A Dialogue about the Nature and Unification of Information Science and Information Philosophy

At the invitation of Kun Wu, Head of the International Center for the Philosophy of Information at the Xi'An Jiaotong University, Pedro C. Marijuan paid a ten-day academic visit to the University 4-14 November 2016. During his visit, Marijuan presented three lectures to students and teachers and had two dialogues with Wu November 11th and 12th on the topic of "The Nature and Unification of Information Science and Information Philosophy". Under this main topic, several sub-topics were discussed, such as the origin and development of information science and technology, the concept of entity, the fundamental principles for building a unified information science, relevant bio-information studies, the epistemological media of information philosophy, the relationship between information flows and matter-energy flows, the statuses of computationalism and general information theory, the structure of unified information science and so on. This extended abstract succinctly displays some basic content of those dialogues.

The scope of the concept of information and the future of information science

The key concept of information science is the concept of information which is tied to a number of complications. The main problem is that there is no definition of this concept. The purpose of this article is an analysis of the concept of information from the position of classical logic. The main method of the article is a conceptual analysis. First, we briefly deal with the overview of the concepts of information, with concepts and their definition as such and with the scope of the concept of information. Then, we provide an analysis of 31 important definitions of the concept of information which were developed within the scope of information science and related fields, and we consider relations between the concept of information and the concepts in other disciplines. Abstract: The paper considers necessary conditions for establishing information science as a scientific autonomous disci-pline. The lack of a commonly accepted definition of information is not as threatening as it may seem, as each study within the discipline may choose an own definition, as well as an own philosophical framework, when there are some alternatives to choose between. More important is the development of a common methodology of inquiry and some range of standard questions regarding the concept of information. Also, it is important to develop some standards of inquiry, which would make information scientific studies accessible to philosophical analysis and reflection. In turn, contributions of information science to the resolution of problems identified within philosophy will give the best measure of maturity for information sci-ence as a discipline.

Toward a New Science of Information

Currently, a Science of Information does not exist. What we have is Information Science that grew out of Library and Documentation Science with the help of Computer Science. The basic understanding of information in Information Science is the Shannon type of "information" at which numerous criticisms have been levelled so far. The task of an as-yet-to-be-developed Science of Information would be to study the feasibility of, and to advance, approaches toward a more general Theory of Information and toward a common concept of information.
