REPRESENTAÇÃO E PEDAGOGIA NOS EMBATES POR UM PROJETO URBANÍSTICO: A REVITALIZAÇÃO DO CAIS MAUÁ DE PORTO ALEGRE (original) (raw)

The study aims to identify, describe and discuss the pedagogical dimension of the discourses and representations embedded in a proposal of urban intervention – the Project for Revitalization of the Mauá Pier of Porto Alegre -, having the website of the project (http://vivacaismaua.com.br) as object of study. In a search for connections between Architecture/Urbanism and Education, dialogues among authors from different fields are developed, under the light of central concepts of Cultural Studies in Education as representation and cultural pedagogies, articulated to others, such as city, cultural patrimony, architecture and urbanism. The construction of meanings in culture is studied, as well as its repercussion on cities and urbanism, where it’s recurrent the use of terms such as revitalization, regeneration, rehabilitation, etc, which are analyzed as a discursive strategy and a practice of signification. Likewise, the experimentations with certain urbanistic “recipes” and its applications while irrestrict models are explored in this study. Theorizing about cultural pedagogies made it possible to point out how nonscholarly instances, such as the media, educate by promoting the conduction of individuals towards certain interested modes of thinking about the city and its spaces. The website was chosen as an artifact of analysis because it hosts a series of texts, images and testimonies that constitute fertile material to highlight the many representations put into circulation and, thus, to show how this artifact "wishes" to conduce to certain visions about which is good and desirable for the city and its inhabitants. Due to its extension, there was a focus on those tabs and passages of the website in which the pedagogical trait of the strategies used to convince the visitor about the potential urbanistic and real estate qualities of the enterprise were noticed more clearly. It was also observed that the website seeks to counteract possible objections to the enterprise's objectives, emphasizing a supposed "public and accessible" character, promoting a non-commercial image of the Project, celebrating favorable testimonies, repeating certain information exhaustively, besides not opportunizing the discussion of other hypotheses or alternatives.
