This study examined post-release survival in sand flathead (Platycephalus bassensis) and whether there were survival benefits from the use of circle hooks over conventional hook patterns. Anatomical hooking location was the major factor contributing to mortality, with an almost 100% survival rate for fish hooked in the lip, mouth or eye (shallow-hooked) compared with around 64% for fish hooked in the throat or gut (deep-hooked). Mortality in deep-hooked fish was generally associated with injuries to vital organs (gills, heart, liver) and survival was significantly lower if bleeding was associated with injury (54% compared with 85% for non-bleeders). Circle hooks resulted in significantly lower deep-hooking rates (1%) compared with conventional hook types (4–9%) and, based on catch rates, were at least as effective as conventional hook patterns. Short-Term Hooking Mortality of Summer Flounder In New York and Virginia

Summer flounder support an important recreational fishery in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. State fishery management agencies have imposed size and creel limits in an attempt to reduce summer flounder fishing mortality, in conjunction with overall mortality reduction guidelines as specified in amendments to the Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Seabass FMP jointly authored by MAFMC and ASMFC. Despite these management measures, few data are available for the estimation of angling mortality following the catch and release of sub-legal fish. The authors and numerous volunteer anglers captured a total of 461 summer flounder (216 650mm TL) using sport-angling tackle in New York and Virginia during the period September 1997 to October 1998. The fish hook is a commonly known tool used in recreational fishing, which is one of the forms of active, specialised tourism. As a component of a fishing rod, the hook is intended to be anchored into the mouth of a fish and hold the fish on the end of the line while landing it. However, in the context of the protection of living aquatic resources and Catch-and-Release (C&R) fishing, its role and significance are becoming broader. In addition to the impact of the hook type on fishing efficiency, including the Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE), the importance of hook selection in terms of minimising the resulting damage to the tissues of caught and released fish is increasing.
