The Use of Text Aloud Software in Teaching Students' Pronunciation

Pronunciation is often viewed as difficult English sub-skill for EFL students in Indonesia. Many of students did not know how to respond the problem of pronunciation they have in class. Moreover, many teachers or lecturers also did not support the students’ pronunciation teaching and learning with a proper media. This situation happened in second semester students of English Department, FKIP UHAMKA Jakarta 2018/2019 Academic Year. IMPROVING STUDENTS’ PRONUNCIATION USING AUDIO VISUAL AIDS (AVAs) AT THE FIFTH YEAR OF AL-AZHAR SYIFA BUDI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OF SURAKARTA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2007/2008 (A CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH)

The study aims to describe the implementation, result, and students’ responses to the implementation of teaching English pronunciation using Audio Visual Aids (AVAs). This descriptive qualitative study requires four procedures: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The object of the study is the fifth year consisting of 19 students of Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Elementary School of Surakarta. The methods of data collection are pre-test and post-test, interview, questionnaires, and observation. The findings show that the mean score of students’ pre-test is 7.5 and the mean score of students’ post-test is 9.4. The result of the pre-test and posttest indicates that there is an improvement in students’ pronunciation, especially in pronouncing word-stress. TEACHING PRONUNCIATION USING APPLICATION

This study aims to represent the function of an Application for teaching and learning pronunciation. For specific material, it will be discussed about speaking and sub unit of speaking; pronunciation including consonant, vowel, and dhipthong that suits to the Application. In pronunciation teaching, it is important to notice that every students has different learning style that will be influenced to the improvement of their pronunciation ability. That is the reason why audiovisual media such as the Application is needed. Furthermore, the teacher and learner will be able to get information easier through the Application by using material and teaching procedure that is suitable. Pronunciation is not only about pronounce the word, but it is also about differentiate of each sounds in a word. Therefore, this study gives new information about the media in teaching pronunciation. The purpose of this study is to prove that Application has a role in teaching pronunciation, not only book or audio as usual.

This paper presents students' perceptions towards multimedia elements in Sounds and Pronounce Interactive Software (SPISE) for English. SPISE is an interactive multimedia software, which attempts to introduce learners to the English phonetic system. It is a learning aid that teaches learners the correct pronunciation of English words. The collection of data for this research paper involved the administration of questionnaires to 74 students of SK TASUDA (Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud), Kuching, Sarawak, comprising Primary 5 and 6 students. Prior to the distribution of questionnaires, the participants were guided on how to use SPISE, and they experienced learning the English phonetics using the software. From the findings, high responses were obtained for the software's interface, text, graphic, audio, interactivity and effectiveness (above 3.80). In addition, as SPISE promotes self-directed learning by providing immediate feedback, the students found the learning fun and interactive. Hence, it could be concluded that SPISE is a useful, fun and interactive software for a teaching and learning aid, which could help learners master their English phonetics.

Students’ Perception Towards the Use of Joox Application to Improve Students’ Pronunciation

Student in Indonesia has many regional accents. It influences them when they are pronouncing English words. Most of them thought that pronunciation is quite-hard. However, with the use of application media could help students in the learning process. One of the applications that can be used as a medium to improve the student pronunciation is JOOX. In this paper, the researcher will investigate student’s perception towards the use of JOOX Application to improve their pronunciation. Furthermore, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative as a method of the study. The participants of the study are 20 students of English Education batch 17 at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data by tabulating data. The result revealed that most of the students (74%) are agreed that JOOX application help them to get better pronunciation with the help of lyrics features in JOOX application.

An Application of Powtoon as a Digital Medium: Enhancing Students’ Pronunciation in Speaking

This research is focused on the use of Powtoon as a digital medium to improve the students' pronunciation in speaking class. The researcher applies a classroom action research which consists of two cycles with three meetings in every cycle. Collections of quantitative and qualitative data are gained from test, observation, questionnaire, interview, and diary. The quantitative data obtained from the test are analyzed in order to find out the mean score. Furthernore, the qualitative data are analyzed by: assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The result of the research shows that Powtoon as a digital medium could improve: 1) the students' pronunciation in speaking class; and 2) the students' learning motivation. Hence, the findings reveal that improving the students' pronunciation in speaking using Powtoon was successful viewed from some dimensions. The implementation of using Powtoon improved the teaching and learning process in speaking. The motivation, attention, interest and participation of the students improved. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to use Powtoon in teaching speaking especially when they want to improve students' pronunciation and to improve students' motivation in the speaking class.

THE APPLICATION OF WEB-BASED LEARNING MEDIA IN PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE THROUGH SONGS AND GAMES.

Pronunciation practice is an important aspect of speaking and listening skill in the higher education. Verbal learning such as English pronunciation practice requires the availability of effective learning media. The absence of the learning media may lead to frequent inaccuracy in speaking, spelling, and repetition. Therefore, the idea to use songs and games in the class is very important to increase the effectivity of learning pronunciation. Songs and games will help verbal English lesson more meaningful and induce learning activities to be more fun. The research purposes are to describe and to develop the application of web-based learning media in Pronunciation Practice through songs and games, in English Education Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Indraprasta PGRI University. This research belongs to Research and Development: requires an analysis, develops syllabus and teaching materials, creates and develops e-learning, tries and revises the media. The research result is by applying a sound table together with songs and games provided on PROTATIK (Program Tabel Fonetik in Indonesian), the students? attention is increasing, and they are more enthusiastic in learning English pronunciation. Besides pronunciation, the students can also master some new vocabularies, spelling and simple words. Through songs and games, the students can also memorize and say simple words in English. The application of sound table, songs and games media which can be found in www.protatik.com also helps lecturers in teaching. Songs and games are expected to become the appropriate teaching media for the students.
