Global Burden of Disease and Future Trends - Astrid Stuckelberger (original) (raw)

Abstract

In order to effectively improve health systems and ensure they are aligned to their population’s health needs, data is crucial in ensuring we correctly understand the health challenges we face, particularly in light of the impact of ageing on global health. Reflecting the work of more than 1,000 researchers and capturing data on more than 300 diseases and injuries in 188 countries, by age and sex, the Global Burden of Disease(GBD) is an example of how far collaborative efforts to collect and analyse big data have come. Key presentations from global experts in the field of ageing and health systems set the scene by identifying trends and emerging issues. This will be followed by a presentation from the Vision Loss Expert Group on the latest top-line data on the numbers, prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment globally and their estimates for the future.
