Preliminary wind analysis regarding different speed ranges in the city of La Plata, Argentina
Revista Brasileira de Meteorologia, 2012
La Plata city (approximately 800 000 inhabitants) has intense traffic and industrial activity; nevertheless, the city has no governmental air monitoring network for air pollutants and winds have been scarcely studied. Wind observations provided here (covering 1998- 2007) belong to a weather station that was contrasted against the unique governmental site in the city area (the Airport). The present preliminary study analyses wind direction frequencies according to wind speeds and emphasizes wind patters within the first hour after calm occurrences. Results show that independently of the wind speed, wind direction frequency roses are in general similar to each other. Low wind speeds may occur most of the time (on average 58.2 %) and together with calm occurrences (on average 17.1% ) constitute an important factor for the accumulation of air pollutants. The proposed "outgoing of calm" wind direction frequency roses were found to be appropriate to gain knowledge in the structu...

A statistical analysis is carried out on the behavior of wind speed at meteorological stations located in the Caribbean Region of Colombia, in order to establish and identify the potential available in wind energy to be used as a renewable energy source, this by through the use of rigorous periodic studies, carried out by the Colombian Institute of Environment, Meteorology and Hydrology (IDEAM), to have efficient energy management and encourage the start-up of wind farms, which satisfy the energy demand necessary for the supply of Vulnerable Populations in the Colombian nation, therefore, the meteorological stations and their location are described, a wind analysis is made at different heights and roughness of the study terrain, and wind persistence studies are carried out using the autocorrelation function (ACF), behavioral analyzes are made Hourly and annual wind rate, for the meteorological stations described, in addition, graphs of the wind direction or wind roses are presented, with greater stability in the annual periods. From which an analysis could be established that allows the use of wind energy potential to be viewed by adequately reaching the behavior of the wind for meteorological stations in the departments of Córdoba and Sucre located in the Caribbean Region. The department of Córdoba presents, according to its meteorological stations, an average wind speed value ranging from 1.3 m/s to 1.4 m/s, while in the department of Sucre, values of average wind speed of 0.85 m/s to 1.7 m/s.
Wind speed description and power density in northern Spain
Energy
Wind resources are increasingly being investigated as a clean alternative for generating energy. This paper analyses the daily wind speed recorded at 46 automatic weather stations located in Navarre, northern Spain, in 2005e2015. Key points are the surface density of stations and the range of time that ensure a faithful depiction of wind speed together with surface calculations from image analysis and correlation with height. Different statistics were used. Median wind speed at 10 m was low, about 3.3 m s À1 and its interquartile range was narrow, about 2.3 m s À1. Nearly half the surface shows a median wind speed above 3.0 m s À1. The method of moments was employed to calculate the parameters of the Weibull distribution. Around half of the surface presented a shape parameter above 2.25 and the scale parameter was above 4 m s À1 for nearly 41% of the region. Although wind resources are not suitable for wind turbine applications in most of the region, since the wind speed is low in low-lying areas, about 12% of the region is suitable for stand-alone applications and, moreover, a substantial part of the region, around 23%, presents satisfactory wind resources for the installation of wind turbines.
An assessment of wind energy potential was carried out in five sites (four onshore and one offshore) in SouthWest (SW) of Buenos Aires province (Argentina). We use high-resolution wind data (2 and 5 min) for the period 2009–2012. The power law was used to estimate the wind speed at 30, 40, and 60 m height from the anemometer position. Turbulence intensity and wind direction were analyzed. Statistical analyses were conducted using two-parameter Weibull distribution. A techno-economic analysis based on a set of commercial wind turbines was performed in those sites. The results derived from this work indicate that the SW of Buenos Aires province represents a promising area for the wind energy extraction, which would encourage the construction of wind farms for electricity generation.
Assessing wind, solar, and wave energy sources in the southwest of Buenos Aires province (Argentina)
Evaluation of the Wind Potential for Regions of the State of Espírito Santo
2005
The environment deterioration caused by the exploration of diverse power sources, increase the necessity of better exploring other natural resources for electric energy generation, particularly the renewable source fighting ambient problems, dependence of the traditional sources and reducing the increasing scarcity of energy. Among the renewable sources, the wind energy demonstrate some advantages in relation to the other sources, as easy operation, technological simplicity and long useful life of equipment. The evaluation of wind potential of a site is the first step to install a wind generator of electric energy. For this, it is necessary to treat data with statistical tools and, knowing the characteristics of the generator and of the local winds, evaluate the amount of electrical energy that is possible to generate. In this work a synthesis of the theory used for the estimation of energy potential is made and, from real data of speed and direction of wind, a first evaluation for ...
Wind Resource Potential in Los Taques Venezuela
The Venezuelan government has established more aggressive policies and incentives for renewable energy resources in recent time, especially in terms of wind power. Although several academic efforts to make publicly available wind energy resource data in Venezuela, there is a lack of information in terms of local wind resource putting in risk development in areas where potential is good enough for commercial exploitation. The objective of this paper is to presents a very comprehensive wind resource assessment at Los Taques, Venezuela based on on-site observation anemometry. This is unique paper because it is the first ever wind energy assessment in Los Taques using hourly data recorded during three years in an on-site ground weather station contrary to studies based on daily values based on radar or satellite data. The applied methodology has been developed based on the characteristic of the data obtained from the on-site anemometry. Results of wind energy assessment and evaluations on a 100 MW wind farm shows the wind energy resource available in Los Taques is enough for commercial use and the results

Preliminary study of long-term wind characteristics of the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula
Energy Conversion and Management, 2009
Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula is one of the most promising areas for wind energy development within the Latin American region but no comprehensive assessment of wind resource has been previously published. This research presents a preliminary analysis of the meteorological parameters relevant to the wind resource in order to find patterns in their long-term behaviour and to establish a foundation for subsequent research into the wind power potential of the Yucatán Peninsula. Three meteorological stations with data measured for a period between 10 and 20 years were used in this study. The monthly trends of ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure and wind speed data were identified and are discussed. The directional behaviour of the winds, their frequency distributions and the related Weibull parameters are presented. Wind power densities for the study sites have been estimated and have been shown to be relatively low (wind power class 1), though a larger number of suitable sites needs to be studied before a definitive resource evaluation can be reported.
