed by access to savings, purchasing and marketing activities as well as decision making capacity while achievements in other areas of empowerment were also quite decent. Importantly, the private dairy cooperative played the key role in empowering rural women in the study area. This research finding asserts that more planned projects and dynamic principles of staff and officials of a private dairy cooperative are needed for empowering rural women as well as to achieve sustainable development and eradicate the overall economic adversities in the rural areas of Bangladesh.
