EXPLORING STUDENTS’ WEAKNESSES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AT SHAQRA UNIVERSITY (HURIMLAA CAMPUS), SAUDI ARABIA

This research explores the reasons for the weaknesses of students of English Language at Shaqra University (Hurimlaa Campus), Saudi Arabia. University records show that students' marks in these courses are deteriorating and this research paper explores the reasons that might account for this. Spurred by this phenomenal reality, the researcher developed a questionnaire incorporating twenty questions covering four dimensions: educational factors, cultural factors, social factors and attitudinal factors with the ultimate aim of attributing the students' status to justifiable reasons. The analytical method was adapted through which noticeable results showed that almost half of the sample experienced difficulties with both reading and sentence structuring. Nearly 70% of the students surveyed thought that learning English is crucial for communication and understanding. These results suggest that students are aware of the importance of and need for this language, and that these shortcomings can be attributed to educational factors including schools, university, instructors and modules. This humble research does not, however, answer all questions arising from the general stance of the English Language in Saudi Arabia. Further studies are still needed to cover other educational institutions PEOPLE: International Journal of Social Sciences

Learning difficulties in English and pedagogy in Saudi arabia

Arabia serves a very limited purpose. Yet, it is very important for social as well as technological development. Therefore, English language teaching in this country in particular catches attention of many researchers. Teaching of English in Saudi starts at the school level. Despite good overall planning, purposive curriculum, integrated textbooks, qualified teachers, achievement is below the expectations. Therefore, diagnostic studies should better be undertaken in different language areas and skills so that the teacher may know the types of the problems and the corresponding factors. Such attempts are expected to be helpful in possible evolution of some fruitful and compatible strategies in order to yield the maximum academic output. Pedagogues have different views regarding English Language Teaching which may occasionally involve translation from First language to the target language and vice versa. On the other hand, the idea of Communicative approach to Language Teaching (CALT) is also significant in order to focus the skills. However, Bilingual approach can also be used as an alternative strategy.

what are the aspects affecting the usage of English language: Students Perspective in Saudi Arabia

The widespread use of the English language and the globalization of the worldhave made it mandatory for the English learners' to be more efficient in oral communication. Speaking is one of the most important skills to be developed and enhanced as means of effective communication. Many language learners find it difficult to express themselves in spoken language. Therefore, college students are required to have high oral English competence. They face many psychological obstacles or cannot find the suitable words and expressions. The inaccurate articulation and inadequacyof an English learner is an indication of the problem. The present study aims to explore the speaking problems of a cross-section of undergraduate students foundation level (Prep year), Nursing and Laboratory students in Communicative English in Al-Quwaiyiyah Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Our results demonstrated that most of the students like to communicate in English and be a part of the English-only environment; however they acknowledged some key factors that prevented them from speaking English. Fundamental factors included linguistics, individual, social, psychological and institutional which were largely based upon their beliefs, assumptions, needs and desires. This paper aims at establishing the need to focus on the factors affecting on language learners' English speaking skill. It may also help teachers and educators to understand the underlying factors that compel students to speak their first languages instead of English. Problems that Arab learners Face While Learning English

Problems that Arab learners Face While Learning English, 2023

This paper presents some of the difficulties that adult Arab learners face in learning English. Many of these difficulties result from the fact that Arabic and English have two different structures and two different systems. This situation of Arab learners versus English has rarely been approached by researchers and thus, the amount of information available for English teachers in the Arab World is inadequate. As a native speaker of Arabic, and a decades-long teacher of English, I have accumulated a wealth of information on the obstacles that Arab learners face in their attempts to learn English. I have presented the information in this paper at different institutions and conferences in the United Arab Emirates, but, of course with more details. I have written this paper in the anecdotal style that is based on my personal observation and certain primary research strategies.

Study of Cultural Challenges Faced by the Arab Learners of English in the United States of America

Learning English poses many challenges to ESL/ EFL learners. These challenges are often attributed to differences in two different languages and the two different teaching and learning environments. However, along with the language teaching and learning related difficulties, ESL/EFL learners from certain communities also face other challenges due to cultural differences. This is quite noticeable in relation to Arab learners travelling to western countries like USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Arab learners have to face cultural racism and negativity while studying and living in these countries. The negative portrayal of Muslims, particularly of the Arabs, has stereotyped Muslims and Arabs into certain types which further complicate their problems. They face difficulties in expressing their cultural and religious needs and adjusting in completely new and different culture. Being such students in the United States of America and having faced this problem personally, we have attempted to offer an overview of these cultural challenges faced by the Arab learners who travel to the States to pursue their higher educations. It is expected that the findings of the study may help the institutions and teachers in developing a teaching framework which would assist the Arab learners in overcoming their cultural challenges and coping with the same in the western countries like the USA.
