‘Akko, the Old City, the Genoese Quarter. In: Hadashot Arkheologiyot: Excavations and Surveys in Israel 129, 2017. (original) (raw)
Abstract
The excavation was conducted within an Ottoman-period building known as ‘House Becky’ near ez-Zeituna Square in the central part of the old city of ‘Akko. A study of medieval written sources alongside previous surveys and excavations indicate that the modern building is situated within the boundaries of the Crusader-period Genoese quarter and in alignment with the quarter’s covered street. In its present plan, the building comprises a courtyard on the north and four chambers with groin vaults set in a cross-like plan along a general north–south axis. A previous excavation was conducted in the eastern half of the southern chamber. The current excavation was conducted in the western half of the eastern chamber, revealing architectural remains from two periods of occupation: the Crusader period (thirteenth century CE) and the Ottoman period (eighteenth–nineteenth century CE); two main construction phases were ascribed to the Crusader period (1, 2), and three construction phases were ascribed to the Ottoman period (1–3). The excavation was accompanied by an architectural survey by Shotten-Hallel, which focused on four elements within the building: the remains of an arched gate, a fortified wall, an arrow slit and a transverse arch.
