Iranian Efl Teachers' Attitudes toward Communicative Language Teaching
2016
IntroductionMany researchers believes that the history of formal teaching of English in Iran dates back to 1938-1939 (See for example Foroozandeh 2010). In first English textbook series designed and published by the ministry of culture in academic year of 1938-1939 included six books for six grades of high school education. The Iranian committee of writers of this series and a group of English speaking educators who launched and implemented this joint project under the sponsorship of the ministry of culture had adopted the Direct Method (DM) and Reading Method (RM) and the series course books were not designed based upon any official curriculum. Foroozandeh (2010:68) evaluates that "the 6-book series did not follow the same design and procedure in all the lessons. The 1939 series was not accompanied by any work book or teachers manual, but the "foreword to teachers" provided comprehensive guidelines on classroom managements, student-teacher relationship, the importanc...
The Iranian EFL Students’ and Teachers’ Perception of Using Persian in General English Classes
International Journal of Applied Linguistics & English Literature, 2013
This paper examined the perception of Iranian EFL learners and teachers towards employing Persian in EFL classes. The present study was a case study which investigated teachers' and students' perception toward effective use of L1 and L2 in General English classes at university level. The participants were 345students and 25 teachers at the University of Guilan, Rasht, Iran. Two research tools were used for gathering data: questionnaires and interviews. Analysis of the qualitative study and comparing the mean scores of two groups via Mann-whitny revealed that the perceptions of the teachers and the students differ from each other. Iranian EFL learners were willing to use their mother tongue. While, Iranian EFL teachers had a positive tendency to use more English than Persian in the General English classes. Teachers have to consider that the major medium of instruction must be English. They should use L1 judiciously in FL classrooms whenever possible and beneficial to relieve anxious, nervous, frightened, and reluctant students as well as learners with low self-esteem.
Foreign Language Teaching in Iran: A Model for Effective EFL Teaching in the Iranian Context
Theory and Practice in Language Studies, 2015
Language teachers play a crucial role in language education. An effective EFL teacher in most cases paves the way for having an effective education. EFL teaching in different contexts bears some differences. The present study discusses the criteria that an effective EFL teacher should present in Iran. Interviews are conducted and 15 participants are interviewed and as a result of the interview, a questionnaire is developed. 90 EFL teachers and students answer to the questionnaire. The participants are male and female, experienced and novice, and of different ages. Multiple regression analysis reveals no relationship between age, gender, experience, and the answers they provide for the questionnaire. Due to factor analysis, 13 components including linguistic and non-linguistic factors are extracted and the results show that the majority of the participants agree with the criteria posed in the questionnaire. The participants' age, gender, and experience in EFL teaching do not reveal any distinguishing results among them. Consequently, a model is developed to present the criteria for being an Effective EFL teacher in Iran.

Journal of Applied Linguistics and Language Research, 2016
The current study made a comparison between Iranian EFL students at two different levels (freshman vs. junior) with respect to their attitudes towards foreign culture. One hundred EFL learners were selected based on availability sampling and were divided into two groups according to their level (freshman vs. junior). All the participants were asked to complete the attitude questionnaire. The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U Test was run to test for possible differences between the two independent groups on their attitudes towards foreign culture. The results revealed insignificant difference between the freshmen group and the junior group. Thus, the null hypothesis was confirmed implying that there was not any significant difference between Iranian freshman and junior English major students’ attitudes toward foreign culture.

Theory and Practice in Language Studies, 2013
The cultural influence of foreign languages has always been a matter of concern for the learners of languages. The present study aimed at examining the relationship between English Textbooks and the cultural attitudes of Iranian EFL learners at English language schools. To this end, two of the widely used series of English textbooks in Iranian context (Interchange and American File) were analyzed to extract all the possible cultural issues embedded within the units. A researcher made questionnaire was designed based on the cultural issues extracted from the English textbooks. It was validated by two experts in the field, also its reliability, using the data from pilot study through Cronbach's Alpha, was estimated to be (.870). The questionnaire was administered to 210 learners of English followed by an interview for follow up purposes. For measuring the probable correlation between the English textbooks and the cultural attitudes of the learners, Correlation as well as cross tabulation were run through SPSS for analysis of the obtained data. The results exhibited a significant correlation between English textbooks and the cultural attitudes of Iranian EFL learners. Moreover, the relationship found to be positive i.e. their attitudes significantly changed after studying these English textbooks.

The results of the independent samples T-test indicated that there was not any significant difference among learners' attitudes in different proficiency levels with regard to bilingual education. However, it was found that EFL learners of language institute had more positive attitudes towards bilingual education than their counterparts at university. Assessing EFL learners' beliefs about language learning: A survey in an Iranian local context
Following cognitive views towards language pedagogy, this preliminary report illustrates the beliefs of a community of non-English-major university students (N=139) about learning English as-a-foreign-language (EFL) in a dominantly bilingual Kurdish-Persian academic context in Ilam, in western Iran. To recognize the beliefs, BALLI (Horwitz, 1988) as a popular survey instrument was slightly modified and administered to the participants. Adopting a descriptive approach, the findings were generally classified and discussed in terms of five components: (a) language aptitude; (b) language learning difficulty; (c) nature of language learning; (d) learning and communication strategies; and, (e) motivation and expectations. The results also revealed these ethnic learners have a broad but consistent range of conceptions about EFL similar to and different from studies reported in the current literature. Finally, as a pedagogical implication, it was suggested that EFL teachers should consider the susceptibility of learners' beliefs to change during time and develop useful strategies to relieve clashing beliefs among language learners.
