THE DETERMINATION OF STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN PROVING GEOMETRICAL PROPOSITIONSUSING EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANALYSIS (original) (raw)

The importance of proof was elusive to many students, making them less appreciative in proof-writing activities which increased their difficulties in constructing valid proofs. This descriptive study aimed to determine factors that explain students' difficulties in proving geometrical propositions. Factor Analysis categorizes four factors-Foundations in Geometry, Interest and Attitude, Opportunity for Practice, and Reasoning Skill. These must be considered to reduce difficulty in constructing proofs in geometry. Review, classroom proving activity, enough time for group activity, and a constant integration of proving in a classroom discussion would be very helpful for students to enhance performance in writing proofs.
