Quantitative assessment of biopllution caused by Mnemiopsis leidyi on ecological community structure in the southern part of the Caspian Sea

2015

After the arrival of the invasive spexies (Mnemiopsis leidyi) in the ecosystem of Caspian Sea in 1999, It had notable impacts. In this study, we,re assessing impacts of quantitative M. leidyi as a biopllutant on zooplankton community in the southern part of the Caspian Sea during 2001-2010 period. It becomes clear that Abundance and Distribution Range (ADR) of M.leidyi during 2001-2009 was in class E(occurrence in high numbers in all localities) and in year 2010 was in class D(occurrence in moderate numbers in all localities). from 2001- 2009, ADR in Summer season was in class E, but in summer 2010, relatinve biomass of M.leidyi has decreased and ADR was evaluated as D. During the fall seasons of 2001 -2010, only in fall of 2003 and 2010, the ADR was C(occurrence in low numbers in all localities) and D respectively and in other years, the ADR was in class E. In winter season relative biomass of M.leidyi decreased and only in winter of 2001 relative biomass was high and the highest A...

Technical and Economic Efficiency of the Marine Aquaculture in Damietta Governorate: Using Data Envelopment Analysis الکفاءة الفنیة والاقتصادیة لمزارع الإستزراع السمکى البحری فى محافظة دمیاط (بإستخدام مغلف البیانات)

Mağallaẗ Al-Iqtiṣād Al-Zirā'ī wa Al-ʿulūm Al-Iğtimāʿiyyaẗ (Print), 2017

Development of fish production which considers one of the essential animal protein sources becomes crucial issue. The production of fish is still insufficient to meet the consumption needs, which increases the food gap of fish. This study is to determine the levels of technical efficiency on a sample of fish farms using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and to identify key production factors that differ efficiently and inefficiently. The mathematical analysis ismainly based on data obtained by means of a questionnaire applied to a random 30 fish farms in Damietta Governorate. DEA is used to generate technical efficiency scores under assumptions of both constant returns to scale(CRS) and variable returns to scale(VRS). Technical efficiency has an average of 0.94 under CRS showing a wasting in the inputs by 6%. Allocative efficiency is about 0.91 and 0.96 under CRS and VRS, respectively. Also, the results show that there is a wasting in used resources where the economic efficiency is represented about 0.85 and 0.90 under CRS and VRS, respectively. This indicates that an average of 15%-10% potential scope still exists for improving the actual marine fishery production in Damietta Governorate with the given inputs. The results indicate that it is necessary to reduce farming area, labor, and fuel by 1%,4%, and 4.09%, respectively, as compared to the current used inputs. And fingerlings of sea bream should be decreased by 14.50% but the mullet fish fingerlings need to be increased by 7% as compared to the exsiting used inputs. Main problems facing fish farmers are limited resources of feed and marketing. The study recommends improving technical efficeieny rationalising the use of resources especially the fingerling, labor, and fuel in fish production to achieve the economic efficiency, in order to eliminate the food gap of fish in Egypt.

Qualitative and Quantitative study of Epipelic algae in Tigris River within Baghdad City, Iraq

Baghdad Science Journal

The present study conducted to study epipelic algae in the Tigris River within Baghdad city for one year from September 2011 to August 2012 due to the importance role of benthic algae in lotic ecosystems. Five sites have been chosen along the river. A total of 154 species of epipelic algae was recorded belongs to 45 genera, where Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms) was the dominant groups followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. The numbers of common types in three sites were 47 species. Bacillariophyceae accounted 88.31% of the total number of epipelic algae, followed by Cyanophyceae 7.14 % and Chlorophyceae 4.55%. A 85 species (29 genera) recorded in site 1, 103 species (34 genera) in site2, 112 species (35 genera) in site3, 96 species (32 genera) in site4, and 85 species (29 genera) in site5. Spatial and temporal distributions of epipelic algae were noticed in this study. The higher total number of epipelic algae (91504.01cell cm-2) was recorded at site 5 in spring 2012, while the low...
