Study of noise pollution level in different places of Haridwar and Dehradun City (India
Noise level was studied in four different categories of area in Haridwar and Dehradun city viz. residential, commerci al, sil ent and i ndustrial zones. Study was carried out at 32 locations with sound level meter to asses day and night time noise levels of Haridwar and Dehradun. However, noise level in all the areas were found to be above the ambi ent noise standards level. In residenti al areas of Haridwar and Dehradun the noi se ranged between 77.40±4.52 to 89.90±8.87 dB (A) and 70.70±8.55 to 92.30±10.41 dB (A), respectively, while in commercial areas of Haridwar and Dehradun the noise ranged between 80.20±10.61 to 96.60±10.23 dB (A) and 80.90±6.63 to 89.10±9.81 dB (A), respectively.
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AMBIENT NOISE LEVELS AT COMMERCIAL, RESIDENTIAL AND SILENT ZONE IN GORAKHPUR
Urban areas with rapid modernisations are affected by noise related health issues. This noise pollutions coming from the road traffic noise, rail traffic noise, air traffic noise, industrial noise, community noise and other miscellaneous sources affects humans in our day to day life. Sound Level meter (Make Bruel and Kjaer-2232) was used to make the noise sampling at various locations on the highway of concerned. The main objective is to compare the noise level on the NH-28 and NH-29 with the prescribed limits by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and to assert the reason of the noise source agent on the locations. Traffic Noise Index with Noise climate was also calculated to give us a clear idea about the status of Noise in the concerned stations. Residential areas, Commercial areas and Silent Zone were taken into account to carry out our research work. To find out noise levels which people encounter in highways in their daily life, we carried our sampling on the roadside and walked along the places on the National Highways. Golghar (NH-29) has higher values of noise levels at it is the main commercial place in the city of Gorakhpur. The noise level at Army School (NH-28) is higher than that of St.Andrew Inter College (NH-29) which are categorised under silent Zone.
AN ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE POLLUTION OF JODHPUR, RAJASTHAN, INDIA

Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan, India. In recent years Jodhpur have expanded exponentially with increase in population, industries, vehicles etc. and this growth has created the problems like noise, air and waste pollution to name a few. Noise pollution is one of the problems which are not being addressed seriously and hence the present study was undertaken. The noise levels Leq dB (A) were monitored at three sites namely Shastri Nagar (Lachoo memorial College of Science and Technology-LMC), Basni Phase I, and AIIMS main gate road site, grouped as Residential, Industrial and silence zone area respectively. The monthly observations were recorded during morning hour (8-10AM), noon hours (12-2PM), and evening hour (5-7 PM) using sound level meter (Envirotech Instruments) model SLM 100, taking the readings at an interval of 1min, from December 2017 to April 2018. The maximum noise level recorded at Shastri Nagar,(LMC) site was 87.0dB in January 2018 (12-2PM), at Basni Phase I site was 97.2dB in December 2017 (8-10 AM), and was recorded 91.6dB in April 2018 (5-7 PM) at AIIMS main gate road site. The average noise level were found to be more than prescribed limits set by Central Pollution control Board (CPCB 2000) at all the three sites for all the five months and all the three recording hours (8-10AM, 12-2PM, and 5-7 PM), except at Basni Phase I site when it was observed to be slightly below (CPCB limit 75 dB-observed level 71.66 dB &73.67 dB) in January 2018(8-10 AM) and February 2018 (12-2 PM) respectively. The present study can be fruitful in devising effective methods to curb this problem.
Besides growing levels of air and water pollution, road traffic induced noise pollution has been recognized as potential threat to feasible quality of life especially in the urban areas. The accelerated pace of economic development urbanization, and increased vehicular mobility has affected remotest location of India and the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand is no exception to it. The serenity and tranquility for which it’s acknowledged globally, is growingly affected by traffic induced noise pollution caused by inflating Pilgrimage/tourism industry, rampant road constructions, encroachment, traffic mismanagement etc. The peak pilgrimage season brings with it uncontrolled traffic influx in the region. All the major pilgrimage towns located on the national Highway from Rishikesh to Badrinath are affected by the vehicular Noise pollution and traffic congestion especially during the holy pilgrimage season. The study tries to evaluate the Noise pollution problem in one of the important towns of Uttarakhand ‘Srinagar ’located 105 kms upstream from Rishikesh, on NH-58. Heavy movement of traffic and illegitimate usage of horns is considered main cause of noise pollution in the town which grows irrationally during the yatra season. The average number of vehicular flow was observed to be 890 vehicles/day during the yatra season (May) as compared to 575 vehicles/day during the non yatra season(January). The the average noise intensity levels of the town was recorded to be 70dB and noise levels have reached at an alarming stage. It was observed that in 4/5 noise monitoring location, the noise intensity was above the prescribed noisestandard level of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS). The vulnerability to various noise induced health hazards was also very high in the area because the valve of R was 0.78.
Measurement and Analysis of Noise Levels in the Sensitive Areas of Mysuru City, India

