Different faces of old age as perceived by the students of Polish studies
2020
The aim of the article Different faces of old age as perceived by the students of Polish studies is to present how old teachers perceive old age. The exemplification material consists of three texts: Winter tale. An essay on the old age of Ryszard Przybylski, “The Old Man’s Route”. An attempt at old age politics by Tadeusz Slawek and Lala Jacek Dehnel. Hermeneutical reading allowed for the creation of several images of autumn of life: a painful, marked by suffering attempts to overcome and suffering in a creative act; old age as a possibility of a deeper look at the spiritual dimension of human existence and old age reconciled with the laws of transiting the events immersed in the act of memorization.

The article aims to identify and describe phenomena associated with an extremely important phase of the individual’s life: transition to adulthood. The authors focus on presenting statistical data and demographic phenomena and comment on them with references to the sociological theories developed by Jeffrey Arnett, Ronald Inglehart, Ulrich Beck, as well as psychological theories developed by Anna Brzezińska, John Silva, and James Marcia. Early adulthood, between the ages of 20 and 30/35, is the time of acquiring and implementing social competences in three basic areas: (1) professional activity, (2) establishing social relations, including taking up civic activities, (3) starting a family and establishing intimate relationships. This applies to the majority of the population at this age. Since the beginning of this millennium, sociologists, psychologists, educators and above all demographers in Western Europe have pointed to the following demographic phenomena: longer education peri...
Old age in Poland Educational and social aspects
Introduction This book was born through the participation of authors in the Visegrad project, realized by representatives of four countries: Czech Republic (Charles University in Prague), Slovakia (Matej Bel University Banska Bystryca), Hungary (Hungarian Academy of Science), and Poland (Rotmistrz Witold Pilecki State Higher School of Vocational Education of Oświęcim). The project was coordinated by Renata Kocianova of the Charles University in Prague. The goal of the project was to confront data about the activity of seniors from particular countries in selected areas of social life and to create a comparative analysis which would present the specifics of the V4 countries. The result of these efforts is the publication Analysis and Comparison of Forms and Methods for the Education of Older Adults in the V4 Countries, published by the Department of Philosophy of Charles University in Prague (Kocianova 2013). The various data gathered during this undertaking were not used in the final publication; thus, the idea was raised to write a monograph concerning the current way in which Polish seniors work based on the aforementioned publication. Two key areas were chosen: educational and professional, in the wider social context. The first text, by Maria Zrałek, describes the Polish senior in a social context. The ageing of societies is one of the biggest challenges faced by the V4 countries, including Poland; thus, the proper economic and political actions are necessary to help avoid the negative consequences of this process. A new approach to the issue of an ageing society is a challenge at a national, regional, and local level. This includes: prolonging the length of professional activity of seniors, their active participation in social life, and creating the conditions for a healthy, independent, and satisfying life. In the second chapter, the educational activity of seniors is presented with reference to educational policy and institutional support. The author – Artur Fabiś – presents the non-formal and extra-formal area of teaching seniors, the role of the state and non-government branch. Moreover, using the example of universities and senior clubs, the author describes educational-cultural institutions which support the development of seniors. Reference in the text is given to the most popular areas of interest in Polish UTWs and the activities they undertake, and the author depicts the specifics of senior education from the seniors’ own perspective. In the final part, the author presents the conditions of training specialists in the matter of teaching older people in Poland. Łukasz Tomczyk focuses on the basic elements of teaching older people. The third chapter has a methodological character, depicting the didactic aspects of senior education in Poland. Firstly, the author sets out the general educational goals. The next section includes methods of teaching with examples of their use in the didactic functioning of UTW, completing the text with a definition of self-education. Moreover, the paper includes a section connected with teaching and the learning process and the principles of education which determine the right way to work with seniors. The aim of the chapter by Marcin Muszyński is to depict in a synthetic way the situation of older people in the labor market. Conclusions and recommendations were the formulated after an analysis of the existing data. The sources of information that were used in this paper include statistical data from GUS, and specialist literature on the subject. The existing data, which were the main point of interest, are mainly the results of research concerning the economic activity of older people in Poland gathered over the past few years. The first part of this subsection presents the general demographic situation in Poland, and then the concept of older people in the labor market is detailed. After this the situation of older people in the labor market is considered with reasons given for their low economic activity. Then, legislation is discussed that might offer more equality for older people in the labor market. The final part of the chapter presents the changing theoretical context of publications about the activity of older people, along with a summary. This publication is dedicated to specialists in social gerontology, students of the humanities and social specialties, and practitioners who work for the sake of older people. The authors would like to thank the reviewers prof. WSP TWP Dr. hab. Semków and doc. Stefan Chudy, Ph.D. for their feedback, all of which has improved the quality of this publication.
Seniors about ageing and old age – an example from Poland
Journal of Modern Science
Ageing of the population is an important phenomenon in the society, it is also the normal process of time-related change which begins with birth and continues until death. These changes include how a person feels and functions with respect to physical or mental competences. We can use numerous measures and classifications to analyse the advancement level of the ageing of society. The quality of ageing and the way of experiencing old age translate into seniors' activity and activation, and that very often depends on their health and the level of independence. Active lifestyle makes an individual feel needed, free and independent, he/she has the sense of belonging to smaller and bigger social groups, thus, the process of experiencing old age becomes delayed. The lack of activity has its consequences in the sense of loneliness and social isolation, or even premature death.

