Modern science and medicine are now rediscovering the healing powers of music. It’s a yoga system through the medium of sonorous sounds. Depending on its nature, a raga could induce or intensify joy or sorrow, violence or peace, and it is this quality which forms the basis for musical application. Music therapy carries a great vintage in the ancient holistic medical science of India. The whole subject of music medical therapy is now getting attention from across the world. In India, the stream still grabs a backseat and needs to be empowered with certain advertising tools. In this paper, author has endeavored to bring the real scenarios of Indian culture and human temperament; present place of music therapy in India and suggested the steps to promote it in the Indian masses.

This paper is based on an assignment conducted for a graduate music therapy course which included interviews with Prof. Dr. Sumathy Sundar and Aastha Luthra, both music therapists currently practicing in India. It is a compilation of personal communications and writings from Prof. Dr. Sundar and Luthra, with some additional background from Dr. Sangeeta Swamy, on the history, current role, and future of music therapy in India. It acknowledges the effects of colonization; outlines current music therapy educational practices, theoretical orientations, methods, instruments, populations, and settings; honors the cultural diversity of this complex country; and highlights the personal role that music can also play for music therapists. In addition, this paper seeks to increase the dialogue regarding both the challenges and sources of hope in building the future of music therapy in India.

The aim of this paper is to introduce and discuss about how music therapy clinical practice and research initiatives in India serve as a bridge between the experiences of traditional music healing practices and scientific validations. The current status of these healing applications in the global framework of music therapy is highlighted. The multimodal approach by which aspiring music therapists engage in clinical practice and research with an individualized approach to bring about the therapeutic outcome are presented. Traditional healing resources like Vedic chanting, raga cikitsa, garbhasanskara (Learning in the Womb) time theory of ragas integrating the ancient Ayurvedic perspectives, ancient raga visual imagery and cakra activation (music and breathing technique using ragas) are enumerated. The clinical outcomes are reviewed as a way to impact biological, physiological, psychological, chrono-biological and spiritual dimensions.

Music plays a vital role in each and every human being’s life. It’s undeniable that music affects human emotions whether it's sadness, happiness, anger, stress, or depression. Ancient Indian classical music originated 2000 years ago. It’s based on seven basic notes that were derived from sounds of birds and animals. The permutations and combinations of these notes create melodious structures with musical motifs called “Raga”. These Ragas create different types of emotions in mind that in turn make positive effects on the body. Different Ragas are sung (vocally) or played (instrumentally) in particular time of the day during the entire 24 hours for its immense positive impact on mind and body. Hence it is used in a form of therapy known as “Music therapy” to be used therapeutically to treat multiple diseases. The types of Ragas, time of different Raga and its effects on the human body therapeutically is shown in tabular form in this paper.

This paper presents a brief review of various effects of Indian Raga music on the human body parameters. Music is a best medicine to maintain the health along with medicines. This study analyses how music helps to control the BP, sugar. Impact of music can be observed through ECG, EEG. This effect depends on individual’s perception. Music therapy gives better results for interested people. Some ragas are also effective for IRM ignorant people, which depend on its properties .These properties can be studied through time, spectral, cepstral domain analysis.

Before some decades, ancient Indian classical musical maestros affirmed that, ragas influences emotions of human being by changing the resonance of human body.Some ragas like darbari kanada, khamaj and pooriya are found to help in defusing mental tension, particularly in the case of hysterics. Since time immemorial music has been an integral part of human\'s life. While music is well apprehended as a source of entertainment and spirituality, but the Indian people had confide in music for its healing power too. In Vedic times music was used for chanting and intoning Vedic mantras not only in praise of God but also to relieved of several disharmonies in the individuals. Since then it is believed that music helps to enhances memory, boosts energy, and creates liveliness in human\'s life. Music is a kind of yoga system through the medium of sonorous sound, which acts upon the human organism and awakens and develops their proper functions to extent of self-realization. This is the ultimate goal of Hindu Philosophy and religion. Melody is the keynote of Indian Music. The 'Raga' is the basis of melody. Various 'Ragas', have been found to be very effective in curing many diseases. As music has a sedative effect, it can replace the administration of tranquillizers, or can reduce the dosage. Music increases the metabolic activities within the human body. It accelerates the respiration, influence the internal secretion, improves the muscular activities and as such affects the central nervous system and circulatory system of the listener and the performer. They stimulate the brain, ease tension and remove fatigue. The effect of Music Therapy may be immediate or slow, depending upon number of factors like the subject, his mental condition, environment and the type of Music, selected for having the desired effect. Music Therapy largely depends on individual needs and taste.
