[English] - para português veja abaixo This PhD dissertation explores lusophone soundscapes in Lisbon in synchronic and diachronic perspectives. It focuses on the governance of a music festival in the capital of Portugal: Musidanças, organized by the Portuguese-Angolan musician Firmino Pascoal since 2001. It relates cultural agents that have evoked the ambivalent notion of lusofonia. Drawing from in loco and virtual fieldwork, I analyze musical webs of interest into play in contexts of lusophone fluidity, and seek to understand how local music producers and their products represent lusofonia in festive events, other venues and recordings. I point out ways in which Firmino Pascoal has voiced national provenances of musicians and music categories performed. Although existing studies mention historical references of intercultural mixture, only recently related taboos are approached. This Ethnomusicology study case of Musidanças, implying strategies of Discourse Analysis unveils relations between music and social change, thinks beyond narratives of origins and focuses on representations of intercultural awareness and intervention. --- [português] - for English please see above Esta dissertação explora paisagens sonoras lusófonas em Lisboa em perspetivas sincrónica e diacrónica. Centra-se na governância de um festival de música na capital de Portugal: Musidanças, organizado pelo músico Português-angolano Firmino Pascoal desde 2001. Relaciona agentes culturais que têm evocado a noção ambivalente da lusofonia. Baseando-me em trabalho de campo in loco e virtual, analiso teias musicais de interesses em jogo em contextos de fluidez lusófona, e procuro perceber como é que produtores de música locais e seus produtos têm representado lusofonia em eventos festivos, outros locais e gravações. Aponto modos pelos quais Firmino Pascoal verbaliza proveniências nacionais dos músicos e categorias musicais performadas. Apesar de estudos existentes mencionarem referências históricas de mistura intercultural, só recentemente se abordam tabus. Este estudo etnomusicológico do caso Musidanças, implicando estratégias de Análise de Discurso, revela relações entre música e mudança social, pensa além das narrativas de origens e foca representações de sensibilização e intervenção intercultural.

2010 The (r)evolution of lusophone musics in the city of Lisbon

This dissertation explores the concept of lusofonia. Departing from a discursive analysis of the concept, I address the ways through which it figures in the cultural policies of the Municipality of Lisbon and of governmental institutions, and how it informs their actions. I also explore the role of voluntary associations such as Sons da Lusofonia that evoke lusofonia as part of their goals. I then analyze how the concept of lusofonia and the action of governmental institutions and voluntary associations inform the creative work and identities of selected Portuguese-speaking migrant musicians from the PALOP (African Portuguese-speaking countries), Brazil and East Timor.

Approaching music as a point of social connection in the post-colonial city of Lisbon, where cultural entrepreneurs deploy the political concept of lusofonia, this study examines the ways in which local migrant musicians from Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), as well as Brazil and East Timor, position themselves in this context. In general, the study shows that there is a lack of recognition of the contribution they make to the expressive culture of the Portuguese capital, and this is related to national preconceptions. Surprisingly, despite several existing counter-discourses regarding lusofonia, all interviewed musicians do see some future relevance in this concept. They appeal to both supranational institutions and national governments, asking for structural support in order to promote and disseminate all the expressive culture of Portuguesespeaking African countries, indicating that the contribution of migrant musicians from these countries should be considered as an integral part of Portugal's cultural expression and heritage.

Musical Performance at a Brazilian Festival

Este trabalho discute a diversidade musical nos gêneros musicias utilizados durante a Festa do Divino em São Luis do Paraitinga. Seguindo o modelo de análise feita por Blacking na sua exposição dos gêneros musicias dos Venda, mostra-se como as formas musicias em São Luis estão associados a setores distintos da população, sendo que, na festa, o legado musical como um todo emerge, ainda que claramente demarcando cada categoria social, indicando suas posições relativas na hieraquia local.

O musicar local e a produção musical da localidade

Vivemos hoje em ambientes sonoros onde estamos expostos a uma grande variedade de estilos musicais de diversas épocas. A etnomusicologia, contudo, tem se concentrado no estudo de gêneros e práticas musicais tidas como “tradicionais” ou “próprias” ao contexto do estudo ou grupo étnico da pesquisa. Uma parcela das atividades musicais que fazem parte do dia a dia de muitas pessoas – seus “musicares locais” – podem ser ignoradas. Ao se integrarem à vida cotidiana, os musicares se tornam espaços que promovem sentimentos de pertencimento e de compromisso para com os contextos em que foram vividos e para com aqueles com quem foram compartilhados. Este artigo explora perspectivas voltadas para a relação entre estas atividades e as localidades em que ocorrem, investigando como os musicares afetam essas localidades e como são afetadas por elas. O musicar local cumpre um papel primordial na “produção de localidades” (Appadurai), evidenciando seu caráter eminentemente político.

This textbook offers a refreshing vision of music from the Iberian Peninsula, delving into its complex diversity by addressing the multiplicity of regional genres, going beyond the well-known genres of fado and flamenco. The shift in perspective is immediately perceptible from the front cover illustration, a photo of bagpipers and drummers accompanied by a female gigante (giant) in medieval dress during a patron saint celebration in Cantabria. Throughout the first three chapters, the authors provide a broad overview of Spanish and Portuguese music that gives the reader a kaleidoscopic understanding of the rich and diverse musical genres existing across the two countries, contextualised through a range of historical, social and cultural backgrounds. The last two chapters do, however, concentrate on fado and flamenco, thus addressing the main themes that might interest a lecturer introducing their students to Iberian music.
