Book Review of A Historical Theology of the Hebrew Bible

Journal of the Evangelical Theological Seminary, 2019

In this study, Konrad Schmid offers a historical clarification of the concept of "theology." He then examines the theologies of the three constituent parts of the Hebrew Bible-the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings-before tracing how these theological concepts developed throughout the history of ancient Israel and early Judaism. Schmid not only explores the theology of the biblical books in isolation, but he also offers unifying principles and links between the distinct units that make up the Hebrew Bible. By focusing on both the theology of the whole Hebrew Bible as well as its individual pieces, A Historical Theology of the Hebrew Bible provides a comprehensive discussion of theological work within the Hebrew Bible.

"Hebrew Bible Theology: A Jewish Descriptive Approach," Journal of Religion 96,2 (2016): 165-84

This paper brings the voice of a Jewish, Israeli, nonreligious Hebrew Bible (HB) scholar writing on Hebrew Bible Theology. Two topics are raised: First, a debate current among Jewish HB scholars, which focuses on the borders of the corpus for HB Theology and the question of the relationship between the HB and later literatures. Second, a challenge to both Christian and Jewish theologians and scholars of the HB concerning the terminology we use. The paper closes with a suggestion for a Jewish—that is, non-Christian—HB Theology that consists of a descriptive discussion of the talk to and about God.

Hebrews: Contemporary Methods – New Insights (ed. by Gabriella Gelardini; Biblical Interpretation Series 75; Leiden: Brill, 2005; Atlanta: SBL 2008).

The present volume contains a collection of fourteen essays applying the latest and neglected methods and offering new and innovative insights into the interpretation of the New Testament book To the Hebrews. The excitingly diverse contributions, which stem from an intriguing international group of senior and younger Hebrews, New Testament, and Old Testament scholars, are presented in three parts: Part One focuses on cultic language, concepts, and practice in Hebrews; Part Two on sociology, ethics, and rhetoric in Hebrews; and Part Three on textual-historical, comparative, and intertextual approaches to Hebrews. As the first ever compilation of essays on Hebrews by a range of authors, this volume presents an important contribution to the field of New Testament studies. It will particularly appeal to students, teachers, and scholars interested in a variety of critical perspectives on Hebrews and on the New Testament’s third great theologian next to Paul and John. Moreover, the treatment of hermeneutical, cultic, sociological, and comparative matters in the context of biblical, Greco-Roman, and rabbinic literature will make this collection valuable to an even broader readership.

Introduction to the Old Testament

2014

This volume introduces ancient Israel's Scriptures, or the Hebrew Bible, commonly called the Old Testament. It also traces the legacy of monotheism first found in the pages of the Old Testament. Where pertinent to the message of the Old Testament, the book explores issues of history, comparative religions, and sociology, while striking a balance among these topics by focusing primarily on literary features of the text. In addition, frequent sidebar discussions introduce the reader to contemporary scholarship, especially the results of historical-critical research and archaeology. Along the way, the book explores how the Old Testament conceptualized and gave rise to monotheism, one of the most significant developments in history. • Pays unique attention to the origins of monotheism, the common heritage of Jews, Christians, and Muslims • Includes generous number of illustrations, 20 freshly created maps, and frequent sidebar discussions in each chapter, as well as concise chapter summaries and glossary of terms • Has a web component that includes study guides, flashcards, PowerPoint lecture slides and a test bank Pays unique attention to the origins of monotheism, the common heritage of Jews, Christians and Muslims Includes a generous number of illustrations, twenty freshly created maps, and frequent sidebar discussions in each chapter, as well as concise chapter summaries and glossary of terms Has a web component that includes study guides, flashcards, PowerPoint lecture slides and a test bank

Th is book (declared "best academic book of the year" by the Association of Th eological Booksellers during the SBL Meeting at Boston in 2008) is, according to the Introduction by the editors (pp. xxiii-xxviii), a commentary on all those NT passages in which the OT is used, in the form of either quotations or probable allusions. As a rule, six questions are asked for quotations and for clear allusions: (1) What is the NT context? (2) What is the OT context? (3) How was the OT source used in early Judaism? (4) What is the textual background of the quotation or allusion? (5) How has the OT passage been interpreted in its new context in the NT? (6) What theological use does the NT author make of the OT quotation or allusion? Th e NT documents are discussed in their canonical order:

Methodology, Speech, Society: The Hebrew Bible

Scriptura, 2013

The appearance of this book has been made possible by the input of a number of dear people who believed in the project and thus contributed to its accomplishment. I would like to thank Professor Hendrik Bosman, the Chairperson of the Department of Old and New Testament of the Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch University, for his kindness and hospitality, and for being so trustworthy. Our numerous meetings and conversations have enriched my wife, Tzfira, and me. Spending time with his wife, Daléne, has shown us what a woman who is not only a teacher, but also a wife and mother, can achieve. The graduate Old Testament seminars, those Wednesday afternoon meetings, have been a source of inspiration to both Tzfira and me. In the course of the seminars, we have dealt with significant issues that gave birth to a number of the essays that are presented in this volume. Words of thanks to Liezel Meintjes, the chief editor at SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, and her staff for their warmth and friendliness. Funlola Olojede took it upon herself to prepare the index, check the coherency of the manuscript, and edit skilfully some of the additions.

The Hebrew Bible and Philosophy of Religion - An updated on recent related research (2012-2022)

JRAT - Bible and Philosophy, 2024

The complex relations between Hebrew Bible interpretation and the discipline of the Philosophy of Religion were last discussed in detail a decade ago (Gericke 2012). In the years that followed, the associated literature was seen as samples of a recent return to philosophy of religion as auxiliary discourse, albeit one that had yet to obtain a clear research profile (Schmid 2019). Shortly thereafter, evidence of a variety of philosophical approaches to the HB/OT as a distinct emergent current was provided (Keefer 2022). The original contribution of this article and its objective is to supplement and complement the related research by way of an update on the relations between the Bible and Philosophy with special attention to Philosophy of Religion.
