IMPACT OF LOSS OF WATER SUPPLY IN OGONI LAND AS A RESULT OF OIL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION
Due to oil exploration and other human activities in Ogoniland, there are evidences of environmental degradation all over the area. These exploration and production activities has local detrimental effects and considerable imprint on the ambient quality of air, soils and sediments surface and ground water marine environment, biodiversity and sustainability of both the marine and the terrestrial ecosystems of the oil producing communities in Ogoniland. It has affected the socio-cultural aspects of the environment, not only leading to extinction of different viable plant species and water pollution but also affects the quality of life and health of the people in the host communities.Streams, wells and rain water harvesting have traditionally been used as sources of water supply before the exploration of oil in Ogoni Land. However these traditional sources of water supply have been severely contaminated by the oil exploration and production activity thus limited the options of the locals in accessing clean water. The purpose of this study therefore is to ascertain the impact of loss of water supply source in Ogoniland as a result of Oil exploration and production. A case study design was adopted for this research. It employed a positivist, quantitative approach to the development questionnaires. These questionnaires were developed and administered to the household heads in the study area. A total of 392 questionnaires were administered across eight sampled communities for the study. Out of the 392 sampled questionnaires administered, a total of 361 were successfully retrieved. The data gathered from the field was analysed using descriptive techniques The research revealed that the loss of water supply in the study area has led to an increase in the cost of accessing water, increased usage of unclean water, decrease in the general usage of water, loss of sources of income and general increase in health bills as a result of waterborne diseases. It is therefore recommended that more proactive steps be initiated to clean the impacted sites affected by the oil spills, while comprehensive groundwater monitoring be carried out to ascertain the present state of the groundwater as the clean up exercise continues. Moreso governments and its agencies should provide an easily accessible water supply scheme to provide sufficient safe water to meet community needs. This will drastically reduce the impact of contaminated water that may complicate existing health issues within the study area.
THE EFFECTS OF OIL SPILL IN AQUATIC LIVES AND PROPERTY IN KALABARI IN RIVERS STATE OF NIGERIA
This study investigates the causes and impacts of oil spill in Kalabar region in Rivers state of Nigeria to identify the suitable land management systems that will control oil spill so as to reduce it impacts on the Niger delta region of Nigeria.. The study adopts a qualitative and quantitative research through interviews, fishermen, periwinkle(Isam) pickers and the youths to identify oil spill impacts on community socioeconomic conditions. The collection of data involves the use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches concurrently. This was possible because the study focused on the effects of oil spill on aquatic lives and property. Purposive sampling Techniques, and Snow Ball sampling was used in selecting the sample size (where one-person links to another). (189) questionnaire were distributed in nine communities affected by the oil spill in Kalabari region, Rivers State out of which 138 questionnaire representing 122.45% of the total was retrieved and triangulated with data Snow ball sampling techniques, interview of selected people affected. The primary data was analysed using Statistical Packaged for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20).

Oil exploration and exploitation in Nigeria have evolved through a long history. However, they have left trail of woes in their path with so much damage to the ecosystem and problems to human life in the exploration region. In the light of this, the paper appraises the implications of oil exploration and exploitation in the coastal region of Ondo State. Data used in the paper were obtained through physical verification, regular observations, constant monitoring, documentation and records of oral history and administration of questionnaire in some selected settlements in the region. The paper highlighted several direct environmental and associated problems that emanated from oil exploration and exploitation in the region. The problems identified among others include large-scale environmental pollution and degradation of agricultural land which serves as source of income for the people coupled with social unrest arising from unpaid claims of compensation and lack of concern for the people in the exploration area. The paper advocates for oil spill management plan, control and clearance of spills; giving concessions to indigenous oil companies during biding process by granting licenses to operate in the Niger-Delta region; adoption of long-term monitoring and surveillance mechanism; continuous provision of infrastructure for the host communities by prospecting oil companies; and development of national oil spill contingency plan among others with a view to guarantee sustainable development of the environment in the region.
A review of the threat of oil exploitation to mangrove ecosystem: Insights from Niger Delta, Nigeria

Mangroves supply various goods and provide invaluable ecological services to humanity. They serve as habitat to different species of fishes, provide a variety of plant products, improve water quality, provide fish and shellfish for local communities, ensure coastal stabilization, provide food chain support for near-shore fisheries, and undertake carbon sequestration. They also serve as source of fuel, medicinal ornaments, and honey for the local population. Despite these socioeconomic and environmental benefits of mangroves, its depletion is a continuous practice in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. This is caused primarily by anthropogenic activities, including over exploitation, oil spills, and crude oil exploratory activities. These activities have destroyed livelihood structures, affected global warming control measures, and affected the coastal system stabilization of the Niger Delta region. This paper reviews existing literature and analysed identified gaps. The review indicated a lack of participatory framework for mangrove conservation in coastal communities in the Niger Delta despite the desperate need given the level of mangrove degradation in the region. In addition, mangrove conservation policies exclude community participation and negates co-management frameworks for mangrove conservation and protection in the region. This paper reviews the impacts of land contamination on mangrove ecosystems and socioeconomic activities of local communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. A framework for mangrove conservation in the coastal communities is also proposed, with emphasis on the need to develop the capacity of a critical mass of locals and provide low-to medium-level manpower in mangrove restoration in the Niger Delta region.

