The Journey to social entrepreneurship: profile analysis of social enterprises in Morocco

CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research - Zenodo, 2022

Social entrepreneurship is a topic of much debate in the academic environment. Much recent research has highlighted the supporting role of social entrepreneurs in solving social problems that public sectors and business environments have demonstrated their incapacity to solve. However, the identification of the social enterprise's characteristics in emerging countries has not yet been thoroughly examined. This article focuses on social enterprises; its aim is to identify the profile of social enterprises in the Moroccan context. Beyond the motivations and passions that drive social entrepreneurs in their quest to create value, we highlight the different characteristics of social enterprises in a developing country. The research question is: What are the characteristics of Moroccan social enterprises? In order to answer the study's main objective and research question, an approach based on an exploratory quantitative study was adopted with 37 Moroccan social entrepreneurs. This article revealed specific challenges faced by Moroccan social enterprises which aim to achieve economic and social performance. The results made it possible to discuss two essential points: the need to create a legal status for social enterprises and the nature of the process mobilized in the creation of social enterprises. Considering the limitations and future research directions, this article opens the way to clarify a growing ambiguity of the Moroccan social enterprise, but it does not represent in any way a complete and definitive identification of the Moroccan social enterprise's profile. Rather, it represents a first step towards more profound and effective research on social enterprises in Morocco.

Social Entrepreneurship: Focus on the Middle East

Social problems of income inequality, environmental degradation, inadequate healthcare and poor nutrition are increasing day by day, threatening the exclusion of the most vulnerable from the society. This paper focused on the emergence of social entrepreneurship as the means to solve these problems. A social entrepreneur applies business expertise and skills in the non-profit sector. The combination of income-generating activities with the creation of social benefit ensures that the solution remains sustainable and has more impact than the activities of the public sector or a traditional NGO. Despite being an innovative method to bring about social benefits, the progress of social entrepreneurship has been slow. Therefore, this study mainly identifies the various challenges being faced by social entrepreneurs. On the other hand, the ecosystem required for social businesses to flourish has been discussed and a 3-Tier scalability model has been proposed based on the seminal research carried out by Zahra et al (2009). Lastly, this paper has highlighted the opportunities and challenges of social entrepreneurship present in the Middle East region, particularly in the United Arab Emirates.

International journal of science and research, 2023

The study of motivation to create a social enterprise is an ongoing concern in social entrepreneurship. The purpose of this study is to better understand the motivations for creating social enterprises using a push and pull motivation framework. The empirical data for the study was collected by conducting twenty semistructured individual interviews via the google meet service or by telephone. We applied the qualitative method, so the empirical results of our research allowed us to develop a new global framework of motivation in which we provided three phases to better illustrate the relationship and role of motivations to engage in social entrepreneurship namely "pre-startup" phase, "during startup" phase, and The final phase, "post-startup"

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA

The field of social enterprises in the West Asia and North Africa region is burgeoning. Socially conscience, active and spirited entrepreneurs are finding new and innovative ways to break into the social sphere and change the rules of the game across different sectors. Unsurprisingly, this development is also accompanied by the trials and prospects particular to operating within and across geographies. Many of the challenges social entrepreneurs face are similar to those encountered by strictly commercial entrepreneurs: market structures are anything but transparent and the ease of doing business is hampered by bureaucratic intransigence surrounding registration, licensing, starting a business and enforcing contracts. However, social entrepreneurs face a whole set of additional challenges, conditions and opportunities, which are unique to enterprises looking to make a positive social change in the region. The study finds that the development of social enterprises across countries in West Asia and North Africa is being hindered by a lack of serious policy reform, investor disinterest, as well as limited access to social entrepreneurship ecosystems for lower-income and rural populations.

The theoretical framework for the analysis and interpretation of the results is determined by new institutional economics and entrepreneurship theories. The analysis allows for the of the leading research hypothesis which assumes that one of the most essential and basic elements of the social entrepreneurship ecosystem is knowledge, and its low level within society is a barrier to its development. To make the most of its potential, and increase employment in social enterprises, it is essential...