Deconstructing old age? On the evolution of social concepts of the late stage of life Streszczenie Główną tezą artykułu jest twierdzenie o znikaniu starości, rozumianej jako stan ze społecznie przypisanymi atrybutami, z przestrzeni publicznej.

BETWEEN SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL AGEING: SELECTED ASPECTS AND CONTEXTS
BETWEEN SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL AGEING: SELECTED ASPECTS AND CONTEXTS, 2019
We provide to readers the 11th volume of the “Czech-Polish-Slovak Studies in Andragogy and Social Gerontology” series. We are delighted to announce that the presented study is the result of the work of scientists from seven countries: Austria, China, Ghana, Hungary, Japan, Poland, and Russia. This international collection of texts is part of the global discourse on the determinants of adult education and the functioning of people in late adulthood. The 11th volume is a collection of research results that show both the positive and negative dimensions of ageing through the prism of research experience from various geographical and cultural areas. The researchers invited to the presented volume tried to illustrate the issues assigned to the following topics: ageing with dignity; retirement age; assumptions and conditions resulting from living in the home; the relationship between challenges concerning life expectancy and needs; care and ageing services; and foundations and potential changes in pension systems. The research results presented in this volume have a common denominator, which is caring for the quality of life of the older people regardless of their place of residence. Thus, the study “Between Successful and Unsuccessful Ageing: Selected Aspects and Contexts” brings new insights from scientists who scrupulously characterize the complexity of processes that affect the positive and negative conditions of functioning in old age, which is a mosaic of various nuances. Inviting readers to familiarize themselves with the content of the monograph, we would like to thank the reviewers who contributed to the improvement of the quality of the texts and open new fields for participation in further joint publishing projects.
Exploring the meaning of old age from the Czech adult perspective: A quantitative research study
Kontakt, 2019
It is believed that age is just a number, meaning that it does not dictate how to feel or how to act. However, empirical studies, on a representative sample, describing old age boundaries in terms of longevity and in words that best describe old age are, to our knowledge, lacking in the Czech environment. This article is, therefore, methodologically grounded in the quantitative approach, applying a descriptive design in the investigation of the interrelationships of the self-reported data taken from a representative Czech adult population perspective (n = 1,040). The research shows that most respondents consider age 70+ to be old age and associate it with illness, experience or wisdom. The majority of respondents wished to end their life at home. On the other hand, the ability of respondents to imagine life in a home for the elderly grows with increasing age, with women more often admitting this possibility. Women are also more likely to provide home care to a dependent family member. The willingness to provide informal care continues to increase, depending on age, higher level of education, and better living conditions. Besides gender and education, participants' willingness to move to a retirement home if necessary made the strongest contribution to the likelihood of their willingness to be a family caregiver. Based on the cluster analysis, respondents living in the Central and North Bohemia regions manifested a lower willingness to live in a retirement home and to provide home care.
The Achievement of Flourishing in the Elderly through Education at Pesantren
Gadjah Mada Journal of Psychology, 2023
This study aims to explore the flourishing in elders. In this study, the authors developed an in-depth interview based on Seligman's concept of flourishing. The interview has open questions, which were given to eight santri as research subjects aged 55 to 76 years. Data were analyzed using qualitative method i.e Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA) techniques. The results of the study showed that the elderly who were the research targets have fairly good flourishing achievement. They can do daily activities naturally formed from the results of habituation while in pesantren. They also have high independence and resilience as has been revealed in previous research which used quantitative methods that showed a high level of both variables. It can be concluded that the activities can increase the independence and resilience of the elderly who become santri and with habituation carried out can bring the elderly to achieve flourishing.