Activities such as farming, fishing and hunting have drastically reduced in the region which in the past was the major sources of income and livelihood of the local population. With the increasing soil infertility, health hazard and underdevelopment of the region, the inhabitants of the host communities have been forced to abandon their land and seek for nonexistent alternative means of livelihood. The population of the study consisted of residents in the six oil producing communities in Akwa Ibom State. Data for the study was collected through secondary sources. The result of the data analysis indicated a significant relationship between oil exploration and environmental degradation in Akwa Ibom State. On the basis of this, the following conclusion were drawn: that oil exploration activities in Akwa Ibom State has affected the people and their agricultural production as the people are no longer engaged in their normal farming activities due to soil infertility caused by frequent oil spillage and gas flaring in the region; oil exploration and production affected the people health status and their live span as they directly inhale the poisonous chemicals released into the environment by oil companies through gas flaring and oil spillages; that most environmental laws initiated by the past and present Government has not achieved its set goals and objectives of protecting the Niger Delta environment from pollution and degradation due to corruption, lack of political will and political intrigues due to the fact that most political elite in the country have a stake in the oil industry. Based on the findings of the study and the conclusions drawn, it was recommended among other things that: oil companies operating in the region should step up monitoring, repair and replacement of pipeline through both human and machine aided system, strict modification and implementation in the current regulatory framework of oil spillage and gas flaring, and a holistic approach to the environment in terms of planning, development and management of land resources.
ABSTRACT: This study investigated the causative factors, variables and effects of oil spill in Remote Creeks of the Kalabari region in Rivers state of Nigeria and to identify the suitable management systems that will control Oil Spill so as to reduce it impacts in the remote creeks. The study adopts a qualitative and quantitative research through interviews, fishermen and the youths to identify oil spill impacts on community socio- economic conditions. The collection of data involves the use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches concurrently. This was possible because the study focused on the effects of oil spill on aquatic lives and property. Questionnaires were distributed in nine communities affected by the oil spill in the narrow creek region of Kalabari area of Rivers State. The primary data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 25) Descriptive statistical tools such as frequency tables, percentages and bar chart were used to present the data. The study concluded that there are high effects of oil spill on aquatic lives and chattels, on the entire communities with different factors that have been responsible for oil spills. The research makes a recommendation to all stakeholders, youths involved in illegal bunkering, Federal Government and State Government within oil related and the oil companies situated to improve their strategies and or contingent planning in tackling oil spill-related issues and adhere to community‟s plight when appropriate. This study investigated the impact of oil exploitation on wetland and livelihood sustainability in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The objectives were to: carry out an expository study of the first oil well at Oloibiri; examine the vegetation and soil of the wetland; carry out an expository study of Kolo Creek as well as assessing the socioeconomic and environmental impact of sand mining. Data were collected by Participatory Research Approaches which include focus group discussion, interview and field observation to elicit qualitative information on the issues involved in the wetland and livelihood sustainability. The result showed that the original mangrove forest have been replaced with secondary forest while the coastal ecosystems that was once a habitat for a diversity of flora and fauna have been lost. Kolo Creek which provided for navigation, fishing and cultural activities of the local people was taken over by water hyacinth invasion leading to the loss of fishes and other aquatic population and consequently, livelihood. The paper therefore, 2 suggest the need for collaboration of all the stakeholders especially the oil companies operating in the area to ensure remediation and reclamation of the degraded wetland. All activities that degrade the wetland must be discouraged while encouraging those that promote sustainable use of resources.
Downstream Sediments Analysis of Dredged Site along Onuebum Agura Axis of Ekole Creek, Nigeria

ABSTRACT: Water is vital for the survival of living organisms, but the water sediments reduce the availability of the fresh water for use, hence the need to manage it through dredging. This study analysed the sediments of Downstream of the dredged Ekole creek, where sediment samples were collected from the; Upstream, Dredge point I, Dredge point II and Downstream. The pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Nitrate, Fe, Pb, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn and Cu were analysed from the sample using standard methods. It was observed that the Downstream pH increased to 7.79 from 7.17 pH of the Upstream, though it is reduced at Dredge point I (6.37) and latter increased to 6.57 at Dredge point II; similar trend was noticed for EC concentration; 37μS value of Downstream is higher than 33μS Upstream that is increased to 160μS Dredge point I, but dropped at Dredge point II to 31μS however, the Nitrate concentration at the Upstream was 0.0018 mg/kg, raised at Dredge point I to 0.065 mg/kg then dropped at Dredge point II and the Downstream to 0.0562 mg/kg and 0.0174 mg/kg respectively. Low concentration of heavy metals were found in the Dredge points of the sediment samples while high levels were found at the Upstream and Downstream points. Sediments at Downstream are more alkaline with higher EC, low nitrate but, more iron. It can be inferred that, the dredging activities increases the pH and heavy metals of the sediment in the water, at the Downstream. Hence water at the Downstream is less toxic and can be used.
