The study investigates the effects of on-line newspaper readership on the newspaper purchase among audience in Nigeria. The study is guided by Technological Determinism Theory, and Use and Gratification Theory. The methodology used for carrying out the study is survey design. Two sets of questionnaire are administered; one on the reading public and the other on the management of selected newspapers. The research results reveal that sales of surveyed newspaper companies reduced drastically over the period of study, and that respondents are more interested in reading newspapers on-line than off-line. The study recommends that newspaper industry should jointly come up with a standardized subscription fee for access to their on-line editions. It also recommends that contents of newspaper hard copies should be improved to enhance timeliness and immediacy, so as to pace up with on-line news trends.
Content Preference among Online and Hardcopy Newspaper Readers in Imo State

The emergence of newspapers online has created an ambivalence globally. Whereas the general feeling is that the online version of newspapers are a threat to the print's business model, it is difficult to tell between online version and hardcopy newspapers which one is more economically rewarding as both are readily available and appear to thrive at least in Nigeria. This study is a survey of 392 newspaper readers in Imo State, selected in accordance with the Taro Yamane formula. Findings show that 80% of the respondents read both versions of newspapers, and that content is immaterial as a determinant of preferred version (76%). Rather, availability accounts for the version attended to per time. In addition, certain demographic and psychographic factors influence choice of content as well as media. It is therefore recommended among other things that the newspaper industry strive to provide both online and print versions provided that appropriate emphasis is laid on news which respondents consider the most valuable of newspaper contents.

Readers' Preferences for Print and Online Newspapers in Northwestern Nigeria

Print newspaper circulation declines as the online versions are available for free. This study determines the extent of readership preferences for both print and online newspapers in northwestern Nigeria. Daily Trust, being the largest circulating newspaper in the study area was selected for case study. The study employed quantitative approach, in which descriptive survey method was used to gather and analyze data from print and newspaper readers in the study area. Structured questionnaire was used as data-gathering instrument. The questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 330 newspaper readers using simple random sampling. The findings revealed a moderate (Mean=3.38) readers’ preference for the online version of the newspaper to its print counterpart. Further analysis of the findings revealed that majority of the readers (Mean=3.49) find themselves reading less print copy of the newspaper because they have access to the free online versions. Majority of the readers (mean=3.37) will continue to read the print version despite the availability of its free online counterpart. Also, majority of the readers (Mean=3.08) spend less time reading the print copy of the newspaper due to the availability of its online versions. Meanwhile, majority of the readers (Mean=3.51) are confident that the newspaper will continue to survive despite the availability of its free online versions.
A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF READERSHIP OF PRINT AND ONLINE NEWSPAPERS IN JOS, NIGERIA
ABSTRACT Scholars and students of Mass Communication have always had the feeling that the advent of the Online Newspapers would undermine the readership population of the traditional Print Newspapers. Therefore, this study has comparatively analysed the readership pattern of both the print and online newspapers among Nigerians, with concentration on newspaper readers in Jos, the Plateau State capital, who were both males and females within the age bracket of 18years and above, cutting across Civil Servants, Media Professionals, Lecturers of Mass Communication, Students of Mass Communication and Public Relations Practitioners. Two hundred (200) copies of questionnaire were administered among these groups in the University of Jos, NTA Television College, Jos, Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin-Ladi, Jos Campus and civil servants in Jos where only 159 were returned. The research was based on the Uses and Gratification Theory, propounded by Katz in 1974. This means that media consumers use a particular media product based on the benefit they could derive therein. The study found out that in spite of the threat posed by Online Newspapers to Print Newspapers, people still read the print editions. The study discovered that even though a good number of people read more of Online Newspapers, others in almost the same number also read the Print Newspapers. It also found out that the print newspaper would not go into extinction because of the threat posed by the Online Newspapers, by way of readership and revenue profile. The study is concerned more with readership pattern of both the Print Newspapers and Online Newspapers. Therefore, this study recommends that Print Newspaper publishers should exploit brands by promoting their online and print products as well as share editorial staff and other resources among these two products. Apart from this, they need to invest in a relationship with their readers and advertisers. They also need to introduce new products and business models to attract both readers and advertisers.

There is speculation that the exposure of the contents of online newspapers satisfies readers' need for information and slows down the drive for the print versions. This study aims to examine readers' motivations towards reading online newspapers. Many studies conducted revealed that online newspapers give certain values to the readers which their print counterpart do not, but there is still a gap on determining what really motivates the readers to read the online versions. The study employed descriptive survey method in which questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample of 330 newspapers readers. The findings demonstrated a high (Mean=3.77) overall motivation level of the readers towards reading online version of newspapers. A further analysis of the findings revealed that readers (mean=3.81) are motivated to read online version of newspapers because they have access to the internet. Also readers (mean=3.62) are motivated to read online version of newspapers because of its interactive nature. Meanwhile, readers (Mean=3.93) are motivated to read online version of newspapers because of its ability to provide timely updates. The study concludes that online newspapers are gaining popularity in the newspaper industry. Therefore, newspaper publishers should strategize ways to fully embrace their technological fate and enhance quality print run.

A Study of Online Newspaper Reading Habits Among University Students in Nigeria

Online newspaper reading is gradually becoming a habit among Nigerian university students. This paper therefore sets out to discover the nature of this habit. It seeks to find out the students’ favourite online newspapers, how frequently the students read the papers as well as the problems they encounter while attempting to read the online papers. The methodology used in conducting the study is survey. The paper used random sampling technique to select 3600 students from the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. The analysed result showed that the Vanguard, Daily Trust, Punch, Daily Sun and The Nation are the top five favourite newspapers the students read online. The study also found 47.00% of the research respondents read the newspapers daily, while 13.76% do that four times a week; 12.23% read them thrice a week, while those who do so twice a week are 8.90%. Trends and Patterns of Online Newspapers in Nigeria: A Study of Sahara Reporters and Premium Times

The drift of readers, viewers and advertisers from newspapers and broadcast stations to online news publications is not only limited to the developed world but has also become a visible trend in the developing countries such as Nigeria. Since Professor Marsha MacLuah opined in 1987 that the world would become a hamlet of communication, online publication has truly made the world a global village by providing easy access to the media contents which the readers at their convenient times and places can read as the news breaks.