Due to the particular characteristics of hospitals, the hospital buildings are highly sensitive to environmental noise. However, they are usually located close or within urban agglomerations and in particular main roads. Hence, hospitals are, in many cases, exposed to high levels of environmental noise. In this study of comprehensive one-month research project, traffic and community noise levels were measured and monitored at five sensitive areas (near hospitals) in its spatial-temporal aspect, at the city of Mysuru, Karnataka. Noise measurements were taken at different peak sessions in morning and evening, for duration of one hour. Observed noise values were analysed and compared with the recommended permissible limits (40-50 dB) as stated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The measured values exceeded the CPCB noise limits prescribed for sensitive areas. This paper presents an analogy of obtained noise readings with the national CPCB standards for silent zones.
Evaluation of Noise Pollution: A Case Study of Udaipur, Tripura, India

Noise pollution is considered to be one of the biggest problems in any urban livelihoods. Unplanned urbanization coupled with rapid growth of vehicular population causes increasing trend of noise pollution problem. Industrial activity, construction activity, use of loud speakers & public addressing systems, vehicular horns and other mechanical devices etc. in and around the town are the various noise sources have contributed deleterious effect on human health. The present study is an evaluation of present trend of noise in the Udaipur town areas. Equivalent noise levelis monitored in nine different stations in different parts of the town area and observed that the noise level is much above the statutory limits of Central Pollution Control Board. This study reveals that some areas of Udaipur town are highly exposed to the noise pollution.
Assessment of Outdoor and Indoor Noise Pollution in Commercial Areas of Gorakhpur City

Acoustic noise beyond a level is harmful. Noise pollution in the recent times has been well recognized as one of the major trepidations that impact the quality of life in urban areas across the globe. The present work, shares the assessed data regarding indoor and outdoor noise levels in the commercial areas of Gorakhpur city. Selected points as per their purpose were sampled in commercial zone in order to cover the whole commercialized and populated area of the city. The observation sites were selecte d at eleven different locations in commercial areas of Gorakhpur city and Energy Equivalent noise (Leq) for hourly observations for indoor and outdoor noise were made at these sites. The relative standing of outdoor and indoor noise with respect to regulatory norms was looked into and the range of minimum and maximum values of Leq was also workout. It is found that the outdoor noise levels are influenced by traffic volume and congestion, user's generators and crowd on roads. It is also seen that, on many sites, significant increase in indoor noise is observed only in the afternoon hours around 3:00 pm-4:00 p.m. when large number of customers starts flowing into the shops after getting free from offices, schools and colleges and other establishments and commercial activity picks up. It is also observed that, even though there is a reduction in the noise level at indoor points as compared to outdoor points yet it is a point of concern that for most of the time during the day both the outdoor and indoor noise levels for beyond the maximum permissible limit of 65 dB, thus it is concluded that there is a need to adopt suitable control measures for the reduction of noise at outdoor and indoor points. It is suggested that implementation of speed limit to vehicles on road, provision of silencers and sound proof cage of generators, traffic decongestion and diversion, phasing out of old noisy vehicles, declaration of no horn zone and provision of noise barriers, wherever feasible, along with tree plantation may be considered for reduction of outdoor noise. The provision of sound absorptive surfaces and panels within the interior of the shops, regular servicing of fans, air coolers, air conditioners and other appliances and behavioral changes may be resorted for reducing indoor noise.
Assessment of noise pollution in Raipur city of Chhattisgarh, India

