Aspects Regarding the Use of Self-Compacting Concretes

2009

Concrete’s performances have continuously risen in order to accomplish the society needs, so they passed over traditional needs regarding their strength and workability. Self-compacting concrete is an innovative concrete that does not require vibration for placing and compaction. Ultra high performance concrete UHPC -is well-suited to the use in sustainable and cost-efficient structures, also to entirely new assembly and design methods. UHPC mainly results from its better workability self-compacting concretes very low w/c ratio, higher strength, and increased durability. The experimental program has taken into account two main directions: establishing the recipe for SCC using Glenium ACE 30 as additive and realizing two prestressed beams made of SCC, which were prefabricated and tested on special stands. Conclusions of the paper prove that in construction practice and performance, combined with the health and safety benefits, make SCC a very attractive solution for both precast conc...

A Comparative Study on Mechanical Properties of Normal Vibrated Concrete and Self Compacting Concrete

Abstract: Self- Compacting Concrete (SCC) is a special type of concrete that is able to flow and compact under its own weight and can occupy all the spaces in the form without any vibration effect and at the same time cohesive enough to be handled without bleeding or segregation. SCC is a highly flowable concrete which is able to fill the formwork with admixtures such as Fly Ash (FA), Silica Fume (SF), Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), and Metkaolin (MK) etc. There are no standard mix design procedures available for SCC. In the present work, Normal Vibrated Concrete (NVC) and SCC were developed for M30 grade. NVC is designed by using IS code method and SCC is designed by using Nan Su method. Study of SCC with and without mineral admixtures such as SF and FA was made separately at different percentages as 10%, 20%, and 30% respectively by using appropriate dosage of super plasticizers (SP) and viscosity modifying agent (VMA).The workability properties of SCC such as filling ability, passing ability and segregation resistance are evaluated using workability tests such as slump flow, V-funnel and L-Box tests. Strength properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of NVC and SCC were also studied. Keywords: The Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC), Normal Vibrated Concrete (NVC), Fly Ash (FA), Silica Fume (SF), super plasticizers (SP). Self-Compacting Fiber Reinforced Concrete for Precast Industry

International Journal of Structural and Civil Engineering Research, 2018

The Self-Compacting Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SCFRC) is a composite cementitious matrix, with an added amount of discrete fibers. The increase in tensile strength, the inherent ability to control cracking and the consequent increase of the absorbed energy are the main properties benefited from the introduction of fibers. Regarding the consistency of the concrete, there is a decrease in its workability with the increased addition of fibers. Given this problem and due to the need to build lighter, slenderer elements and still meet the precast industry requirements, in particular its production cycles, it is required the use of a self-compacting concrete. This paper describes an experimental study to obtain a self-compacting fiber reinforced concrete formulation, suitable to develop new solutions of non-structural precast elements in buildings. The work focused on studying the influence of several parameters on fresh and hardened SCFRC properties. Based on Faury's reference curve various mixtures have been developed, , with a water / cement ratio ranging from 0,30 to 0,35. In all mixtures, the dosage of steel fibers and the volume of cement remained constant. For all the compositions, the slump flow and the compression strength were evaluated and analyzed. 

A Review on Self Compacting Concrete

International Journal of ChemTech Research, 2017

This paper gives a review on Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) to be made using various Mineral Admixtures and Fibers. In current scenario of construction industries due to demand in the construction of large and complex structures, which often leads to difficult concreting conditions. When large quantity of heavy reinforcement is to be placed in a reinforced concrete (RC) member, it is difficult to ensure fully compacted without voids or honeycombs. Compaction by manual or by mechanical vibraators is very difficult in this situation. That leads to the invention of new type of concrete named as self-compacting concrete (SCC). This type of concrete flows easily around the reinforcement and into all corners of the formwork. Self-compacting concrete describes a concerete with the ability to compact itself only by means of its own weight without the requirement of vibration. Self-copacting concrete also known as Self-consolidating Concrete or Self Compacting High Performance Concrete. It is very fluid and can pass around abstructions and fill all the nooks and corners without the risk of either mortar or other ingredients of concrete separating out, at the same time there are no entrapped air or rock pockets. This type of concrete mixture does not require any compaction and is saves time, labour and energy. This review paper explains the utilizationof fibers and various mineral admixtures in the properties of Self Compacting Compacting Concrete.

An Overview on the Development and the Research Work on Self Compacting Concrete

2016

Concrete is the construction material which have been used from early times. The materials which are used for buildings, industries and for other purposes should be environmental friendly during usage. Self-compacting concrete is the most innovative type concrete in the recent days. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) does not require any type of vibration during its placement and compaction. The concrete is able to keep moving under its own weight through any type of formwork without any external compaction and even the concrete can flow through congested reinforcement. The amazing thing about SCC is that though it is not a conventional concrete but in its hardened state it is dense homogeneous and has same durability aspects as the normally vibrated concrete. To get the properties of fresh concrete for SCC mineral and chemical admixtures are added. An overview paper is presented based on research work of SCC through this decade. The test data says that the mechanical properties of SCC ...

RTA Study on the Use of Self-Compacting Concrete

Self-compacting concrete (also known as Super-workable concrete in Australia and Self-consolidating concrete in North America) is defined in EN 206 Part 9: Additional Rules for Selfcompacting Concrete (SCC) as concrete that is able to flow and compact under its own weight, completely fill the formwork with its reinforcement, ducts, box outs etc, whilst maintaining homogeneity. A study on self-compacting concrete was conducted by RTA Bridge Engineering for the possible use of SCC in certain reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge elements where mechanical compaction is hindered by OHS requirements and often times not practically feasible to assure a homogeneous concrete end product. Self-compacting concrete is considered as an improvement on the current applications of high or very high slump flowable concrete. This paper will discuss the conducted study that includes laboratory mix design trials, full scale field trials and the project verification trials. The study resulted in t...

Experimental Study on Self Compacting Concrete Having Grade M70

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete mixture that is able to consolidate under its own weight. The highly fluid nature of SCC makes it suitable for placing in difficult conditions and in sections with congested reinforcement. Use of SCC can also help minimize hearing-related damages on the worksite that are induced by vibration of concrete. Another advantage of SCC is that the time required to place large sections is considerably reduced. When the construction industry in Japan experienced a decline in the availability of skilled labour in the 1980s, a need was felt for a concrete that could overcome the problems of defective workmanship. This led to the development of self-compacting concrete, primarily through the work by Okamura 1. A committee was formed to study the properties of self-compacting concrete, including a fundamental investigation on the workability of concrete, which was carried out by Ozawa et al 2. at the University of Tokyo. The first usable version of self-compacting concrete was completed in 1988 and was named " High-Performance Concrete " , and later proposed as " Self Compacting High-Performance Concrete ". In Japan, the volume of SCC in construction has risen steadily over the years 3. Data indicate that the share of application of SCC in the precast concrete industry is more than three times higher than that in the ready-mixed concrete industry. This is attributable to the higher cost of SCC. Keywords— Self-compacting concrete, workability, Fly ash, Micro silica, super plasticizer and VMA. Applications of SCC results in a large payoff in not requiring vibration to achieve consolidation and the low noise level to meet stringent environmental requirements in urban and suburban construction sites. Less labour and speedier construction will result in substantial cost savings, less traffic disruption and risk reduction. Better durability and high strength will allow the engineers to design and build bridges to last a century and beyond.
