Music as a Mnemonic Device for Foreign Vocabulary Learning

This study aims to explore the relationship between music and language learning-both processed in parts of the brain within proximity of each other. It is of value to determine whether it is beneficial to incorporate music when young EFL (English as a foreign language) learners acquire new vocabulary. Utilizing three age-appropriate songs from familiar cartoon movies, the groups of students underwent different music exposures: "chanting," "singing," "music video without caption," and "music video with caption." The research attempted to determine whether music can help young EFL learners with vocabulary acquisition and if so, which pedagogical practice leads to the optimal gains. Results found in this study proved that the better acquisition of novel vocabulary in EFL learning could be achieved with the help of familiar melodies, with "chanting" and "music video with caption" methods being the most effective and lead to immediate and prolonged learning. Based on the findings, optimal music teaching methods are discussed.
Music in the Foreign Language Classroom: How and Why?

Despite a positive attitude towards the use of music in the foreign language classroom, teachers rarely integrate music into their lessons. Studies suggest two main explanations for this discrepancy: a limited knowledge of adapted material and a lack of theoretical grounding to support the use of music in the foreign language classroom. This article aims at examining how and why music can be used in the foreign language classroom. The first section describes some musical methodologies frequently used for language acquisition over time and provides references to resources containing music-based exercises for foreign language learning. The second part reviews research studies about the potential benefits of music-related methodologies for language acquisition and for specific linguistic skills.
Using Song to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

Vocabulary mastery is one of the requirements for students to be able to communicate both in spoken and written. There are many ways to improve students’ vocabulary mastery used by the language teacher. This paper aims to examine the use of English song to motivate students in learning English. In addition, this concerns on the use of English song to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The respondents were fifteen elementary students of community groups of orphans An-nur Surabaya. The data were taken by assessing the students’ vocabulary mastery through pre-test and post-test, and analyzed to identify students’ vocabulary mastery. The result shows that students responded positively to this activity and indicated improvement in their vocabulary mastery. Thus, the study suggests that the use of English song is an effective media to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Vocabulary is the most important aspect in learning English for students, the more they know vocabulary, the easier they will understand English. In learning vocabulary, students usually use several techniques or methods. One of method that often used is listen to English songs. This research conducted to determine students' perceptions in the use of English songs in their vocabulary mastery. The method used in this research is qualitative method, where the instruments used are Questionnaire and Interview. First the researcher distributes a questionnaire that contain 5 questions, then after that the researcher conducts an interview with the subject that contain 5 questions. The subjects in this study were 5 English Education Students from one of State University in Medan to reveal their perception toward the use of English songs to their vocabulary mastery. According to the questionnaire data, the largest data were answered for 80% for the question of number 4, and 60% for numbers 1, 2, 3, and 5. From the data that have been analyzed, the results show that the use of English song improve and give effect to their vocabulary mastery .

STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS ABOUT THE USE OF SONG MEDIA IN LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY

This study is entitled student perceptions about the use of song media in learning English vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to find out how students think about the use of songs as a medium used in learning English vocabulary. The method used in this study is a qualitative method in which researchers use three instruments as a tool to collect data, namely observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Data obtained from the three instruments are presented in tables and diagrams. Participants involved in this study were 22 participants in which all participants were students from the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UIN-SU) taken randomly without considering the background of the participants. So the results obtained that the participants agreed that the use of media songs can be applied in learning English vocabulary and can improve student vocabulary. Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire found that as many as 90% of participants choose neutral, as many as 70% of participants choose very agree, as much as 57.5% of participants choose to agree, and as many as 5% of participants choose to disagree from all the answers given by researchers in filling out the questionnaire.