In developing countries like India Assessment of Noise pollution is important task. Noise pollution adversely affects the health of human beings. The most important noises sources of noise are road traffic, aircraft, railways and industries, noise in the community from industrial and construction site and noise at home. Road traffic is by far the largest of these and accounts for about 78 per cent of noise annoyance. In India, vehicular traffic is increasing rapidly, which has given birth to overcrowded roads and noise pollution. This study is primarily focusing on the monitoring of noise pollution at different places in Raipur City. In this study, noise monitoring was carried out with the help of a sound level meter model (VA8080). Some important places of Raipur have been selected for noise level study purpose. All the places are categorized under different zones i.e. commercial zone, silent zone, industrial zone and residential zone. All data were collected between 07:00 am to 09:00 p.m. Every hour the noise levels have been measured. To make the noise level more accurate each reading were taken in a gap of 6 minutes, that is, 10 readings per hour. And the average of the readings was taken as per hour sound intensity level. The study period of the survey was 15 days. Therefore this study reveals that the noise levels are higher than the standard level for each zones.
Assessment on different levels of noise pollution in Aizawl City, Mizoram, India
Assessment of noise pollution was carried out in Aizawl city of Mizoram during August 2009 to July 2011. Different levels of noise were recorded from industrial zones, commercial zones, residential zones and silence zones by using Sound Level Meter 2031/A. Of all the four zones, residential zones and silence zones were found to exceed the standard prescribed by the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. Among the commercial zones New Market and Zangena Petrol Pump exceed the standard level. And all the study sites under industrial zones were within the standard level. Purpose – The study examines and investigates the problem of noise pollution in relation to its harmful effects on the human life. This study provides most appropriate definition of noise, identifies various sources of noise, investigates awareness level of public for noise, examines harmful effects of excessive noise and provides valuable suggestions for controlling the noise level. Methodology - This study is based on primary data collected from population of Delhi through a structured online questionnaire with sample of 350 respondents. The analysis has been carried out based on “cross-classifications’ in terms of ‘age’ as well as ‘gender’. Findings – This study revealed that male community is more aware about the noise pollution compared to female community. Most of the community is ignorant of what constitutes noise pollution as well as its adverse socio-economic & health impacts. Further the control of noise pollution has been hampered by insufficient knowledge of its harmful effects on human. The sound from traffic and loudspeakers is turned out major sources of outdoor noise pollutants. Primarily “traffic volume” expanded by road, rail and air traffic as a noise has gained wider recognition in terms of increasingly serious risk to human health. In case of indoor pollutants, television and different home appliances are reported as major noise sources. Even youngsters are also victim of noise at large scale. Noise extensively results in annoyance, disturb sleep, harmful effect on hearing, reduce working efficiency and interfere with communication. Public awareness programmes, education and technological solutions appeared to be the best methods to achieve the goal of noise reduction. Government can also play a significant role in putting efforts towards reduction of noise level by establishing & enforcing noise guidelines, standards and strict regulatory framework. Research Limitations and Practical implications – This study is limited to population of Delhi metro city in India. The findings in this study have several policy implications. Government should develop management strategies and action plans for noise control. The empirical evidences gathered through this study can be employed for developing appropriate legal and public action programs and awareness programs to disseminate knowledge about harmful effects of noise on human health and routine life.
