Engineering Education is currently going through a transformation, driven by the need for educating better engineers and more engineers, and largely build on elements such as problem orientation, interdisciplinarity, internationalization, digitalization and sustainability. Engineering Education is currently going through a transformation, driven by the need for educating better engineers and more engineers, and largely build on elements such as problem orientation, interdisciplinarity, internationalization, digitalization and sustainability. In 2020, the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership EPIC (Improving Employability Through Internationalization and Collaboration) has combined all these elements, and demonstrated how international and interdisciplinary student projects, focusing on solving real-world problems related to sustainability, can be carried out in a setting where students mainly work together online. A total of 56 students from 7 EU and 2 international universities, with backgrounds ranging from Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering to Textile Technologies and Business Informatics were working on 9 different projects throughout the spring of 2020. The paper presents the experiences from the setup and discusses some general recommendations for setting up this type of projects. The paper goes through the stages of defining and carrying out the projects: Defining the overall framework, identifying problems/project proposals in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, identifying the students and assigning students to projects, preparing students and supervisors, organising the physical kick-off seminar, and supporting the online collaboration. We also discuss evaluation and handover of the solutions, to ensure the projects have a lasting impact. We conclude that the sustainable development goals provide a highly motivating framework for interdisciplinary, international student projects based on problem-based learning. We also note that a careful design and execution of the all the preparatory stages are crucial in order for the projects to succeed, and discuss specific recommendations for these.
This article presents a pilot project at Hamburg University addressing challenges of social sustainability to students of Psychology, Economics, and Business Administration. Especially developed for teaching sustainability, Interdisciplinary Problem-based Learning (iPBL) is a student-centered pedagogy, combining two different teaching methods: Problem-based Learning and Interdisciplinary Learning. Fostering a multi-perspective approach to highly complex problems like corruption, health inequality, and social inequity, students work in interdisciplinary teams consisting of 8 to 10 members. After reading the problem, they follow 8 steps to identify solution approaches: (1) clarification of terms and concepts throughout the disciplines, (2) formulation of an interdisciplinary problem statement, (3) brainstorming about monodisciplinary theories, models and methods related to the problem, (4) classification and structuring of brainstorming by identifying possible connections and discrepancies throughout the disciplines, (5) formulation of interdisciplinary learning objectives, (6) self-study by reading papers across disciplines, (7) interdisciplinary post-discussion, and (8) formulation of an integrative team statement. In each team, students assign roles (discussion leader, team member and secretary). Additionally, each team is supported by a tutor. While promoting interdisciplinary thinking to develop innovative solutions, iPBL is designed to enhance understanding of and competence in social sustainability.
Inquiry in higher education for sustainable development: crossing disciplinary knowledge boundaries

Purpose This paper aims to understand if a project work methodology proposed to students, based on an inquiry perspective and dealing with different dimensions of sustainable development, contributed to creating an interdisciplinary solution for a problem on sustainability challenged by food production and consumption, and also to understand if this methodological approach is perceived as important to their learning as professionals and citizens. A Sustained Effort for Educating Students about Sustainable Development
Rowan University has been developing a series of courses that address the importance of sustainable development and practices in the 21 st century. This paper details a series of courses taught in the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year, which emphasizes this practice. The first course in the series is titled "Issues in sustainable development" and is offered to freshmen students as a First Year Experience course and is funded through the Bildner Family Foundation and coordinated by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The course provides an opportunity for Rowan University students, in their earliest tenure, to experience the complexity surrounding issues about democracy, diversity and sustainable development. The course is team taught by faculty in Civil Engineering and the School of Business. The key objectives for this course are to (i) increase awareness about sustainability challenges and issues; (ii) explore appropriate frameworks for thinking about the institutional foundations of sustainability; (iii) understand the roles of different types of institutional actors involved in processes of development; and (iv) understand the environmental impacts of development and explore the role of appropriate technologies in developing sustainable strategies.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are not insulated from the challenges facing the planet and have been tasked as key stakeholders in sustainable development (SD). The preliminary data presented in this paper demonstrate that, over the last five decades, there has been a shift toward the categories of SD work that necessitate a collaborative culture that is not traditionally inherent in HEIs. It is offered that when HEIs align their institutional capacities with worldwide efforts to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030 and foster an intentionally collaborative culture, they will become better equipped to face their own unique challenges: becoming “changemaker” universities; collaborating with each other in the knowledge economy; placing students at the center of the teaching and learning process; and fulfilling their “third mission” to partner with external stakeholders and society. At the bottom lines : student initiatives for sustainable development in higher education

During the past few years, numerous student initiatives have been founded, which engage in Sustainable Development (SD) at their university and beyond. Working in such initiatives offers students a remarkable (sometimes self-organized) environment allowing them to generate key competencies beyond the regular curricula. Beside this learning spaces for the individual student, the initiatives contribute to an organizational implementation of SD at the universities itself. With the description of a self-organized lecture-series of the AG Nachhaltigkeit Erfurt e.V., a good-practice example for the initiatives' achievements is given. The potential of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education becomes tangible, especially in innovative forms of teaching and learning, like informal learning. Furthermore, a study of the Cultura 21 e.V. and the "Initiative für Nachhaltigkeit" (Initiative for Sustainability) of the University of Duisburg-Essen (Brocchi 2007) is presented, where systematic data of existing initiatives were collected and analyzed. The study and experience from collaboration with several initiatives reveal a high diversity of interpretations of ESD.
ETH-UNS case studies are ``transdisciplinary,'' university-based projects for sustainable development. This article introduces the ETH-UNS case studies 1991 to 1997. In particular, it examines, first, the role of experts and, second, the kind of collective reasoning in ETH-UNS case studies. We found a significant ``deprofessionalization'' effect: whereas there was a high share of professionals in former ETH-UNS case studies, relative experts with lower qualifications dominate in today's ETH-UNS case studies. Our analysis of this effect shows role conflicts between professionals and organizations as well as the importance of syntheses methods for organizing the collective reasoning in the ETH-UNS case studies. Discussion focuses on the specific organizational linkage between the use of experts and collective reasoning in environmental projects in the context of sustainable development.
