Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering, 2020
The major challenge for world's power sector is varying load, low energy efficiency, environmental issues, and low power quality. Microgrid, a smart grid key technology, offers a promising solution to these issues to some extent. By using the renewable energy sources, the generation efficiency can be increased up to 90% without any loss for transmission. This paper presents the performance analysis of a hybrid microgrid under islanded mode. Microgrid under consideration consists of an array of 33 parallel strings of 5 modules connected in series, and maximum power delivered with this combination is 50 KW at 1000 W/m 2 irradiance, and wind turbine of nominal output power of 50 KW at wind speed 12 m/s, a battery of 500 V, 40 Ah rating, an AC load of rating 150 KW, 50 KVAR and a DC load of 200 kW have been considered for the microgrid. Utility grid of three-phase, 25 kV, 50 Hz is connected via three-phase two-winding Star-Delta transformer of 100 kVA, 25 kV/260 V, 50 Hz. In this paper, decoupling PQ control method turns to voltage/frequency (V/f) control for islanded mode of operation. With distributed generation sources supplying loads, a proper load sharing is the objective without overloading the system. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller based on incremental conductance algorithm has been employed.

Utility Grid is connected on the other side of the converter. This work presents the simulation of the selected microgrid system with PV as renewable source, utility grid and loads in MATLAB/ Simulink under various condition in Grid-connected mode. Five 250W PV Panels are linked to the system at Point of Common Coupling (PCC). Critical and Non-Critical loads are added to verify the performance. It was observed that power demand was not met as per the requirement. To improve performance with regards to power sharing, Decoupled Vector Control method is implemented. Result reveals that Utility grid and PV panels deliver power to loads continuously without interruption.
Control of Microgrid – A Review on Recent Trends
– The ever increasing demand for energy and changes in climatic conditions that give rise to increased carbon gas in atmosphere in the past few decades have initiated the advancements in renewable energy technologies. However, integration of these distributed generations to the grid has made adverse impacts on the existing grid and its interconnected operation. A solution to this problem is Microgrid concept that will make the existing grid suitable for increased integration of renewable energy sources to it. Power quality issues and condition will decide whether the Microgrid is to be in grid connected mode or islanded mode. In either of the cases, control of Microgrid plays a vital role. Several researchers have presented various control strategies for Microgrid under different conditions. This paper presents a review all possible control techniques discussed in the literature for the Microgrid in both autonomous and grid interconnected operations.
Microgrid: modelling and control
Alotibe Mohammad Microgrid Modelling and Control Other Thesis Murdoch University, 2010
This thesis presents a complete model of a typical microgrid, together with identification of the required control strategies in order to operate this new type of power system. More specifically, it involves the modelling of PV systems, inverters, Phase Locked Loops (PLLs), loads and utility distribution networks, which can be then combined together to form a microgrid. The proposed microgrid control strategies in this thesis consider different operation conditions of a microgrid. For islanded operation, control techniques similar to those in conventional power systems are adopted and modified to regulate the microgrid operation. For grid-connected operation, constant current control and P-Q control schemes are used to control output powers of the sources within a microgrid. After examining the simulation results, it has been concluded that the designed microgrid model is adequate in its representation and it behaved in a way similar to real integrated power systems. Furthermore, proposed control strategies have proven their robustness and effectiveness in controlling the operation of microgrid while maintaining system stability. The contents of this thesis lay a groundwork that allows for further investigation and development in the areas of microgrid control and microgrid modelling. In this report detailed descriptions on the modelling of typical microgrid components are provided, followed by control techniques demonstrations, and then simulation results for discussion and investigation.
Smart interconnection of a PV/wind DG micro grid with the utility distribution network
2012
Future electric grids are becoming smarter by applying intelligent control techniques. Distributed Generation (DG) systems such as Photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy systems are essential parts of the future smart grids. In this paper, a smart interconnection control strategy is proposed for a grid connected PV/fixed speed wind driven micro grid. In case of industrial inductive loads, the generation of active power from the micro grid causes power factor decrease at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) with the main grid. With the additional reactive power needs of the squirrel cage induction generator of the windsystem, the micro grid itself becomes a VAR burden.

A Review on Primary and Secondary Controls of Inverter-interfaced Microgrid
Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, 2021
The demand of electricity and environmental issues associated with conventional power generation plants are increasing significantly. Modern technology has transformed the conventional power system through the integration of distributed generation (DG). With the help of modern power electronic technology, the conventional power system is able to support the integration of DGs based on renewable energy sources (RESs). The systematic combination of DGs with energy storage system forms a microgrid (MG), which can operate in islanded mode or grid-connected mode. The intermittent nature of RES and varying load pose substantial obstacles such as voltage and frequency instability, and the unreliability of RES. Unequal feeder impedances and non-linear loads are considered as present challenges in MG control. Hierarchical control has been useful in undertaking solutions to these issues. This paper covers the deep insight of different control methods applied at the primary and secondary control levels in hierarchical control. In primary control, the classification based on droop and nondroop controls is discussed. The virtual synchronization machine (VSM) based control method is reviewed. Voltage and frequency restoration control and economical operations at decentralized and centralized secondary control are analyzed in detail. Based on the existing literature, critical discussion on MG control and future trends are also presented to provide future research perspectives. Index Terms-Distributed generation (DG), hierarchical control, droop control, non-droop control, inverter.

This paper proposed Micro grid can operate in a grid-tied or autonomous mode. The coordination control algorithms are proposed for smooth power transfer between ac and dc links and for stable system operation under various generation and load conditions. This Micro grid system operates under normal conditions which include normal room temperature in the case of solar energy and normal wind speed at plain area in the case of wind energy. The Power Balancing Control simulation results are presented to illustrate the operating principle, feasibility and reliability of Micro grid proposed system. Increasing electrification of daily life causes growing electricity consumption, rising number of sensitive/critical loads demand for high-quality electricity, the energy efficiency of the grid is desired to be improved, and considerations on climate change are calling for sustainable energy applications. All these factors are driving the conventional electricity grid to the next generation of grid, i.e. smart grid, which is expected to appear and coexist with the existing grid, adding to its capacity, reliability, and functionalities. Consequently, the applications of distributed generation (DG) systems are emerging, and most will be interfaced to the grid through power-electronics converters. However, the grid will become much more complex due to the increasing number of DG systems. For instance, the traditional one way power flow is broken by the bidirectional power flow.
