Interventions across the Retirement Transition for Improving Well-Being: A Scoping Review

(1) Background: The work-to-retirement transition involves a process of psychologically and behaviorally distancing oneself from the workforce that is often accompanied by other social changes, which can influence health and well-being. However, research on interventions targeting the work-to-retirement transition to improve health status is limited. Our objective was to summarize and describe interventions aiming to improve well-being across the retirement transition; (2) Methods: We conducted a scoping review following the methodological framework described by Arksey and O'Malley; the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines as well as the PRISMA-ScR statements; we systematically searched articles and gray literature to identify interventions and policies that aimed to improve well-being across the retirement transition. (3) Results: 15 publications were included, which comprised both experimental designs (n = 10) and systematic reviews (n = 5). (4) Conclusions: More research on how to promote overall well-being during the work-to-retirement transition is needed. The results of this scoping review show that most reported interventions address one single lifestyle behavior, and that relevant social determinants of health have been barely considered in their design. Future investigations need to consider vulnerable groups and country-specific structural conditions. Adopting a patient and public involvement approach will contribute to developing interventions that address the significant needs of those in the transition to retirement.

Living Well in Later Life: From Prevention to Promotion
This paper has its origins in a range of research and development activities conducted in the Nuffield Institute for Health over a number of years. In its current form, the paper is based on a presentation to an 'expert seminar' held at the Department of Health earlier this year. The seminar was sponsored by ADSS, BGOP, Help the Aged and the Nuffield Institute for Health. We are grateful to all of those who took part and shared their views so enthusiastically. What should mature-age workers do to promote health and wellbeing in retirement?
The Healthy Retirement Project began in 1998 and was completed at the end of 2002. The Project was conceived in response to dissatisfaction with the quality of the programs currently available to help retirees (which concentrate largely on financial advice) and a need for up-to-date information on retirement to assist the development of new programs for retirees. The project recruited a group of people who retired in 1998-1999 and followed them for three years. This article describes some preliminary results from the study, focusing on the factors found to make a difference in how well people adjusted to retirement.
Successful transition to later life: Strategies used by baby boomers

Aim: We sought to understand strategies employed by baby boomers to maintain well-being and facilitate transition to later life. Method: A non-clinical cohort (n = 139) provided qualitative data about well-being strategies. Thematic data analysis provided insights for those with high and low life satisfaction (based on Satisfaction with Life Scale) and quantitative data from previous waves provided predictors of life satisfaction decades later. Results: Longitudinal predictors were depression history (cognitive trait and repeated episodes) and quality of partner's care. 'Highly satisfied older people' reported proactive strategies, contrasted with lack of planning by 'dissatisfied older people'. 'Resilient older people', with high life satisfaction despite repeated depressive episodes, reported benefit from strategies dealing with adversity, including depression. Discussion: Strategies of 'satisfied older people' support theories of proactive coping and demonstrate the importance of developing adaptational skills to support later life satisfaction. In 'resilient older people' adaptive strategies can lead to achievement of life satisfaction despite repeated depressive episodes.

Purpose: This study aimed to describe community-dwelling older adults' perceptions of health and well-being in life after retirement. Methods: This study is part of a larger project using a mixed-methods design to address lifestyles' influence on community-dwelling older adults' health. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 older adults in age 70 to 95 years. Data were analysed according to a phenomenographic approach. Results: The results encompass four categories describing variations in community-dwelling older adults' perceptions of health and well-being after retirement: feeling well despite illness and disease, interacting with and being useful for oneself and others, independently embracing opportunities and engaging in life, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Conclusions: The absence of illness and disease is not a clear prerequisite for a sense of health and well-being. To promote and preserve health and well-being after retirement, older adults strived for-and coached themselves to uphold-a balance in life, focusing on not burdening others. This life orientation after retirement must be acknowledged by society at large, especially from an ageist perspective, and in health and social care to preserve and promote health and well-being.
Well-Being During the Transition from Work to Retirement

We investigate the consequences of retirement from work for the overall well-being of individuals aged 50 and above. The overall well-being is approximated by two indicators: the life satisfaction indicator which is a cognitive reflection of the satisfaction with life and a multidimensional indicator about Control, Autonomy and Self-realizations (CAS). The latter indicator is related to the capabilities concept (specifically agency-freedom) of Sen (1985, 1999). It evaluates overall well-being by the level of agency or the ability of people to pursue the things they want to do and be the humans they want to be. Using the longitudinal Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we find that employed and recently retired respondents have no different level of life satisfaction. Older workers do report a higher level of agency-freedom when they retire. This paper additionally investigates several forms of heterogeneities in the transition from work to retirement. We consider partial, early and joint retirement, part-time and self-employment, and job quality. We also investigate whether the extra leisure time of retired respondents affects well-being. We find that there is no difference in overall well-being between being partially and fully retired, between being retired before or after the normal retirement age or between those who retire simultaneously with their partner and those who don't. However, for some older workers, such as those employed with a low quality job, retirement can be a relief from their current employment status. Retired respondents have more care duties which affects their well-being negatively. Charity work and sport activities affect well-being positively.
Achieving Well-Being in Retirement: Recommendations from 20 Years of Research
She has recently retired from 35 years of teaching, research and senior executive roles in universities, and is undertaking a longitudinal Australian Research Council funded project on retirement transition. She was previously an associate editor for the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Vocational Behavior, and is currently on the editorial board of several journals.
Well-Being Throughout the Senior Years: An Issues Paper on Key Events and Transitions in Later Life
Social Development Canada's mission is "to strengthen Canada's social foundations by supporting the well-being of individuals, families and communities and their participation through citizen focused policies, programs and services"(Social Development Canada 2005a). Well-being is a concept that goes beyond good health to encompass physical and mental fitness as well as social fitness (being able to perform one's social roles and the demands of everyday living adequately). As people age, they experience a number of transitions in their lives. They may retire, change residence, loose a spouse, become a caregiver, and/or develop a health problem or disability. These transitions, especially when they occur around the same time, may impact on their well-being and independence and prevent them from being contributing members of society. This paper summarizes the research on what we currently know about the key events and transitions experienced by seniors, their impacts, and the resources seniors have or need to successfully cope with these events throughout the senior years. It will also review what we know about opportunities, gaps or barriers in accessing social support programs and service delivery designed to assist seniors in coping successfully with adverse events and life transitions. Issues to be considered include availability, access and costs of community support and home health care services. Finally, the paper will attempt to provide potential policy research directions to address current knowledge gaps. This is an extensive literature, and we have limited the scope by focusing on the last 10 years of Canadian research published in Journals and by Statistics Canada. We have favored research based on national studies in this review, though there are many excellent case studies and qualitative studies that add texture to our knowledge. Recognizing that the senior population is a very heterogeneous group, this review will examine (where the research permits) differences by senior life-course stages, and other target groups such as women, the disabled, visible minority, immigrants, Aboriginal peoples, sub-regions, low income, and persons living alone. This review of the literature has shown that while we have basic information about many of the transitions in seniors' lives, there is very little information about the various life course stages or about various sub groups of society.
