In the management literature is often encountered with the concept of generation. For example, generation X, Y, millennia’s, and so on. In this article we are looking for an answer to what is the generation, as it is characterized from a management point of view. From the management perspective we consider the selection of those parameters that support managerial decision-making in a real situation. Therefore, they are practically applicable. In the first part we examine the correlation between the generations and Kopčaj development cycles. The second part dealt with the appropriateness of certain characteristics and parameters of generations to manage. In the third part we describe briefly the results of the survey of these parameters in the Slovak companies. The first part of this article deals with the uses of the concept of generation in the historical and social sciences. Following Mannheim's approach, generations are conceived as produced by the differential impact of socio-cultural change on different age cohorts. The concept of ''crucial event'' in the biography of individuals is discussed in the light of developmental social psychology. Specific attention is devoted to the methodological problems in researching generations. The second part is devoted to the literature on political generations and to answering the question of whether and how 1989 and 11 September 2001 are producing generational phenomena in contemporary advanced countries.
Generational Challenges in Organisations
In this study, we reviewed the question of employability of the older generation following the changes in the demographic and economic situation with a particular focus on countries of the Visegrad Four and Hungary within the European Union. We proved by statistical analyses that the employment of people above 45 years of age increased most significantly in Hungary in the past 15 years. Here we can see the most remarkable increase in employment between 55 and 64 years of age among countries of the Visegrad Four. We described the most important campaigns which can help member states find solutions to handle the tensions caused by generational differences at workplaces. We analysed and proved that there are stereotypes in organisations in connection with members of the older generation even though it was confirmed that not all mental abilities decrease with age.

The complex interplay between demographics, societal developments and psychology, and the resultant effects on the workplace, forms the basis for this special issue of the Journal of Managerial Psychology. During the course of the twentieth century, many countries have witnessed a doubling of life expectancy for all of their citizens with life expectancy at birth surpassing or approaching 80 years in many western countries. For women, the picture is even more positive, with life expectancy increasing by at least three months per year since 1840. Due to a variety of political and financial as well as changing demographic factors, the age at which state pensions can be drawn have also been increasing, but often lagging behind the realities of an ageing population. State pension ages, traditionally considered to coincide with a retirement age of 65, are now approaching 70, both in the UK and in a number of other countries, not surprisingly, in the face of concerted opposition from the general population. In some cases, as in France, the retirement age remains at 60 and is only expected to move to 62 in 2018 due to the difficulty of introducing legislation in the face of strong opposition.
