This work analyzes the construction of other alterations involving Indians and Jesuits - to a lesser degree, other colonial agents - in the interethnic contacts in the Serra de Ibiapaba, captaincy of Ceará (Brazil), during the seventeenth century. For this, the reflection history was based on the expanded meaning of the Jesuit Missio and its unfolding in social practices, especially through its catechesis; and also in the peculiar process of reading, conceived and constructed by the native peoples from their understandings about this new historical contingency coming with the contacts. In this encounter of distinct cultural logics a mutual translation of how each side (or different sides) perceived and understood the Other was processed, especially from its cultural references, limitations of action in specific historical contacts and lived experiences.
