Background: Appendectomy is one of the most commonly performed procedures in abdominal surgery and the laparoscopic approach is gradually replacing the conventional laparotomy for acute appendicitis. Methods: A total of 108 patients with acute appendicitis who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy at JLNM Hospital Srinagar over a period of five years were evaluated in terms of feasibility and safety of the procedure at the District level hospital. It was an observational study. Results: The age of the patient ranged between 16 and 43 years, with 68 males and 40 females. Most (76.85%) of the patients had un-ruptured inflamed appendix. The mean operative time was 43 minutes with no intra-operative complications. Two patients required conversion to open surgery. Mean duration of hospital stay was 1.7 days. Eight patients had post-operative complications which were managed conservatively. Conclusions: Laparoscopic appendectomy is safe and feasible in expert hands, and can be done using low c...

Background: Incidental appendectomy is defined as the removal of a clinically normal appendix during non-appendiceal surgery. This study was conducted at RIMS, Ranchi to document effects of incidental appendicectomy on overall morbidity and mortality while performing the intra-abdominal operation and also to study the frequency of pathological findings in incidentally removed appendices and the correlation between the pathology in the appendix with known aetiological factors for acute appendicitis. Materials & Methods: The diagnosis of the primary intra-abdominal pathology was made on the basis of a detailed history through clinical examination, supported by laboratory investigations and confirmed during operation besides, the patients. The clinical setting-emergency or elective laparotomy in which the appendix was removed was noted. Laparotomy incision used was noted with regard to the case with which the appendix could be approached. The naked eye examination of the appendix was ...

The present study was carried out on 50 patients at tertiary care institution of Chhattisgarh in Central India for 2 year. This study is including patients of complicated appendicitis undergoing laparoscopic management. Parameters studied included Age, Gender, WBC count, wound infection, and hospital stay. Results: There was increase of total leukocytic count in most of the patients; mean WBCs were 12.71±5.37. 33 that patients had pus free IPF collection and perforated appendicitis (PA), 11 patients had turbid free IPF collection with AA (highly inflamed appendix), two case was mucocele of the appendix, two cases of appendicular abscess (3.3%), and two cases of gangrenous appendix. Conclusion: Management of complicated appendicitis laparoscopically is practicable, secure, and can present a small occurrence of infectious impediments, fewer post-operative pain, fast revival, and improved cosmesis on the cost of extended operating time than Open Appendectomy.
A study of surgical profile of patients undergoing appendectomy

Background: The most common cause of acute abdomen in surgical is appendicitis. Among the surgeries of abdomen performed all over the world, appendectomy is the most common operation performed. Many studies have shown variations of age, gender in acute appendicitis as well as the seasonal variations in the occurrence of acute appendicitis, although the cause is not found yet. Objective was to study the surgical profile of patients undergoing appendectomy. Methods: A total of 302 patients who have undergone appendectomy were included in the present study which was hospital based cross sectional study. The study was carried out for two years at Osmania General Hospital, Hyderabad, India. Permission from Institutional Ethics Committee permission was obtained. From each and every patient included in the study, initially Informed individual consent was taken. Results: The incidence of appendicitis is much more in females i.e. 60% compared to only 40% in males. Two-Year Experiences of 500 Appendectomies in Lahore General Hospital, Lahore
Cureus, 2022
Introduction Acute appendicitis is a leading cause of abdominal conditions in emergency departments. Evidence from research studies has indicated the efficacies of surgical procedures involving appendectomies. However, in Pakistan, there is a paucity of information regarding the epidemiology, clinical presentations, and surgical management of acute appendicitis. Objective This paper aims to report the epidemiologic data and findings of surgical management of acute appendicitis in Lahore General Hospital (LGH). The data was based on our two-year experiences of appendectomies in the hospital. Materials and methodology Data were collected retrospectively. The patients underwent appendectomies performed by the team of surgeons of Surgical Unit 1 of LGH in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department from July 2019 to October 2021. Results The total number of patients was 506, and the mean age was 26.8. Males (67.29%) and young adults aged 18-34 years were at higher risk of appendicitis. ...

Considering the high prevalence of appendicitis as well as the fact that the most common surgery is abdominal, wrong diagnosis might have irreparable consequences including patient's mortality. The goal of the present research was to examine patients who had appendectomy surgery after a medical diagnosis of appendicitis. This study was a retrospective descriptive-analytic research. The target population included all the medical files of patients who had visited Shahid Mohammadi hospital of Bandar Abbas once they felt an acute abdominal pain which was later diagnosed as appendicitis. Therefore, they had an appendectomy surgery. Their age ranged between 2 to 82 years. The data were analyzed using SPSS 15. Moreover, Chisquared test as well as Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation of qualitative variables. In this study, the medical files of 250 patients suffering from appendicitis were analyzed. 164 of them were male (65.6%) and 86 were female (34.4%)...

Introduction: Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdomen. The clinicalpresentation of appendicitis and its susceptibility to acute inflammation may be affected by thelength and position of vermiform appendix. Length and position of appendix are variable. Theaim of the study was to find the prevalence of retrocaecal appendix among patients undergoingappendectomy for appendicitis. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed in 264 patients undergoingappendectomy in Department of Surgery, Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar, Nepal 1st May, 2018to 15th May, 2019. Ethical approval was taken. Simple random sampling was done. The position ofappendix was noted before appendectomy. Subgroup analysis was done on the basis of gender andlength of appendix recorded in centimeters with a measuring scale immediately after removal ofappendix. Data was collected in excel and was analyzed in SPSS version 16. Results: Prevalence of retrocaecal appendix among patients w...

Background: This study was aimed to compare laparoscopic with open appendicectomy and ascertain the therapeutic benefit, in the overall management of appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendicectomy though widely practiced has not gained universal approval. Laparoscopic appendicectomy in India is relatively new and the literature is exiguous. Methods: The study group consisted of 100 patients suffering from appendicitis. 40 patients underwent laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) and 60 patients underwent open appendecectomy (OA). Comparison was based on length of hospital stay, operating time, postoperative morbidity, postoperative complications, duration of convalescence and operative cost in terms of their medians. Results: The rate of infections and overall complications (LA: 5%, OA: 11.66% were significantly lower in patients undergoing LA. The median length of stay was significantly shorter after LA (45% discharged 2nd day) than after OA (36% discharged on 4th day). VAS WAS 0-2 IN 60% cases LA and9-10 in 00% cases as compared to OA VAS Was 0-2 in15% and 9-10 in 3.33% cases. Conclusions: LA is associated with increased clinical comfort in terms of fewer wound infections, faster recovery, earlier return to work and improved cosmesis. Hospital stay for LA is significantly shorter and the one-time operative charges appear to be almost the same.
