Greek kouphos and further evidence for laryngeal as resonant (original) (raw)

Abstract

A long discarded etymology connecting the Greek word with Balto-Slavic and Germanic cognates is rehabilitated on the basis of a fresh semantic consideration together with the common lack of demonstrable e-grade forms, here explained by the presence of h3 in the root onset. The assumed inhibiting effect of h3 on assibilation of the assumed root-initial prevelar/ palatovelar ino- nand zero-grade forms ushers in a wider range of possible Balto-Slavic cognates permitting a motivated answer to the ongoing question of the relationship between the groups containing OE geap 'wide' and geap 'bent', respectively. A possible etymology is suggested for the previously largely isolated group of Lith. Zaubiu 'eat with full/ open mouth'.
