How Do Domestic and Foreign Tourists Understand the Concept of 'Green Hotels' and its Practices in India

Journal of Survey in Fisheries Science, 2023

The term "Green Hotel" is still not very widely known among local, tourist, and even tourism industry professionals, as well as among many individuals who are unaware of its meaning and use. In India, the government and the private sector continue to place a high priority on green hotels because of their contribution to environmental preservation and a reduction in the effects of global warming. The implementation of the green hotel idea still raises both advantages and disadvantages due to certain onerous criteria for business actors. The majority of them believe that staying at a green hotel is expensive and uncomfortable for tourists. In spite of the fact that many tourists require green hotels, not all tourists are aware of this concept, particularly in India. This paper looks at studies on green hotels that have been carried out in other nations and relates with India. The case of India's Delhi shows how tourists can not completely grasp the idea of green hotels.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: A KEY RESPONSIBILITY OF HOTEL INDUSTRY

Environmental sustainability is desirable because it is fundamental to the continuation of lives on earth. Human life depends on plant, animal and mineral resources for food, shelter and other environmental life support. Because we are reliant on these resources, it is essential to conserve them so that they are available for future generations. The main aim of environmental sustainability is to protect human life; however, the practices of sustainability adopted will not be the same in all countries. This is explained by Goodland (1995) that every country has to balance the flow of input and output of its services. The variation lies in the balance that needs to be attained to achieve environmental sustainability. According to Goodland, environment sustainability is " maintenance of natural capital ". He further elaborated it as, " a set of constraints on the four major activities regulating the scale of the human economic subsystem: (1) the use of renewable (2) non-renewable resources on the production side (3) pollution (4) waste assimilation on consumption side ". The environmental sustainability is to maintain crucial resources through effective conservation activities in an era in which these resources are becoming increasingly scarce. The three aspects of environmental sustainability (economy, society and environment) are interdependent. Ekins (2000) defined environmental sustainability as the maintenance of important environmental functions. Harte (1995) added that environmental functions are referred to as the maintenance of natural capital. The continuous utilization of natural capital has led to depletion of non-renewable resources. Hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the global era. It is growing in an exceedingly sturdy manner and become one of the key drivers of development of any country in the world. In hospitality sector the tourism and hotel industry is growing globally at an awfully quick pace that creates wide opportunities for employment and economic growth. It alone is a multi-billion dollar enterprise and it is experiencing the rare growth trend. The Indian tourism and hotel industry is getting approval because of constant transportation, improving standards and functional growth. The success story of " Indian Hotel Industry " is barely second to china in Asia Pacific. According to WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) India ranks eighteenth in the world in tourism business and it will reach to top five very soon. The hospitality industry is gradually becoming one of the great examples of running a sustainable business that will be crucial for long-term success. Sustainability is increasingly becoming one of the most relevant issues to hoteliers in the 21st century as costs continue to rise, demand becomes increasingly sensitive and the pressure on being economically, socially and environmentally in a responsible manner grows. Sustainable development has thus become a priority and a challenge of our time. Due to the growing environmental degradation, society needs to become increasingly aware of the need of adopting and enforcing more effective measures of environmental protection. A number of studies indicate that the hotel industry has an important responsibility in this process. Courtland (2010) examined that on, demands of society and environmentally conscious stakeholders several large hotel companies have disclosed their environmental policies or mission statements on their company web sites. The web sites of some of the environmentally proactive hotel firms also include useful information about embedding environmental practices in their operations. Such information could be a useful resource for hotels that would like to move toward environmental sustainability. Kirk (1996) stated that the environmental sustainable hotel management includes operational issues such as environmental impacts, sustainability, resource and waste management, control, emission and pollution. He also pointed out that many hotels and restaurants which are located in areas of natural beauty and historic significance, have a delicate eco-balance. It is not only the location of the hotel that affects the environment but also the amount of luxury and comfort provided by hotels to the customers to attract them to the destinations. More luxury and comfort can be associated with greater consumption of water, power and other resources. Cooper (1998) defined environmental management in hotel as " The processes and practices introduced by the organization for reducing eliminating and ideally preventing negative environmental impacts arising from its undertaking. " In relation to environmental management an EMS (Environment Management System) was established as a management tool to effectively deal with environmental issues arising from various operations in the organization.
